Blake got out of the building and crouched down outside, sighing heavily.
’Honestly, that wasn’t nearly as intense as I expected it to be...’
He looked back toward the factory. There had been a lot of people, and a lot of fighting.
Yet somehow, he wasn’t nearly as exhausted as he thought he’d be.
"What is it?"
Myles landed beside him. There wasn’t a single drop of blood on him, not even a stain. Unsurprisingly, he killed them cleanly.
Blake looked away.
"...nothing."
He immediately stood.
The reason he was outside while Myles was killing them... was because from the start, Myles hadn’t brought him with him because he needed help.
He had brought Blake there to observe him.
To see how he fought, to measure his combat abilities and physical strength for himself.
The suit had been excluded from those calculations, of course. Myles could measure what the armor added separately.
Blake swallowed.
The thought of those people dying made his stomach twist.
It left him slightly nauseous.
He knew the context. As such, their deaths weren’t exactly unexpected.
Still... knowing someone is getting killed was different from knowing that people could die.
And perhaps the fact that Myles had already killed in front of him once, during a moment when Blake had barely been clinging to consciousness, was another reason he wasn’t immediately throwing up.
He simply stood there for another second, a little dazed.
Myles began flying, which definitely woke him up and made him follow.
For a while, neither spoke.
Then Myles finally started giving him feedback.
"Your movement has improved, compared to when we trained together."
Blake looked toward him.
"Really?"
"Yes. However, you’re relying too much on your strength."
"I barely used it..."
"You did, you simply weren’t aware of it."
Myles continued flying beside him.
"When someone attacks you, you instinctively try to absorb the impact rather than redirect it. The suit compensates for that, but your body shouldn’t depend on it."
’Well actually it does...’
Nonetheless, Blake nodded slowly.
"Your mobility is better. You also understand the propulsion system quite easily."
’Well, that’s also because of my skill... whenever I’m learning something with him, it automatically activates.’
"But you hesitate at times."
"...Oh."
"You see an opening and spend too much time deciding what to do with it."
"I don’t want to accidentally kill someone."
"I know."
Myles glanced at him.
"But hesitation will get you hurt. You don’t need to kill them, that’s my role. You need to stop them."
Blake nodded.
"So I should aim for disabling attacks... yeah technically you already taught me that."
"Yes. Don’t waste energy trying to overpower someone stronger than you."
Blake hummed.
"And our teamwork?"
"It was okay."
Blake brightened.
Myles continued.
"You adapt quickly when someone gives you instructions."
’Thanks, even though that only works with you...’
"But you still need to learn how to anticipate me."
Blake blinked.
"Anticipate you?"
"If we’re going to fight together, you can’t always wait for me to tell you where an opponent is."
"Right, yeah..."
"You should already know where I’m moving."
Blake shuddered.
That sounded a little difficult.
He wasn’t sure he was going to survive training with Myles again.
Especially if they were going to train... all out, or something close to it.
Myles suddenly spoke again.
"You’re physically stronger than your body can technically handle."
Blake looked at him.
"What?"
"Your strength is above that of an average human."
"Oh, is that right..."
"It’s not unheard of among humans. There are people with unusually high physical capabilities. But you’ll have to be careful with your body’s limits."
Blake scratched the back of his head.
"Yeah... well, it never really had repercussions on me."
"Your body has adapted."
Blake looked to the side... it was so difficult to live with this.
"Muscle, bone, connective tissue, and your cardiovascular system can adapt gradually to repeated physical stress. If you’ve always been stronger than average and your body has developed alongside that strength, you may not experience immediate problems."
"Of course, I know as much..."
"Your body can tolerate a great deal without giving you an obvious warning. That doesn’t mean there is no limit."
Blake hummed.
Well... only he knew about the buffs and skills.
It wasn’t like he could tell Myles that the reason his body could suddenly push itself far beyond what it should was because of abilities that shouldn’t technically exist.
So there wasn’t much else he could say.
Myles continued.
"Your strength doesn’t rival someone like me."
Blake looked offended, although he knew that already.
"Woah."
"But even so, you can cause minimal damage."
"Huh... minimal?"
"Or create a distraction, temporarily stop someone and disrupt their balance."
Blake stared ahead.
’Is that supposed to be a compliment?’
He decided to take it as one.
"Where are we going now?"
"Near a lake, deep in the mountains."
