Blake was on the bus.

He sat near the window, one hand resting against his thigh while the other occasionally adjusted the cap sitting over his head.

He’d been nervous when he first left the base, but now he was feeling much better.

He glanced at the reflection in the window. The face staring back at him wasn’t his. I’ll Sneak For My Lover felt different; he couldn’t quite put his finger on it.

The skill had been upgraded to A-grade, but he hadn’t had much opportunity to test it properly.

Still... everything seemed to be working. If he was right in front of someone, looking at them in eye, they would’ve still noticed him, even if for a short time.

But now it was different, even if he tried staring at someone while being right in front of them, he still wasn’t being noticed.

Nobody was giving him a second glance.

’Gosh, this infiltration will be far easier!’

The bus eventually stopped.

Blake stood and stepped off. The hospital stood only a short distance away.

He’d been given the location of the entrance beforehand.

’I never really had to enter a building not related to AL-TECH, to get into the underground part... never expected my first experience of that to be at a hospital.’

He thought that, but of course he already knew about these disgusting location choices. Hospitals were one of the easiest places for AL-TECH to commit such an act.

People came and went constantly and, most importantly, people could disappear inside without immediately attracting attention.

A person being wheeled into a restricted section wouldn’t necessarily raise suspicion.

Neither would an ambulance entering through a secured entrance.

There were countless ways to move someone through a hospital without anyone outside knowing where they’d gone.

Blake entered through the main doors.

He adjusted his cap and walked forward.

Of course, nobody stopped him as he passed the reception desk.

’So far, so good...’

The secret entrance wasn’t located somewhere obvious.

It was hidden inside one of the hospital’s older wings, where several rooms were used for storage and staff access.

Blake walked through the corridor, his heart beating faster now.

He eventually reached the restroom and entered. There were only two people inside, one was washing his hands while the other was looking at his phone.

Neither paid attention to Blake.

He walked toward the far end of the room.

’These should be the ones...’

Blake crouched, poking the tiles.

He pulled the energy gun from beneath his uniform.

For a second, he hesitated.

He didn’t want to accidentally destroy half the bathroom.

Myles had specifically taught him to control the output though, so he couldn’t falter now.

He aimed at the tiles.

PFFT.

The energy struck, and a section of tile cracked.

Blake immediately fired again.

Crack.

The tile broke apart.

’Ah... that didn’t make too much noise, surprisingly!’

Blake removed the damaged pieces carefully.

Behind them was reinforced material, exactly as Estelle had predicted.

The entrance.

Blake glanced toward the bathroom door.

Then, he briefly deactivated his skill, whispering into the communication device.

"I’m in position."

Alexis responded almost immediately.

"Understood."

Blake nodded.

"Going in."

He activated I’ll Sneak For My Lover again.

He climbed through, then descended the stairs.

The further he went, the colder the air became.

’Can’t say I missed this feeling, to be honest...’

As he was running down, he could hear that familiar, annoying alarm getting louder and louder.

WOOOOOOOOOOOON—

The sound was as deafening as he remembered.

Red emergency lights flashed across the walls.

Doors were opening and closing left and right, while soldiers rushed through the corridors.

One almost brushed his shoulder, but none of them looked at him.

Blake stared.

’Wow.’

Outside, the alarm had been completely inaudible.

The underground facility was obviously designed that way.

Whatever emergency system they’d activated was isolated from the surface.

A soldier ran up the stairs.

Another shouted something into his communication device.

Several others ran toward the deeper sections.

Blake simply walked in the opposite direction.

Nobody stopped him.

Nobody questioned why a YEN soldier was walking calmly through an alarm.

Nobody even seemed to notice that he was there.

Blake smiled faintly.

’Okay... this is really going to be easier than expected.’

The first location that he had to reach was the one he, of course, remembered the most. As such he was heading that way.

First objective was simple, he had to find the archive containing the older first-generation records.

Not necessarily the records themselves.

First, he needed to identify where AL-TECH had moved them.

The newer blueprints had shown several storage sectors.

Tania had narrowed them down to three likely locations, but none were guaranteed.

Blake walked through the corridor.

The facility was enormous.

’Every time I come here... it feels like being in some kind of city. How uncanny.’

Blake passed several observation rooms.

Behind reinforced glass, he could see people. Some were sitting, others were lying down, while many were connected to machines.

’Yeah, this is in the same section as AFE, after all...’

He didn’t stop. He couldn’t, so he continued deeper.

His upgraded skill made it possible to walk past security checkpoints without anyone caring. Last times, they at least asked for the badge.

