SSS Talent: My Undead Evolve Without Limits
Chapter 88: Fusion of Laws (1)Malrik looked at the Evolution Points he had left and felt a genuine ache in his chest.
[ Total EP: 800 ]
He had 800 left now, and he needed to use them wisely. Nine Morveth corpses lay in front of him, each one carrying a Law Seed, each one a candidate for becoming a Fallen-rank soul if his theory held. Evolution could push a Law Seed forward and speed up the breakthrough, the same way it had with Lokris.
After his conversation with Lilith, he knew the Morveth commander hadn’t retreated. It was preparing another attack. That left Malrik no time to waste. He needed to be ready.
His eyes moved across the nine bodies, and after a few moments, settled on two of them.
They were the strongest of the group, or at least that was what the auras still clinging to them, even in death, seemed to say.
One corpse was wrapped in a faint aura that carried something poisonous. The other radiated a clear cold, cold enough that the air around it felt colder than everywhere else.
Malrik looked at the frozen one, studying the chill bleeding off it.
Does this one carry an Ice Law Seed?
The Law of Ice was one of the most well-known Medium-rank Laws in the world. It was originally a derived Law, born from merging a Low-rank Water Law Seed with a Low-rank Wind Law Seed.
There were two common ways to reach it.
The first was to study Water and Wind Laws separately, then attempt to merge them. The resulting fusion was never truly complete, but it allowed the user to retain access to both Water and Wind while also gaining the ability to wield Ice.
The second method was to study Ice Law directly.
For anyone without exceptional talent, this path was far more difficult. Understanding a Medium-rank Law was vastly harder than understanding a Low-rank Law.
However, mastering Ice directly also came with an advantage: with a deep enough understanding of its structure, the user could eventually manipulate its underlying aspects and make use of both Water and Wind separately.
At first glance, the first method seemed far easier. Water and Wind were both Low-rank Laws, and understanding either of them was far less demanding than studying a Medium-rank Law like Ice.
On top of that, the user could retain access to both Water and Wind while developing Ice through their fusion. It seemed like the obvious choice.
But things were not that simple.
A fusion between two Low-rank Laws could never produce a true Medium-rank Law. At best, a user could push both Laws to an extremely high level of understanding and combine them in a way that approached the power of a Medium-rank Law.
The same principle applied to higher ranks. Two Medium-rank Laws could not simply be fused together and produce a true High-rank Law.
A genuine Law of a higher rank represented an entirely different level of power and understanding. This was something everyone in the world understood.
Or at least, it had been. That was until Malrik’s Talent, Infinite Evolution, appeared.
During Biggie’s evolution, Infinite Evolution had pushed two Medium-rank Laws into a High-rank one, exactly like what had happened across all three of Biggie’s evolution paths.
That wasn’t hard. It was flatly impossible by every standard anyone else in this world lived by.
A small thrill ran through Malrik. If his guess was right, this meant he was about to add another Medium-rank Law Seed carrier to his army.
Then his eyes shifted to the other corpse, and he noticed its poisonous aura matched the cold one in strength, maybe even surpassed it slightly. His excitement climbed further.
If the strength of the aura reflects the strength of the Law Seed to some degree... then this one might be Medium-rank too.
Has luck finally decided to stop messing with me?
The thought didn’t last long. He remembered why he was here in the first place, along with the injuries from his last fight that had left him unconscious for twelve straight hours. He quickly pushed the thought aside.
Maybe this is just compensation for the hell I’ve been through lately.
Malrik walked toward the smaller corpse first.
It belonged to a woman, human-looking, short enough that she looked almost dwarfed next to most Morveth, with a slender frame and small features. Her face was strikingly pale. Her purple eyes were still open, frozen in shock.
She wore tattered dark clothing, and a massive mushroom cap covered her head, its rim extending past her shoulders. It caught Malrik’s attention immediately.
