SSS Talent: My Undead Evolve Without Limits
Chapter 87: Evolution Paths (3)Malrik’s eyes moved to the last remaining path.
This one grabbed his attention almost immediately. As he read through the description, he found it far more interesting than the other two. It kept Biggie’s massive physical strength intact, but it also granted him control over gravity, along with the speed and agility needed to actually use both.
So it doesn’t sacrifice his strength and it doesn’t sacrifice the gravity, either.
Interesting.
Unlike Titanhide Warbull, this path didn’t push Biggie purely toward physical strength. Unlike Gravitybound Behemoth, it didn’t sacrifice a large chunk of his offensive potential for battlefield control.
It looked more like an attempt to make both work together. A hybrid of the two paths before it.
Malrik started scanning the rest of the details, looking for exactly how these traits would function together.
Then his eyes landed on the next line.
[ High Affinity for Gravity-Related Abilities ]
That part interested him the most. The gravity-related traits weren’t at the same level as the second path, which had built itself almost entirely around them, but they were still a clear part of this one.
And it wasn’t just an added ability tacked on for flavor. Biggie’s own body seemed to have been reshaped to actually make use of it, without his massive frame becoming an obstacle to using it properly.
That way...
Each side could cover for the other’s weaknesses. Biggie’s raw strength gave him the push he needed to move his massive body. Gravity gave him far more control over that movement. And his speed and agility let him exploit both at once.
Malrik started to understand what actually set this path apart from the other two. It wasn’t just combining their traits together. Every piece looked like it had been added in a way that let it strengthen the others.
Then his eyes moved to the resulting Law.
[ Resulting Law: Law of Momentum ]
"Momentum?..."
It wasn’t Steel. It wasn’t Weight. It was an entirely new Law, born from this strange combination. And somehow it still felt oddly logical.
Does it have something to do with movement?
That was the first explanation that crossed his mind, especially given how much this path focused on speed and mobility. But he couldn’t actually tell what the Law did just from its name alone.
Maybe it’s related to building up force while in motion. Or maybe not.
He didn’t have enough to judge it yet. He’d need to actually test it.
Then he looked at the Law’s rank.
[ Law Rank: High ]
"A High-rank Law..."
If this Law had come from merging two Medium-rank Laws, then getting reshaped by his Talent, the result had to carry potential worth taking seriously.
Even without understanding its exact nature yet, reaching this rank alone was enough to make him take it seriously.
Then his eyes moved to the final line.
▸ Evolution Points Required: [ 1000 EP ]
"...A thousand? What the fuck?!"
He’d barely accepted the 400 points on the first path. Then the second one hit him with 550. And now the cost had jumped to a full thousand.
This isn’t evolution anymore... This is straight-up extortion.
This cost was even higher than what it took to evolve a Rare five-star soul into an Epic one-star soul.
And this evolution only produced a Rare five-star soul at the end of it, yet it cost more than evolving a soul all the way into an entirely higher rank. None of this made any sense.
How could an evolution like this cost more than one that crossed a soul into an entirely new rank altogether?
Malrik stared at the number for a moment before going over the path again, searching for something that could possibly justify a cost this absurd.
After a few moments, he started forming his own theory.
Does the evolution cost rise the more complex the resulting race becomes?
The first path had been the simplest of the three, built almost entirely around the physical strength already tied to Biggie’s original race. That was probably why its cost never went past 400 EP.
The second path leaned much more heavily on the gravity-related traits pulled from Gravios’s corpse, which was probably why its cost climbed a bit higher, to 550 EP.
This path combined both.
It didn’t just keep Biggie’s physical strength. It also made use of the gravity-related traits Gravios’s corpse had provided, then reshaped the entire race so it could actually use both at once.
If that’s true... then the more complex the race my Talent is reaching for, the more Evolution Points it demands.
Damn it. It’s like the system was just waiting for any excuse to jack up the price.
The theory made sense, but Malrik didn’t treat it as fact yet. He needed more experiments to confirm that a race’s complexity and potential were really what determined the evolution cost.
Unfortunately, he didn’t have nearly enough Evolution Points left to run those experiments.
Great. I’m the son of one of the most powerful Dukes in the entire Empire, and somehow I still ended up broke. Isn’t that hilarious.
His eyes moved between the three paths again.
This time, he wasn’t reading out of curiosity anymore. He had to decide which one actually deserved to become Biggie’s future.
Titanhide Warbull was the first thing his eyes went back to.
It was the obvious choice. A race built around the physical strength Biggie already had, giving his body a better ability to endure and use it, with the Law of Tempering looking especially promising on top of it.
