"This place sure is luxurious..." Jackson commented while looking at all the flying drones zipping around. Most of them had the symbols of large corporations plated on their bodies. Other than that, he even spotted multiple awakened, armed to the teeth in fancy equipment.
Right now, he was in the center of Sector Sixty-Seven. This was the busiest business and most protected region of the entire sector. While it was difficult to spot such awakeners in suburbs like where his apartment used to be, spotting awakened here wasn’t all that hard.
In the distance, Jackson even spotted a handsome-looking man surrounded by flashing cameras and a small crowd. The handsome man had an easygoing smile on his face as he answered the crowd’s questions one by one.
"Rex, how does it feel joining the elite group of Silver Rank Hunters?"
Hearing the question, Jackson’s steps paused slightly. Hearing the mention of hunters, he immediately became interested.
Although he was sure of the methods used by the Hunter Organization to rank hunters, all hunters were divided into ranks:
Iron, Bronze, Silver, and Gold Rank Hunters. Above Gold was the legendary rank, but in the last ten years or so, not a single legendary-rank hunter had appeared in Sector Sixty-Seven.
So as such, Silver Rank Hunters were quite the big shots, commanding major positions in corporations, enjoying salaries of thousands of mana stones per month.
Thinking of thousands of mana stones per month as salary, Jackson could not help but feel excitement rising in his heart.
Other than simply slaying magical beasts for their mana cores, joining a big corporation was also another way of earning money.
It was at that time he heard the handsome Silver Rank Hunter mention the name of the corporation.
The young Silver Rank Hunter fixed his hair and flashed a large smile toward the cameras pointing in his direction and said:
"It was all thanks to the Green Soul Corporation for sponsoring me with all the resources."
"I advise all the new talents that are about to graduate from the academies to think about joining Green Soul Corporation in the future."
The surrounding crowd’s expressions fell. They were expecting the young hunter to turn the interview into an advertisement out of nowhere.
It was already July, and another batch of new awakened would be graduating out of the universities to join the real world.
Hearing those words, Jackson’s pace also quickened.
Right. He had less than one month left.
Completely ignoring everything else, he made his way toward one of the largest buildings. Situated at the heart of the sector was the Hunter Association building, standing tall like a pillar supporting humanity.
Looking at this scene, a flash of admiration appeared in Jackson’s heart.
It was all because of the Hunter Association’s efforts that people like them could afford to live in peace without worrying about mana beasts.
Once he was close to the Hunter Association, he spotted multiple groups of hunters, mostly in groups of three or four, moving in and out of the building while discussing among themselves.
Some looked eager to accept a new mission, while others had heavy expressions on their faces, seemingly suffering some sort of setback.
Looking around, Jackson even spotted several newbies like him who were gawking around.
Just like him, these people were also here to register at the Hunter Association.
Moving inside, Jackson followed the guiding signs to make his way to the registration counter, a spacious hall on the first floor.
When Jackson reached it, there were already hundreds of people waiting. Looking at the sheer number of people, Jackson’s expression fell.
At this rate it would take a couple of hours before his turn came...
"Damn... if this takes too long, I will leave..." Jackson muttered under his breath.
One must not forget that he was already out of money. If he didn’t go out to hunt today, the Green Soul Inn would kick his family out onto the streets.
Jackson’s worries were unfounded, as while he waited, the crowd quickly thinned. In a couple of minutes, it would be his turn to register.
Realizing this, Jackson’s nerves finally relaxed.
Exactly five minutes later, Jackson was called out by the Hunter Association staff, a burly man dressed in a tight-fitted suit. His well-defined muscles were clearly visible from beneath the thick fabric.
Just one look, and Jackson felt a terrible pressure weighing down on his shoulders.
Jackson took a deep breath and tried to calm himself.
He knew the man wasn’t intentionally doing it. It was just something instinctive that the giant spiritual force of the man created.
Just as he was watching, he heard the burly man speak:
"Name and age."
Just like his build, the man’s voice was gruff and heavy, hitting Jackson’s head like a hammer.
"Jackson von Maximus. Sixteen years old."