But now... soldiers were standing directly in front of a restricted door, and Blake was able to walk straight toward them, and enter.

Inside was another corridor, then another checkpoint, then another...

Eventually, he reached a large storage sector.

Ba-dump.

Ba-dump.

Blake put a hand over his heart.

’Finally...’

There were dozens of sealed rooms, each had a designation.

’The first possibility is Storage Sector 5-C...’

Blake walked inside.

Rows of containers filled the room. Some were sealed, while others contained boxes.

He activated his new perception skill.

Let Me See What’s Behind Your Walls, My Darling.

His vision changed.

The walls became partially transparent.

Blake could see structural supports.

Electrical wiring.

Pipes.

Storage compartments.

He slowly scanned the area, but there was nothing.

No significant documents, no human presence or hidden archive.

He moved to the next room, and still, there was nothing.

The third, and of course, there was nothing.

Blake frowned.

’Oh lord... it’s not here either.’

He continued.

A few minutes later, he reached a second storage sector.

This one was much more heavily secured.

The doors were reinforced, with much more cameras, basically everywhere.

He walked through.

Inside were hundreds of containers.

He activated his perception again, but there was nothing.

Then, Blake stopped.

There was something behind one of the walls, a completely sealed room.

He approached. The room wasn’t listed on the visible blueprint.

Blake’s eyes widened.

’This must a secret room that they added later...’

He remembered the map by hearth, and this location wasn’t marked.

’It is worth a try...’

He walked toward the wall.

His perception penetrated it.

Inside were shelves, documents, boxes and several pieces of old equipment.

Blake’s heartbeat accelerated.

’Could it be?’

He basically put his face against the wall, trying to see as clearly as possible.

The documents thrown around weren’t labeled with modern AL-TECH designations.

Some had handwritten codes, others had dates.

Blake’s eyes narrowed.

A date from decades ago was written down. It was one of the earliest periods of AL-TECH’s extraterrestrial research.

"Okay..."

He couldn’t access the room directly, since there was no visible entrance.

He examined the wall, then the floor, then the ceiling...

’Holy shit!’

Blake changed appearance into a child, and entered one of the boxes. Then, he deactivated his skill, and tried to speak as silently as possible.

"Alexis, I found a sealed room that isn’t on the visible blueprint."

"Describe it."

Blake did.

Alexis remained quiet for several seconds.

"Can you access it?"

"Not yet."

"Don’t force anything."

"Okay."

"Mark the location. I’ll compare it with the recovered footage."

Blake nodded.

"Understood."

He activated his skill again and got out of the box.

In his mind, he marked the location, then he moved on.

There was more.

The deeper he went, the older some of the facility seemed.

The modern sections were clean, bright and organized.

The older corridors were different.

The walls were reinforced with older materials, and much narrower. Some signs had been replaced while others had simply been painted over.

Blake walked past one doorway.

The original label was still visible beneath the newer one.

EX-BO— RESTRICTED

Blake stopped, his expression changing.

He looked inside. There was an empty laboratory with old equipment.

Broken glass.

A few machines that appeared to have been abandoned years ago.

He activated his perception.

There was another room behind it.

And another.

The facility had layers.

AL-TECH hadn’t simply built new laboratories.

They had built them over the old ones.

Blake suddenly understood what Tania had meant.

The markings.

The renovations.

The movement of records.

They weren’t dealing with one archive.

They were dealing with decades of AL-TECH history being repeatedly moved around as the facility expanded.

He didn’t like the feeling he got from it.

Even with his skill active, he could hear the distant mechanical noises.

Doors opening.

Machines operating.

Someone shouting.

Then silence.

Blake looked through a window. There were several rooms arranged along the corridor.

He forced himself to keep moving.

He wasn’t here to investigate every prisoner, not yet.

Three storage sectors remained.

He began walking toward the next one. Then, his communication device crackled.

"Blake."

It was Alexis.

Blake immediately stopped, but continued walking, as he poked the device two times, so that Alexis knew he was listening.

"I’ve found something about that room you discovered, on your old blueprints."

Blake’s eyes widened.

"But not as an archive. I theorize that it probably was an original research chamber."

His voice became more serious.

"So, it was used during the earliest human-extraterrestrial compatibility experiments."

Blake’s heartbeat suddenly became much louder.

He looked down the empty corridor.

Then at the sealed room behind him.

His investigation had only just begun.

And already, he’d found something that might be far more important than the files they’d originally come looking for.