The cap looked strange in a way that was hard to ignore, like it wasn’t something she wore at all, but an actual part of her body.
His eyes moved to her neck. A clean cut had opened her throat, and several long marks covered the rest of her body, clearly left by a sword.
Whoever killed her clearly knew how to use a sword. And judging by those wounds, they were ruthless too.
I wonder who did this.
Truthfully, he already had a rough idea who it was.
What a terrifying woman. I should be more careful around her from now on.
Then his eyes moved to the second corpse.
This one had belonged to a massive beast, noticeably smaller than Biggie but still huge. Long white hair trailed down its back, and countless holes riddled its body, marks that looked like they’d come from arrows punching straight through.
The wounds weren’t the only thing that caught Malrik’s attention. Burns covered much of the body too. Large sections of skin had blackened and charred completely.
This time, Malrik had no idea who had killed this one.
I’ll ask Kael about this one later.
But for now, there was no reason to put it off any longer.
Let’s get started.
Malrik raised his hand, and green mana started pouring out of his body, gathering around both corpses at once.
The green mana flowed around both bodies, and figures with the same features began emerging from them, like they’d been living there all along and had simply decided to step out.
A few moments later, a human-looking woman and a white-furred beast stood in front of Malrik.
The small woman still wore her massive mushroom cap. The white-haired beast stood beside her. The moment both had fully formed, they dropped to their knees before Malrik in silence.
The system window appeared.
[ Resurrection successful. ]
[ This soul has met the requirements for naming. ]
[ Would you like to assign a name? ]
[ Yes / No ]
Malrik looked at both of them.
He’d expected finding names for them to be easy. But when the moment actually came, he found himself just staring, nothing coming to mind.
What should I even call them?
His eyes settled on the woman first. It was hard to look past the mushroom cap that defined her whole shape.
Wait. Mushroom?
Hmm... mushroom. Yeah.
"Lady Mushroom."
[ Name assigned: Lady Mushroom. ]
Not a brilliant name by any measure, but at least it was easy to remember and fit her look well. His eyes moved to the other creature.
The creature’s long white hair reminded Malrik of a show he’d watched in his previous life. A familiar line from the show suddenly came to mind.
"Winter is coming..."
Winter... Yeah, that’ll do.
"Your name is Winter."
[ Name assigned: Winter. ]
At least this one’s better than trying to make something up myself.
Why does the system always dump the naming burden on me? It could just assign one and be done with it.
Malrik kept looking between Lady Mushroom and Winter, sinking deep into thought.
If I evolve both of these, they should both reach Fallen-rank.
He decided to pull up both their status panels to study them more carefully.
[ Name: Lady Mushroom ]
[ Race: Sporecap ]
[ Rank: Awakened ]
[ Level: 50 ]
[ Potential: Rare ★★★ ]
[ Law Seed: Venom ]
[ Law Rank: Medium ]
[ Skills: Explosive Mushroom, Mycelial Infection, Venom Mist ]
Malrik’s eyes lingered on the rank of Lady Mushroom’s Law Seed. Medium-rank, just as he’d guessed.
That meant his earlier guess hadn’t been far off. He opened Winter’s status panel next.
[ Name: Winter ]
[ Race: Frost Wraith ]
[ Rank: Awakened ]
[ Level: 50 ]
[ Potential: Rare ★ ]
[ Law Seed: Ice ]
[ Law Rank: Medium ]
[ Skills: Ice Spears, Frost Step, Frozen Ground ]
Malrik looked between the two screens again.
Both sat at Awakened Rank, Level 50, but their potentials were completely different.
Lady Mushroom’s potential was Rare ★★★, while Winter’s was only Rare ★. Following the normal evolution path, Lady Mushroom would need 300 EP to reach Rare ★★★★★. Winter would only need 100 EP to reach Rare ★★★.
That came to 400 points total, leaving him another 400 to spend however he wanted.
Why not try something else?