If he picked this path, Biggie wouldn’t need to change his fighting style at all. He’d simply become a stronger version of his old self.
Malrik thought it over for a moment.
Biggie didn’t just need more strength. Even before this evolution, he’d already been able to crush most opponents through raw force alone. Giving him even more of it would obviously make him stronger in direct confrontations.
But did he actually need to get even better at the one thing he was already good at?
Malrik wasn’t fully convinced. His eyes moved to the Law of Tempering.
He didn’t fully understand what the Law could actually do, but the name alone was enough to make the path tempting.
Still... it was walking in the exact same direction Biggie already stood in. There was nothing wrong with that. If anything, the path was safe and clear. But Malrik wasn’t looking for the safe option. He was looking for the one he could actually invest in and get the most value out of.
His eyes shifted to the second path, Gravitybound Behemoth. This one was completely different.
Instead of pushing Biggie’s physical strength to its absolute limit, it took the gravity-related traits from Gravios’s corpse and made them the core of the new race.
Control over a wide area. Influence over an enemy’s movement. Making it that much harder for anyone to even approach Biggie in the first place. Malrik could see its value immediately.
If Biggie could exert that kind of influence over an entire battlefield, then anyone who stepped into his range would find themselves bound by it, unable to move as freely as they normally could.
He could simply turn the ground itself into a weapon working in his favor.
Malrik had experienced firsthand just how dangerous that kind of control could be when he fought Gravios while the creature was still alive. Even his own souls had struggled against him, and Malrik himself had needed to use Soul Rend to end the fight faster.
If Biggie could reach a similar level of battlefield control, simply stepping into his range would become a real problem for any opponent he faced.
But there was a problem. This path asked Biggie to give up the very thing that made him who he was. His physical strength hadn’t disappeared, but it was no longer the core of the race.
And the more Malrik read the description, the more it felt like this path was trying to turn Biggie into something different.
Not that it was a bad thing, but Malrik couldn’t ignore this line: "Reduced Burst Potential."
He didn’t like the idea of sacrificing the explosive power Biggie already had.
If he was going to use Gravios’s corpse to evolve Biggie in the first place, why sacrifice part of Biggie’s original strength just to gain its gravitational abilities?
Then his eyes moved to the third path.
"Starfall Warbeast." The race name alone was interesting on its own.
This path didn’t ask him to sacrifice either side. It kept Biggie’s physical strength intact, and it kept the gravity-related traits too.
It wasn’t just a compromise between the two previous paths.
The more he thought about it, the more it looked like this path wasn’t just trying to make Biggie better at strength or better at gravity. It gave him an entirely new way to use both at once.
Biggie’s strength would still stay his primary source of power, while gravity could give him far greater control over his own movement, and even over the battlefield itself. And this new body was designed to exploit both during combat.
He looked back at the three paths.
Titanhide Warbull was the safest option, and it would make Biggie stronger at exactly what he already excelled at.
Gravitybound Behemoth was the better option for battlefield control, turning gravity into a core part of his entire fighting style.
As for Starfall Warbeast... he had no idea how far it could actually take him. And maybe that was exactly what pulled him toward it the most.
A thousand Evolution Points was a steep price. But he wasn’t paying it for a guaranteed result. He was betting on the potential this path might open up down the line, which somehow felt like the better investment.
Malrik kept staring at the third path for a few more moments before finally making up his mind. But he didn’t select it right away. Instead, he turned to Biggie.
The bull was still standing exactly where he’d left him, watching Malrik with that same innocent expression that didn’t match his size at all.
" If this turns out badly, you’ll pay for it. Dearly. "
Biggie kept staring at him with the same blank innocence, clearly understanding nothing of the threat aimed at him.
Malrik sighed, then selected the third path, allocated 1,000 Evolution Points, and let the process begin.
A massive amount of mana started draining out of Malrik’s body, more than usual, more even than what evolving Lokris had cost him. And yet he didn’t feel the exhaustion he usually did during evolution, since his mana pool had grown considerably since reaching Awakened rank.
"Hmm... I expected to feel a bit dizzy during this."
Green and black mana began gathering around Biggie and Gravios’s corpse, slowly circling both of them until it formed into a massive sphere of energy.
This time, it looked far bigger than usual, as if its size had scaled to match Biggie’s enormous body and the materials being used in the evolution.
Malrik understood that this process wouldn’t be like the ones before it, and it would probably need more time to complete, especially since this evolution wasn’t just raising Biggie’s race in rank. It was reshaping him entirely, built on different materials and different Laws.
And since it was going to take a while, he decided to put the time to use elsewhere.
"Since the evolution’s going to take some time... might as well go through the rest of these corpses and see if there’s anything else useful."
