System Distributing Villain: Guide to Conquering Heroines' Hearts!
Chapter 100 | No More RunningThe countless thoughts in Emma’s head vanished the moment his words reached her ears. She slowly raised her head and looked at him with a mix of expectation and disbelief.
Dante smiled at her, gripping her hand a little tighter. "I won’t run away this time. Trust me."
Ba-thump!
She stared into his eyes, searching for any sign that he was lying. Any trace of the old Dante who would say something warm and then disappear the next day. Any hint that this was just another one of his whims.
She found nothing but him looking back at her with a certainty she had never seen on his face before.
She dropped her gaze and muttered under her breath. "You better keep those words, idiot~"
Dante wanted to say more but held himself back. He had said enough. The rest, he would prove with his actions.
They stepped onto the dance floor and the golden spotlight found them immediately.
Emma placed her hand on his shoulder and felt his settle on her waist. Their free hands found each other and their fingers intertwined.
The orchestra drew the first note and they started moving.
For the opening bars, neither of them tried to take control. They just swayed together, matching each other’s breathing more than the music, like two people who weren’t ready to commit to a direction yet.
Then Emma realised something.
’He’s never danced before.’ In all the years she had known Dante, he had barely attended dance classes, let alone attended an event like this. He avoided crowds and hated formal settings, so there was no way he knew what he was doing right now.
She made her decision instantly and tightened her grip on his shoulder.
"Follow me." She looked up at him. "I’ll make sure you don’t trip."
Dante pretended to be a bit embarrassed and let her take the lead.
Emma moved first and he followed. She knew exactly what she was doing. She had been doing this since she was old enough to attend her first gala, and it showed.
"You know, I used to imagine this." She spoke in a low, gentle voice as she pulled him through a turn and caught him on the other side. "Dancing with you at one of these things."
"Back then, you wouldn’t even come with me no matter how many times I asked."
Dante listened to her, his eyes never leaving her face.
She guided him through the next sequence, feeling his weight shift wherever she pushed him. He was following her without a single complaint, and for some reason, that made her chest tighten.
"I told myself I’d stop waiting for you. But then I realised how foolish I was." Her hand pressed a little harder against his shoulder as she led him into the next turn.
"So you better mean those words. Because if you run again after saying all that, I’ll chase you down and drag you back myself..."
Before she could finish, she noticed a smile forming on his lips. The next moment, his hand pressed into her back and pulled her in.
The rest of her words didn’t leave her throat as he spun her into a turn, and when she came back, she was pressed against his chest.
’Wha... what is happening?’
Dante didn’t give her any time as he moved again and her feet followed on their own.
The stiffness she had been working around the entire dance was completely gone. His grip, his posture, everything about the way he moved had changed.
This was not the same man she was leading ten seconds ago.
’Since when can he dance THIS WELL?! This bastard was pretending the whole time!’
A blue panel floated in Dante’s vision.
[Dance Master]
[Grade: Rare]
[Description: Unlocks mastery of all dance forms. The user’s body moves with decades of training in every style and automatically syncs with any partner’s rhythm and seizes the lead with ease.]
’Another 5,000 points well spent,’ he thought with a smile.
Naturally, this wasn’t a one-time investment either, just like Golden Hands. He would have to use this a lot in the future.
Coming out of his thoughts, he didn’t try to take over completely. When she stepped forward, he gave her space. When she tried to lead, he let her for a few beats before gently steering them back. The lead passed between them like neither of them owned it.
Emma’s resistance faded on its own as she understood his intentions.
So she let go.
Her hand slid from his shoulder to the back of his neck and stayed there. She stopped counting steps and just moved with him.
The final notes came and he pulled her into one last turn. Her gown fanned out around them, ice-blue against golden light.
When she came back, his hand was on her waist and hers was on his chest. Their faces were close enough to feel each other’s breath.
The music stopped and neither of them moved.
Emma was just looking at him and he was looking right back.
Around them, couples were separating and clapping for the orchestra. Conversations picked back up across the floor but the two of them were still standing in the center, his hand on her waist and hers on his chest.
"How long are you planning to stand like this?" Emma said, trying to sound annoyed but her voice came out softer than she wanted.
"Me? I’m not the one with my hand on someone’s chest." Dante looked down at her hand with a grin.
Her eyes followed his gaze and her cheeks went red. She pulled her hand back like she had touched a hot pan.
"You..." She stepped closer and dropped her voice so low only he could hear it. "You knew how to dance this entire time, didn’t you?"
Dante put on the most innocent expression he could make and shrugged. "I have no idea what you’re talking about."
Emma wanted to smack his shoulder hard enough to leave a mark but as she moved, her left heel wobbled and slipped halfway off her foot.
She froze on the spot, refusing to take another step.
Dante’s eyes dropped to her feet before she could say anything.
Without a word, he slowly lowered himself to one knee.
"Don’t move. I’ll fix it."
"Mm."
In the distance, the crowd who had been watching the two of them glued together even after the dance ended went completely silent the moment Dante’s knee hit the floor.
Then the whispers exploded.
"No way."
"Is he actually—"
"Someone record this. SOMEONE RECORD THIS!"
"If this man pulls out a ring right now, I’m going to cry harder than she will."
"Forget the ring. She bought him a skyscraper. What’s he supposed to give her, the moon?"
"I’ve been coming to these galas for over a decade and nothing has EVER come close to this."
"She bought a whole building for him, danced with him like that, and now he’s on one knee? This has to be what I think it is."
"This is definitely a PROPOSAL!"
