Blake took a deep breath.
’An original research chamber, huh...’
He slowly looked back toward the corridor he’d just walked through.
’Even if it might not have the information they want, maybe it could still reveal some new things, right...’
Blake hid behind a door, momentarily deactivating his skill.
"So... I should stay here?"
"Don’t."
Blake blinked.
"What? But why? Maybe if I investigate more I will find—"
"Don’t talk back.Your stealth isn’t invisibility, the facility itself will notice you eventually. It’s idiotic to stay in one place for too long."
"Okay..."
Blake reactivated his skill and immediately started walking.
’I can’t argue with the first part, but my skill is basically invisibility at this point... the fact that I can’t tell them is frustrating.’
"Keep moving toward the next storage sector, I’ll investigate the chamber remotely."
He walked deeper into Section Five.
The atmosphere gradually changed.
The upper parts of YEN had been surprisingly organized.
Everything was clean, efficient, almost sterile.
The deeper areas felt older.
Some corridors were clearly from a different period, the lights embedded into the ceiling rather than the walls.
The doors were heavier.
The walls were thicker.
And occasionally, Blake could see old AL-TECH markings underneath newer layers of paint.
It was almost like walking through the history of the organization itself.
’This whole system covers the entire country, of course they wouldn’t have the time to make it all brand new...’
Blake reached another intersection.
He stopped, as he saw three directions.
"Take the left corridor."
’Phew, I don’t even need to turn off my skill half the time... his bratty nature does come in handy.’
Blake turned left.
"You’re approaching a storage area. Don’t open anything, as we’re not certain what they stored there."
’Oh.’
Blake immediately became more careful.
He reached the storage area.
There were dozens of sealed containers stacked along the walls.
Some were ordinary metal cases, while others were considerably larger.
A few even had warning symbols.
Blake stared at one.
A strange biological hazard symbol had been printed across its surface.
But since Alexis have him a clear order, he couldn’t do anything but walk past it.
There was something strangely frustrating about being able to access everything but being told not to touch anything.
Still, he had to trust him.
He continued deeper, then he noticed a small door.
Unlike the others, this one had no electronic lock.
Instead, there was a mechanical handle.
Blake stopped. There was nowhere to hide, so he simply crouched down, and deactivated his skill, trying to keep his voice as low as possible.
"I found something weird."
"Describe it."
"It’s a small door with some kind of mechanical handle, and it seems to have no lock—"
"Don’t waste your time, this was your plan to begin with."
Blake sighed as he activated his skill. Regretfully, he stared at the handle.
Several minutes later, Alexis spoke again.
"Wait. Go back to the door."
He walked back.
"Open it. I found the corresponding designation. Temporary archival transfer."
Blake’s eyes widened.
’So the records were moved through here??’
Blake grabbed the handle, slowly opening the door.
The room beyond was extremely small.
There were no shelves or boxes, nothing that resembled an archive. Just an empty room with a metal floor.
Blake frowned, deactivating his skill.
"There’s nothing here."
"There is a way to to open the floor, or so Estelle says. But she’s also not sure how, give her some time."
Blake crouched, then activated his perception ability.
Something was actually underneath.
A narrow compartment.
Blake’s eyes widened. He decided to examine the mechanism.
There was no visible handle, so he simply ran his fingers along the metal.
Then noticed a tiny indentation.
"There seems to be some kind of opening."
"Wait for—"
Blake heard some footsteps, which made him immediately activate the skill again.
Frantically, he pressed it.
Click.
A panel slid open. Inside was a small data module.
Blake stared.
"Why did you move inside? What the hell do you think you’re doing, deliberately ignoring me?!"
Alexis’s voice immediately became sharper.
"Don’t touch anything."
’Tsk, even if I speak, he won’t hear me...’
Blake sighed.
A few seconds passed.
"Hey, what are you waiting for? Tell me what’s inside."
Blake groaned. There seemed to be some soldiers running around.
’Thank goodness I closed the door behind me... but if I speak now, they might hear me.’
"Blake, report back. Blake?"
Blake pressed his lips together, and carefully removed the module.
It was smaller than his palm, and there were no markings.
’I should definitely bring this back.’
Blake slipped it into the hidden compartment of his uniform.
He stood, then paused.
’Wait, maybe this means the files are somewhere nearby?’
Blake’s expression fell.
’I mean, if this is a transfer record, then the module might tell us where something was moved from, or where it was sent... so I need the data.’
He left the room, and saw three soldiers walking toward him.
But none of them looked at him. They walked straight past.
