Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

The morning had gone surprisingly smoothly.

Blake woke up on time, which was already an achievement considering how badly he’d been sleeping lately.

By the time he got out of bed, Myles was already in the kitchen making breakfast, moving around the house with that same quiet efficiency he seemed to apply to absolutely everything.

Breakfast was uneventful, getting ready was uneventful. Even the walk to the bus stop was uneventful...

And yet Blake couldn’t shake the anxiety sitting heavily in his chest.

He kept telling himself it wasn’t that serious.

He was just going back to school.

That was it.

He’d gone through this before.

Well... technically, it wasn’t exactly the same context, since he was never away for that long without giving an explanation from the start, or at the very least in between!

As they waited at the bus stop, Myles’ hand brushed lightly against his.

Blake glanced at him.

Myles looked ahead.

"Are you anxious about your studies?"

Blake let out a nervous laugh.

"Actually, it isn’t that bad."

He scratched his cheek.

’I mean, I already went through high school once. Well... sort of.’

Even if it was in another life.

He immediately shoved that thought away.

"It’s a pain, obviously, but I’m not really anxious about the actual studying. I’ve been learning well, even better than I expected."

"Better than you expected?"

"Yeah."

Myles looked at him.

"Your grades were never bad to begin with."

Blake’s mouth closed.

"Right."

Oh.

Myles knew some things about him now. Not everything, obviously. He still had no idea that Blake had literally transmigrated into another world.

But apparently, Myles had paid enough attention to his school records to know that he was never exactly a bad student.

’Well, at least I never once got different grades from the real Blake... must be because the concepts are mostly familiar to what I already studied.’

Different terminology here and there and scientific subjects could be quite different, but the general principles were similar to what he’d learned before.

That made everything considerably easier.

Myles looked forward again.

"Then why are you anxious?"

Blake hesitated.

"It’s just..."

He rubbed the back of his neck.

"It’s been a while since I saw Asher and Anthony, and I don’t really know what kind of explanation I’m supposed to give them."

"There is no explanation to give if you don’t want to give one."

Blake stared at him.

’If it were that easy, I wouldn’t feel doomed right now!’

"Yeah, well..."

He sighed.

"I know."

The bus arrived soon after.

Myles walked ahead and stepped inside. Blake followed immediately, holding onto the railing as he climbed aboard.

There weren’t as many people as usual.

Blake found a seat and sat down.

Myles remained standing beside him, one hand wrapped around the overhead handle.

Blake glanced up at him.

He was about to tell him to sit down.

Then he remembered the whole thing about seating privileges.

He shut his mouth.

’Oh. Right.’

He’d technically told Myles not to sit next to him before.

But after everything that had happened... well.

It wasn’t as if he could exactly keep pretending those restrictions mattered.

"Myles, you can—"

A student approached the empty seat beside him.

Blake froze.

’Oh, come on! The timing is shit.’

The student was already reaching for the seat when Myles simply moved.

He sat down beside Blake without waiting for permission.

The student stopped and looked at the two of them, his expression becaming increasingly confused.

"...Uh."

He promptly walked away and sat somewhere else.

Blake stared after him.

’That was awkward.’

He slowly looked at Myles.

"You know what?"

Myles turned toward him.

"I’m just going to let you sit here from now on. Like, in general!"

Blake’s cheeks warmed slightly.

"All the other restrictions are lifted too."

"Why?"

Blake looked away.

"Because..."

He scratched the back of his head.

"After everything that happened, it’s only fair. And besides, I was never actually angry at you for more than those first two days after everything went wrong with Zlatan and some other stuff."

A faint sound escaped Myles.

It wasn’t quite a laugh.

More like a quiet exhale with the slightest hint of amusement behind it.

Blake immediately looked over.

"You laughed!"

Myles wasn’t smiling though, but there was something different in his expression.

Blake narrowed his eyes.

"Why are you laughing?"

"I already knew."

Blake blinked.

"You knew what?"

"That you weren’t angry after a short time."

Blake’s face warmed.

"Then why did you ask?"

Myles didn’t answer.

Instead, he leaned closer.

Blake’s eyes widened slightly as Myles brought his face close to his ear.

"Thank you."

The words were barely above a whisper.

Blake’s entire brain short-circuited as he immediately looked away.

’Nope, nope, nope, nope... I’m not weak to his face, I’m not, I’m not!’

The bus stopped.

Blake practically jumped out of his seat.

"Here we are!"

Myles followed.

"Yes."

Blake walked off the bus a little too quickly.

’Woah, woah, woah, there is absolutely no time to think about romance in this current situation!’

He had a school day to survive.

The walk toward the school building was considerably less peaceful.

Blake was restless.

He kept looking ahead, then looking away, then checking the surrounding students as if Asher and Anthony might suddenly appear from behind a tree.

He really wanted to avoid them, just for today.

Maybe tomorrow too.

Maybe forever.

Unfortunately, that wasn’t realistic.

First, they’d notice.

Second, avoiding them after disappearing for days would make things even more suspicious.

And third, they were his friends, he couldn’t just pretend they didn’t exist.

Blake sighed.

’Just act normal. That is all. What is so difficult about that.’

He entered the classroom with Myles and took his usual seat beside him.

For a moment, Blake simply stared at the desk he avoided to sit in for quite a while.

It felt strangely nostalgic.

The same classroom.

The same chair.

The same place beside Myles.

Yet after everything that had happened, it somehow felt like he’d been away for months.

The lessons began.

And surprisingly, nothing happened with the teachers, too, they simply continued with the lessons as if Blake hadn’t vanished from school for a considerable amount of time, before finals, too.

He slowly relaxed.

’Maybe this really isn’t so bad.’

Eventually, lunch time arrived.

The moment the class was dismissed, everyone began filtering out.

Blake walked alongside Myles toward the cafeteria.

Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

Ahead of them, walking toward the cafeteria, were two painfully familiar figures.

Asher and Anthony.

Neither had noticed him yet.

Blake’s stomach tightened as he instinctively slowed down.

’Oh, great!’

Myles followed his gaze.

His expression remained completely unimpressed.

He looked from Blake to the two boys ahead.

"What is wrong?"

He immediately looked away.

"Nothing."

Myles looked at him.

"Is that right?"

"Really. It’s nothing!"

His voice came out slightly too high.

Myles leaned down.

He lowered his voice so that only Blake could hear.

"Is it because of their identities?"

Blake froze completely, his foot stopping halfway through a step, eyes widening as his heart seemed to slam against his ribs.

’What.’

For a second, Blake couldn’t even breathe.

He slowly turned his head toward Myles.

"What...?"

He looked at him calmly.

Blake’s face had gone pale.

’Their identities? Haha. What identities is he talking about? What does he mean by that?! Does he mean their identities as my friends? Their families!!?’

Myles couldn’t know.

He couldn’t possibly know.

Could he?

Blake stared at him, his mind racing through every single conversation he’d ever had with Myles.

Blake swallowed.

"...What do you mean by their identities?"

Myles didn’t answer immediately.

He simply looked at Blake’s increasingly panicked face.

Ba-dump. Ba-dump. Ba-dump.

’It never once even looked like he knew!!’