The burly staff didn’t even blink, but rapidly tapped the empty air in front of him. Soon space rippled, and a small rectangular block of iron appeared in midair. Without turning, the burly man continued:
"Raise your hand."
Jackson did as he was told.
The next moment he felt something prick his palm, and a drop of blood fell directly on top of the iron block.
Before he even had the chance to feel confused, a large amount of information flooded his mind, and a robotic voice echoed in the background.
"Binding successful! Congratulations, Jackson von Maximus. You are now officially registered as an Iron Rank Hunter. Please continue working hard to protect humanity from future threats."
"This...!"
Jackson felt slightly dumbfounded. He didn’t even have time to go through the information when he heard the burly man speak in a cold tone:
"Next!"
Clearly the man wanted Jackson to scram the hell out of there.
Jackson didn’t dare dilly-dally and hurriedly left.
The person waiting behind Jackson, a young girl about his age, nervously stepped out.
Even though there was no test involved in the registering process, anyone facing the burly man would definitely feel nervous.
Meanwhile, Jackson finally found a sitting spot and went through the information that had appeared in his mind.
First was the rules and regulations of the Hunter Association. Second, the path of promotion, how Jackson could get promoted to the second rank.
And finally, most of the information was about the slab of iron that was actually his hunter license as well as proof of identity.
The slab was similar to a smartphone before the apocalypse, but to Jackson it was anything but that.
This piece of metal in his hand was a piece of the most cutting-edge technology that humanity had managed to create.
Using this hunter license, I can access the Hunterverse, a virtual space allowing hunters from all over the world to meet and discuss. It also allowed him to access the part of the internet which was cut off from the normal public.
Not just that, this hunter license also worked as a portable storage space, probably around one cubic meter.
Jackson followed the instructions and tried to send a wisp of spiritual force toward the hunter license, and immediately he saw a space large enough to fit a large refrigerator or even a queen-sized bed. Curiously, this space, however, was completely empty.
Looking at this scene, Jackson could not help but feel excited. If he had this license before, he wouldn’t have had to drop the Blue Horned Deer’s precious antlers.
The more he looked at the item in his hand, the more amazed he felt. This was without a doubt a precious treasure, yet the Hunter Association was handing it out as if it cost nothing.
Suppressing the excitement in his heart, he ignored the Hunterverse for the time being, but moved to the internet.
Immediately, browsing around, he noticed several posts rising and falling like meteors, with each glaring title.
"Legendary Hunter Armstrong finally defeated the Rank Five Overlord Fire-Breathing Crocodile, freeing up a large area for humanity."
"According to rumors, Black Rose Hunting Organization have offered a million mana stones to Hunter Armstrong if he joins them. Not just that, they have also promised a path to the next rank."
Holy... his next rank? That would be going beyond legendary...
Jackson merely glanced through the discussion and felt his heart accelerate. For now, anything that had nothing to do with leveling was of no use to him.
Ignoring the discussion, he moved to the next tab.
Market.
A place where hunters could trade with each other, and also purchase objects and items from the large vault of Hunter Organization.
Glancing through, Jackson spotted even the ultimate-grade pills and drugs that could raise his spiritual force all the way to ten points in just a few days.
But the price behind them made his heart palpitate.
It was something that he could not afford.
Not just pills, there were all sorts of items:
Weapons. Attack techniques. Meditation methods.
Armor. Anything that a hunter would need to defend humanity.
After looking around, he moved to the next section of Market, slightly smaller, in which hunters traded among themselves. All these trades were facilitated by the Hunter Association, so there was no chance of fraud.
Looking around, he spotted a request that caught his eye.
It was posted by a Bronze Rank Hunter called Five Eyes:
Request — Two pairs of Blue Horned Deer horns.
Compensation — 200 mana stones.
Time limit — 24 hours.
It was one of the easiest requests offering good money. Without even blinking, Jackson hurriedly accepted it.
Thankfully he had been fast, or it would have been snagged by other hunters.
The next moment he stepped back and moved out of the building.
By the time all these pieces finished settling, it was already two in the afternoon.
He now had less than four hours of daytime to hunt and complete the mission.
After all, the forest would become too hostile for a newbie like him after dark.
He didn’t waste any more time and quickly headed out to begin hunting.