Blake released a breath. He immediately walked away, searching for a safe place to hide in the next storage, and speak.
On the other line, Alexis wasn’t being too gentle with his words.
’Sorry mate, but this really ain’t my fault! Eh, hope he won’t tell Myles about this.’
The next storage sector was significantly larger, fortunately, so he finally got the chance of closing himself inside a locker.
"You son of a—"
"Sorry, there were some soldiers and couldn’t speak."
Alexis grumbled, not seeming in the mood to insult Blake Amy further.
He guided him through several corridors until they reached a section marked with a faded designation.
AS — SUBLEVEL C
Blake looked at it.
’This looks promising.’
He entered.
Rows upon rows of storage cabinets filled the room.
Most were electronic, while some were physical.
Blake walked between them.
His perception ability activated.
He searched for anything containing old documentation.
Most of the cabinets contained recent material.
Medical reports, personnel records, inventory documents, research summaries...
But nothing about the first generations.
Then he saw something, a cabinet near the back.
Its contents were physically stored rather than digitally.
Blake walked toward it.
He opened the drawer.
Inside were old folders. The paper had yellowed, even.
Blake picked one up, but there was no name, only a number.
He opened it.
The first page contained a photograph.
Ba-dump.
Ba-dump.
Ba-dump.
It was a young man.
The photograph had been taken decades ago.
Underneath it was a classification.
SUBJECT: COMPATIBILITY TRIAL 07
Blake turned the page.
There were medical measurements.
Genetic analysis.
Descriptions of physical changes.
Then a note.
Extraterrestrial integration unsuccessful.
Blake swallowed.
’So, this is definitely not related to any of them...’
He opened another. Then another. Then dozens. None of these showed a single surviving person.
Blake’s fingers tightened around the folder.
"Alexis, I found the files but... for now, they seem to be only for failed subjects."
For a few seconds, the other line was silent.
"How many?"
"More that a dozen..."
"Can you identify their dates?"
"Yes."
"Names?"
"Well, not always...? If basically not at all."
He continued searching.
There were records from different years.
Different experiments.
Different alien samples that he immediately put in his pocket for later, to make them to take a look.
The earliest files were almost impossible to read.
Some had been damaged, others had sections deliberately removed.
But the later files were more detailed.
Blake found something interesting.
A series of folders all connected to one particular experiment.
’What the... this extraterrestrial genetic sample has been tested on more than... at least two hundred people!’
They all failed, but finally Blake read, for the first time, the word survived.
Blake stared at the final report, which was nameless.
Subject displayed stable integration.
But he didn’t need a name, that face was more than enough.
He swallowed.
"Alexis. I think I finally found something related to one of you..."
Blake read the report.
"Copy the designation."
After doing so, he began scanning the folders with the device Estelle had provided.
One after another.
Dates.
Subject numbers.
Research classifications.
Experiment names.
Transfer destinations.
He didn’t have time to read everything.
But he could preserve enough information to analyze later.
Then, a new sound echoed through the corridor.
Footsteps, many of them.
Blake froze.
"There are eight soldiers approaching."
Blake glanced toward the entrance.
’I mean, who cares, my skill is still active anyway...’
"There’s someone else with them. But I don’t know who."
Blake slowly closed the drawer.
’What the? Could it be a second generation?’
Blake immediately moved away from the cabinet.
The soldiers entered, and walked past him.
"What the... where are you now? How are you avoiding them? Or are you about to engage in a fight?"
Blake held his breath as he immediately walked towards the door. Outside, the last person was just standing there.
Ba-dump.
Ba-dump.
The man wasn’t wearing the uniform, but a dark coat and a hat that was covering half his face, looking ordinary compared to just... anyone inside the underground system.
Until Blake noticed the way the soldiers behaved around him.
They weren’t treating him like a superior officer.
They were afraid of him.
Blake’s danger sense activated, a warning pulsing through his body.
The man stopped, which made him freeze on the spot.
’Did my skill fail? But how? No, no, let’s calm down, that’s not possible unless he is a second generation with perception better than Myles...’
The man slowly looked around the room. His head passed over Blake, but nothing happened, he continued walking.
He exhaled silently.
The man walked directly toward the cabinet where he had been searching.
He couldn’t lose his time, so he walked away.
"Contact Captain Caine."
Blake stopped for a second.
’Captain Caine? That man I saw at AFE...?’
Nonetheless, he started to walk again, until he reached the corridor. Then turned the corner.
Only once he was far enough away did he finally breathe.
"Someone came to check the archive."
"I know that, but how did they not see you?"
"I just managed to talk myself out of it."
