"Fine." He spoke the word aloud; his voice faintly echoed through the narrow tunnel. The simplicity of his response stunned Clara in an instant as her widened eyes stared at his figure in shock.

Deep lines slowly formed across her forehead as she desperately tried to determine whether the voice she had just heard truly belonged to the undead creature standing before her or if it was just an illusion projected by her battered mind.

Awakeners, depending upon their potential and the overall rank they had reached, possessed far greater regenerative abilities than ordinary humans.

Although such regeneration wasn’t instantaneous, it allowed most injuries that weren’t immediately fatal to recover over time gradually.

This was precisely why Clara wasn’t completely incapacitated despite the tremendous blow she had received earlier.

However, the words she had just heard weren’t what confused her the most.

It was the zombie’s eyes.

Previously, those jade-green eyes seemed void of all emotions and carried a complicated stillness of something that had already abandoned the concept of being human.

But now, there was an unmistakable sense of determination growing within those eyes.

It was a strange firmness, almost like a resolution. But then again, for a zombie to possess emotions — that was an absurd thought.

As undead, zombies were creatures who were stuck hanging between the realms of life and death. Their lives had already come to an end, and with their bodies shutting down, they often rotted till disintegration.

During this period, the brain as well as several important organs disintegrated rapidly, destroying the very foundations of what shaped a human being.

Memories, will, conscience, and emotions — all such things ceased to exist, turning the rotting human body into a husk of primitive nature.

The undead’s never-ending hunger for blood and flesh drove the infected body as the mindless being came to be known as a ’zombie.’

But seeing the glistening resolution in his eyes, Clara couldn’t help but question, ’How could a zombie possess such emotions?’

For the first time since encountering him, Clara began wondering whether something had gone wrong with her own mind.

However, even while confusion occupied her thoughts, the majority of her attention was fixed on Christine.

Because of her own recklessness, she had allowed Ethan to get closer to Christine than herself.

The unconscious leader of the Radiant Stars lay defenseless within a dangerous distance of the strange zombie.

Clara had already discovered that Ethan was slower than her, and that fact alone gave her a significant advantage.

But she still chose to remain vigilant since she couldn’t determine whether this strange undead possessed any additional abilities or not.

Against an unknown opponent, relying solely upon superior speed was equivalent to gambling with her own life.

Before she could make another decision, Ethan suddenly charged forward. His upper body leaned heavily toward the front, his posture resembling that of a wild boar preparing to ram into its prey.

His feet slammed against the rocky ground and pushed his body forward with tremendous force.

Clara’s eyes immediately narrowed as she hurriedly ignited her flames and shifted her body to the side.

She dodged the zombie’s incoming attack by a considerable distance, and just as she had expected, his speed was nowhere near enough to catch her.

However, Ethan didn’t appear surprised at all. His expression remained completely calm, almost as if he had been expecting such a result.

Unable to control his momentum, Ethan’s body continued moving forward. Seeing this, Clara immediately noticed a very obvious gap in the zombie’s abilities.

Ethan possessed tremendous physical power, but his movements lacked the refinement required to properly control such strength at high speeds.

Clara recognized this weakness at a glance and realized that she could exploit it very easily.

Her eyes shone brightly for a moment as she rushed forward confidently. Her fiery aura surged around her body as she closed the distance and pulled both of her arms backward.

Reaching a viable distance, she thrust them forward simultaneously as her palms struck Ethan’s back with strong force — a concentrated burst of yellow flames erupted between them.

The flames didn’t simply burn his skin but instead drilled directly into his body and tore through his flesh before reaching his organs and bones.

Then, it continued through his chest until the attack finally emerged from the other side.

Large amounts of his thick jade-green blood gushed out from the wounds, running down Ethan’s bare chest before dripping on the ground.

His body merely trembled for an instant before the familiar sensation of regeneration spread through his flesh, rapidly repairing the destroyed tissues and sealing the severe wounds easily.

And at that exact moment, the corners of Ethan’s lips slowly curled upward viciously.

Naturally, Clara was oblivious to such a change as she was standing behind his back.

She had no idea that the attack she believed had placed Ethan into another vulnerable position had instead created the exact opportunity he had been waiting for.

’System, put all available attribute points into Agility.’ The command resounded within his mind.

Almost immediately, the translucent cerulean screen appeared before his eyes and displayed the updated values.

└ ■ Agility - [35 + 5] (↑15)

[Unallocated Attribute Points:]

└ ■ 0

Ethan’s eyes flickered slightly upon seeing the result. For a brief moment, he actually felt fortunate.

Recently, the system had begun suffering from strange delays and unexpected moments of inactivity.

It often chose the worst possible moments to become unresponsive.

If that had happened now, his entire plan would have been ruined, forcing him to rely on his previous attributes and prolonging this battle far beyond what he wanted. Fortunately, it had responded.

The instant the additional attributes entered his body, his body became considerably lighter.

The sensation was subtle at first, but within the next moment, the difference became almost undeniable.

The heavy sluggishness that had previously plagued his movements disappeared and was replaced by a strange sensation of responsiveness that allowed his body to react far more naturally to his thoughts.

Clara had already begun preparing another attack when Ethan suddenly turned around, forcing her eyes to widen in shock.

In that split second, she realized that something had changed, though she had no opportunity to understand what.

Ethan’s right fist swung forward without any hesitation. There was no complicated skill behind the attack, nor was there any special technique that made the strike appear impressive. Ethan simply combined the tremendous strength he had accumulated with his newly increased agility and released everything into a single punch.

His fist struck Clara directly across the face as a deafening crack echoed through the tunnel.

Her jaw was violently thrown sideways, and the soft muscles around her face rippled from the impact while her entire body was launched along with the punch.

Her head struck the cavern wall with a sharp, loud noise.

Nearly half of her skull fractured beneath the impact as tiny cracks spread across the bone like a spiderweb, while her lower jaw was crushed and her neck snapped from the sudden force transmitted through her body.

Several fragments of rock were dislodged from the tunnel wall and embedded themselves into her body.

As she collapsed, blood slowly flowed out from her wounds and pooled near her body.

The flames surrounding her body disappeared, while the tunnel in itself became deathly silent.

Ethan slowly lowered his fist and straightened his posture, staring at Clara’s corpse without moving for several seconds.

This was the first time he had willingly taken another human’s life.

Despite having killed countless monsters since awakening, despite having watched his own subordinates tear apart creatures without hesitation, something about seeing the lifeless body of a human lying before him felt completely different.

A faint feeling of disgust rose within his heart. It wasn’t directed towards Clara but towards himself.

He had once been a human, and somewhere deep inside that undead body, that part of him still existed.

He didn’t want to kill humans; he didn’t want to become something that casually decided whether another person’s life was worth preserving.

Yet, standing within this dark underground colony, Ethan understood something that he could no longer ignore — his future wasn’t secure.

His subordinates were dying every second. Enemies whose strength he couldn’t even properly understand had already entered his territory.

In the moment, if he hesitated simply because his conscience screamed against taking another human life, then eventually, there would be nothing left for him to protect.

He slowly moved his hands behind him and placed them on his lower back. Bending backward, he stretched his body to relieve some of his stress and clear his own mind.

His expression remained calm, but his eyes carried a faint trace of sorrow.

Perhaps this was what survival truly meant — to not remain pure or kind, but to make the selfish decision to continue living when every other choice threatened to pull him into his grave.

He looked at Clara’s corpse once more before mustering his thoughts and looking deeper into the tunnel.
