Chapter 99: Chapter 99: Wild Man
A troubled look flashed in Claire Kendall’s eyes, and she bit her lip.
"That’s not what I mean. I just don’t know how to tell my mom. You were just at our house yesterday, and now today we’re married. She’ll never be able to accept it."
Miles Warren’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Fine. Then what do you suggest we do?"
Claire stood on her tiptoes, rubbing against his arm ingratiatingly as she pleaded in a soft voice.
"I’m going to need a little favor from Dr. Warren for this~"
「Vista Gardens.」
The door opened. Shirley Kendall froze for a moment when she saw the two of them. "Claire? Why are you back with Dr. Warren?"
Claire’s tone was casual. "I ran into him when I went to the hospital to pick up my treatment forms."
She shot him a meaningful look, her fingertip poking the small of his back.
Miles Warren began reciting his lines with a deadpan, robotic expression. "Ma’am, sorry to intrude. There’s a subsidy fund at the hospital for uremia treatment. You meet the application requirements, and we’ll need your household registration book to verify your information."
He recited the lines Claire had given him with a perfectly straight face. His profession as a doctor made the story especially convincing.
The moment Shirley Kendall heard about a subsidy, she immediately went into the bedroom, found the household registration book, and shoved it into Claire’s hands.
"Here, take it, take it. Claire, you go handle it. I can’t believe we had to trouble Dr. Warren to make a trip for this."
Seeing her mother’s completely trusting expression, Claire felt a pang of guilt. She forced a sweet, obedient smile. "I know, Mom."
Once they were back in the car downstairs, Claire slowly let out a breath of relief.
Miles started the car, glancing at her out of the corner of his eye. His voice was tinged with sarcasm and displeasure.
"Heh. You really are a natural-born liar. A true master of the craft."
Claire didn’t shy away from his gaze, instead winking slyly.
"Well, I won’t lie to *you*. From now on, whether it’s the truth, a lie, or sweet nothings, I’ll only say them to Dr. Warren."
"Liar." Miles’s face was cold as he started the car.
At the Civil Affairs Bureau, Miles parked the car.
He rested one hand on the steering wheel and suddenly spoke. "Claire Kendall, once we go in, there’s no turning back."
Her hand paused on the door handle. She turned her head to meet his bottomless, dark eyes.
"And if I said I’m not going in right now, would you agree?"
"I won’t." The two words were utterly decisive.
Claire’s red lips curved into a smirk, her voice dropping. "I wasn’t thinking about backing out when I was on top of you."
The Civil Affairs Bureau wasn’t crowded. The two of them sat down at a window.
The staff member took their IDs and household registration book, entered the information, and handed them two forms. As a matter of procedure, they asked, "Is this marriage voluntary?"
Claire, a little excited, nodded enthusiastically. "Yes."
Miles nodded silently.
"Do you have photos? If not, you can get them taken over there." The staff member pointed around the corner.
They got in line. The corridor was narrow, and people jostled back and forth. Claire was pushed and nearly bumped into the wall.
She pressed her lips together, trying to make conversation. "There are quite a few people waiting for photos. We should have gotten them done outside."
Miles glanced down at her, then discreetly took a step to her side, shielding her from the crowd.
When Claire saw he wasn’t responding, she mumbled to herself, trying to fill the silence. "Next time. It’ll be better next time."
"Heh..." Miles, who had been silent the whole time, let out a soft scoff.
The air around them suddenly dropped a few degrees.
After taking the photos and completing the paperwork, the two of them left the Civil Affairs Bureau.
Claire opened the marriage certificate and stared at the photo on it, feeling a sense of disbelief.
’She and Miles Warren were married, just like that.’
The little red book was suddenly snatched from her hand. Miles, expressionless, put both marriage certificates into his pocket.
"Hey, one of those is clearly mine." Claire clung to his arm. "Dr. Warren, haven’t you heard that you’re supposed to keep important documents on you at all times?"
Hearing her words, Miles paused, his tone feigning nonchalance. "You’re too scatterbrained. I’ll hold onto them for safekeeping."
"Also, when are you moving back in?"
Claire thought for a moment. "Let’s not move just yet. If I suddenly move out, my mom will get suspicious."
Miles’s gaze grew colder. "When do you plan on telling her?"
"I just need a transitional period. It’ll be soon."
"Heh. It had better be."
Claire got into the passenger seat and suddenly felt an itch all over, especially on her chest.
She was embarrassed, but she couldn’t stand it. She glanced at Miles, saw that he was focused on driving, and quickly reached into her shirt to scratch.
But the more she scratched, the itchier it got. She turned to her side, squirming in her seat.
The car stopped at a red light. Miles grabbed her wrist, turning her to face him completely.
"Claire Kendall, what’s wrong with you..."
His words died in his throat.
A few buttons on Claire’s white blouse were undone, half-exposing the rise and fall of her chest. A large red rash had broken out across her fair skin.
She instinctively covered herself with her hand, her face burning hot.
Miles’s eyes darkened for a moment, then his brow furrowed. "You’re having an allergic reaction. What did you take?"
Claire thought back, her eyes darting away. "I took some medicine."
"What medicine?"
"It was... birth control."
The air in the car fell silent for a moment.
Miles’s jaw tightened, his voice laced with anger. "Claire Kendall, you’ve really outdone yourself."
"It’s not like we didn’t use a condom. What are you worried about?"
She mumbled, "You... it was too many times..."
Miles didn’t say anything else. He silently turned the steering wheel, changing direction.
"Are you angry? Where are we going?"
He replied coldly, "The hospital."
"We don’t have to, do we? It might get better on its own in a little while." Claire felt her neck starting to itch too.
Miles ignored her, his expression grim. Claire didn’t dare say anything more and just went along with his plan.
「A nearby private hospital.」
Miles registered her at the emergency room and took her to get checked. The results came back: it was indeed an allergic reaction to birth control pills.
"Sit here. I’m going to get the prescription filled." He turned to handle the paperwork.
Claire waited quietly. ’My body is so weird,’ she thought. ’Who knew you could even be allergic to birth control pills?’
A shrill female voice came from above her.
"Claire Kendall? All alone at the hospital?"
Joanne Sutton stopped in front of her, clad in high heels. Her eyes immediately fell on the key information on the report in Claire’s hand.
"’Married’? ’Allergic to birth control pills’?" Joanne deliberately raised her voice to mock her.
At the last class reunion, Claire had caused her to break up with her sugar daddy, leaving her in a rough spot for quite some time.
She laughed out loud. "Claire Kendall, after offending Miles Warren, were you that desperate to just find some random man to marry? Making you take birth control pills until you have an allergic reaction... looks like he doesn’t take you very seriously either."
"What goes around comes around. This is all you’ll ever amount to. You really deserve this!"
Claire gave her a cold look and quirked her lips into a sneer.
"What’s it to you? If you have so much energy, you should worry more about yourself. Try to replace all those fakes you’re wearing with the real thing sooner rather than later."
"You...!" Joanne’s sore spot had been hit. Just as she was about to curse her out, Miles returned and stood right beside Claire.
Joanne froze.
’Claire’s disgraceful actions at the anniversary celebration caused such a huge scandal, everyone was talking about it. Why is he still with this woman?’
"Mr. Warren, don’t let this woman deceive you! She’s already married to some stray dog. She’s just using you as an ATM."