"Alright..."
They continued flying.
Blake looked toward the mountains ahead.
He had been thinking about upgrading all of his buffs.
He should have done it sooner.
Unfortunately, he’d only gotten his ungodly amount of money after everyone had already determined that his physical strength couldn’t be particularly impressive.
In general, it simply couldn’t work.
As Myles had mentioned, the fact that Blake was already this strong with a body like his was surprising.
Suspicious, even.
If he suddenly became significantly stronger, some of Myles’s coworkers might start distrusting him, and that would be a disaster.
He couldn’t afford to lose their trust, not now.
Eventually, they descended into the mountains.
After flying for a while longer, both landed.
Myles looked toward Blake.
"Keep my feedback in mind."
Blake nodded.
"I will."
"I don’t expect you to immediately become better, but I expect you to understand."
"Count on me!"
Blake smiled. Then, he mouthed:
"I’ll sneak for my lover."
Myles got tense him.
Blake walked toward the structure.
It was a cottage. Or at least, that’s what he would call it. It was too small and too strange to properly be called one.
Still, it was a building.
Blake entered. The atmosphere was different from the previous one.
It was considerably calmer here.
If anything, actually, it was ominous.
The people inside looked downright depressed.
They sat around staring into nothingness.
Nobody spoke and seemed particularly interested doing anything.
Blake began searching.
He checked everything, but there was absolutely nothing.
"Who are you?"
Blake remained silent.
He continued searching.
The man stared at him.
Then, he rubbed his eyes, forgetting about him, and simply returned to whatever he’d been doing.
Blake sighed heavily.
"Annoying."
[ Warning: The skill "I’ll Sneak For My Lover" is now unavailable. ]
Blake groaned.
"Oh, come on!"
Every person in the room immediately turned toward him.
Their expressions changed.
Blake froze.
"...Right."
The first attack came.
Blake jumped backward.
Myles entered at the same time.
The room erupted into chaos.
Blake remembered the feedback.
Don’t absorb.
He sidestepped the first punch instead of blocking it.
The man stumbled past him.
Blake struck the back of his knee, making the man dropped.
Blake immediately looked toward another attacker.
He was already coming, which made him activat the propulsion system.
Instead of flying directly at him, he moved sideways, which made the attacker miss.
Blake grabbed his arm and used his momentum to pull him forward.
It was nowhere near perfect, but still...
Myles appeared behind the man, and with one strike, he was down.
Blake grinned.
"Okay!"
He was getting it.
Another man attacked from the side.
He noticed him this time, so he ducked.
Myles’s attack passed over him, and Blake immediately kicked the man’s ankle.
The man lost his balance.
Myles finished the opening.
Another enemy rushed Blake.
Blake tried to redirect the attack.
It worked... sort of. The impact still knocked him backward.
He stumbled.
"Too slow," Myles said.
"I know!"
Blake recovered.
The attacker charged again.
This time, Blake flew upward.
The man swung beneath him.
Blake twisted in midair.
Instead of punching the man’s head, he struck his shoulder and used the propulsion to push him sideways.
The man collided with another opponent, and they both fell.
Myles moved through the gap, two quick strikes and they were both down.
Another attacker approached.
Blake moved first.
He activated his boots, shot forward, then abruptly changed direction.
The man’s eyes followed him.
Too late.
Blake struck his side.
The attack didn’t do much damage, but it did distract him.
Myles took advantage of it immediately.
The man collapsed.
Blake looked at Myles, and he nodded.
A tiny gesture, but he understood.
The final opponent rushed them.
Blake moved left.
Myles moved right.
The man hesitated.
Blake swept his leg, and Myles struck. The man crashed down.
Silence returned.
Blake exhaled.
"Okay..."
He looked around.
Myles crouched beside one of the men, who was barely conscious.
"What are you doing?"
Myles opened part of the man’s mechanical suit.
He searched inside.
Blake watched.
Then froze.
His eyes widened.
A smile spread across his face.
"Wait."
Myles pulled something free. It was a bracelet.
Blake immediately crouched beside him.
"Is that...?"
Myles examined it.
Blake’s eyes practically sparkled.
"The blueprints?"
Myles pressed the red gem embedded in the bracelet.
A hologram immediately projected into the air.
Blake’s mouth fell open.
Myles looked at the projection.
"Yes."
Blake grinned.
"We found them!!"
