The perimeter of Pier 42 was a fortress.
High-grade floodlights swept across the perimeter fences, illuminating at least a dozen heavily armed syndicate mercenaries patrolling the gravel lots, assault rifles drawn and night-vision optics mounted.
These weren’t low-level thugs; their discipline and tactical formations revealed high-tier private military training... resources Vivian Stark should never have had the money or connections to hire.
Damian didn’t slow the car down.
With a deafening crunch of metal, the reinforced grill tore through the iron gates at eighty miles per hour.
Walter’s two trailing SUVs swerved into flanking positions, doors flying open as Damian’s tactical security engaged the perimeter guards in a ferocious firefight.
Muzzle flashes strobed through the cold fog. Gun shot rounds sparked off the asphalt.
"Who the hell funded this army?!" Jullian shouted over the deafening gunfire, ducking low as a spray of automatic rounds shattered the car’s passenger side mirror. "Vivian’s accounts were frozen days ago!"
"It doesn’t matter," Damian growled, his face a mask of lethal focus as he kicked his door open, firing two precise rounds to drop a shooter advancing on their blind side. "Move!"
Leaving Walter and the security team to suppress the perimeter guards, Damian and Jullian cut straight into the rear access stairwell, clearing the upper floor through brutal, close-quarters gunplay before charging down into the subterranean basement.

Below in the basement, the floor was chaos.
Vivian, clutching her punctured, bleeding shoulder where Clara had driven the iron bolt, violently kicked Clara off her. Vivian scrambled across the concrete, her bloody fingers closing around the grip of her fallen pistol.
"You’re dead!" Vivian shrieked, swinging the barrel toward Clara’s chest.
Bang!
The heavy basement door blew inward, and a shot cracked from the stairwell. Jullian’s round struck the concrete an inch from Vivian’s knee, sending chips of stone flying.
Vivian screamed, rolling behind a rusted metal partition as Jullian stormed in, firing suppressing rounds to drive her back.
"Clara!" Jullian’s voice tore through the damp air, raw with a desperate terror nobody had ever heard from him. He lunged toward her, dropping his weapon to pull his heavy coat around her shivering, bruised body, gathering her bleeding form into his arms. "I’ve got you. You’re safe, look at me... I’ve got you."
Clara clung to his chest, shaking uncontrollably, her tears soaking into his collar.
Across the room, Damian reached Anastasia in two strides. He dropped to one knee, pulling a blade to sever the thick hemp ropes binding her wrists and ankles.
"Anastasia," Damian breathed, his tone fracturing with a raw vulnerability he had never once exposed. His gloved hand reached up, trembling slightly as his fingers hovered near the bleeding, swollen gash on her cheek. "I’m here. You’re safe, let’s get you out of here."
Ana stared into his dark obsidian eyes. The words Vivian had whispered... He knew every lie... he enjoyed watching you drown... hung like poisoned glass between them.
Instead of leaning into his touch, Ana instinctively flinched, pulling her face back from his hand.
Damian froze, a flicker of profound confusion crossing his dark features.
Before he could speak, the concrete stairwell behind them roared with boots.
Three heavily armed syndicate operatives in unmarked tactical gear descended the stairs, raising automatic submachine guns to pin the room in a crossfire.
"Ambush!" Jullian yelled, dragging Clara behind a concrete pillar.
Vivian saw her opening. Bleeding heavily, she scrambled through a low maintenance tunnel at the rear of the basement, dragged along by two syndicate bodyguards who sealed the heavy blast hatch behind them.
In the center of the room, the lead operative leveled his rifle straight at Anastasia’s exposed back.
There was no time to reach cover.
Damian moved entirely on instinct. He threw his entire body over Anastasia, wrapping his arms around her head and spine, shielding her completely beneath his broad frame.
BANG! BANG! BANG!
A burst of automatic fire ripped through the air.
Two heavy-caliber rounds tore brutally into Damian’s back and right shoulder.
The violent impact jerked his body with a sickening, wet thud. A sharp, ragged gasp tore from Damian’s throat, but his arms never unlocked from around Ana.
He locked his jaw, his teeth bared in agony, absorbing the full force of the bullets to keep every single piece of shrapnel from touching her skin.
"Damian!" Jullian fired three rapid rounds from behind the pillar, dropping the lead shooter instantly as Walter’s squad breached from the upper stairs to eliminate the remaining two mercenaries.
Anastasia lay pinned beneath Damian’s heavy, trembling weight.
Warm, thick crimson soaked through his tailored wool coat, flooding rapidly across her chest and hands.
"Damian..." Ana whispered in rising terror, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she pressed against his back, feeling the hot, gushing blood coating her fingers. "Damian, look at me!"
Damian forced his head up with agonizing effort.
His face was ghostly pale, blood welling at the corner of his clenched jaw, but there was no softness or gentle relief in his features.
His obsidian eyes flared with a dark, suffocating intensity... an unhinged, possessive fury so raw it seemed to defy his failing body.
He gripped the back of her neck with blood-stained fingers, pulling her inches from his lips, his voice dropping into a ragged, lethal rasp.
"You don’t get to run from me, Anastasia... Not in this life. You’re mine."
His grip went limp, and his heavy frame slumped forward against her shoulder, his consciousness finally giving out to the dark.
"Damian! Damian!" Ana’s scream fractured in her throat, her hands buried in the warm, gushing crimson pouring from his back.
Walter and two tactical medics dropped to their knees beside them, tearing open trauma kits. "Pulse is faint, barely beating! We’re losing pressure fast... get the trauma ambulance down here now!"

Across the concrete floor, Jullian held a trembling, battered Clara close against his chest with one arm, his other hand reaching down to hoist the dead lead mercenary by his tactical vest.
Jullian ripped open the shooter’s collar, searching for a call sign or identification. Inked fresh into the dead man’s skin was a distinct, sharp mark... an insignia that didn’t belong to any city gang, corporate security firm, or the bankrupt Stark family.
Beside the corpse, the fallen comms unit suddenly crackled to life with chilling, static-laced clarity.
A deep, cultured voice came through the speaker, demanding status with cold, methodical precision...
"Report. Is Vivian Stark secured? Did you capture Anastasia Vance alive? Are Damian Sterling and Clara Reed neutralized?"
A heavy, suffocating silence hung in the static air.
Jullian’s face drained of every drop of color.
His eyes snapped toward Anastasia kneeling in Damian’s pooling blood.
Vivian hadn’t hired these men. She wasn’t the mastermind... she was just another piece on the board. And the true planner of this nightmare was listening on the other end of the line.
