The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 110: Henry SterlingChapter 110: Chapter 110: Henry Sterling
Finn Pierce hadn’t expected Leon Sterling to actually dare to make a move, but he couldn’t exactly kick him out of the base, either. Right now, Finn genuinely felt that it would be much more satisfying to just let the guy go to the battlefield. Spending all day getting a massive headache from the baffling antics of these people was exhausting.
As Leon crashed to the ground, the entire scene fell silent for a moment. Looking as though he had been badly spooked, Jack Palmer shot Finn a questioning glance. Both men simply let Leon lie there on the freezing ground, gasping heavily for air.
Watching him, Lynn Shelby let out a scoffing laugh. "That’s it? And here I thought he actually had some real skills."
Just as he spoke, a military off-road vehicle pulled up to the villa’s entrance. Finn looked over and saw that Larry Wright had finally brought Professor Henry Sterling.
"Professor Sterling, I’m sorry to trouble you again," Finn said, his expression returning to its usual calmness.
Henry Sterling?
The name sounded somewhat familiar.
Luna Dawson and the others fixed their gazes on the newcomer. He was an elderly, lean man wearing a pair of glasses. Neatly dressed, he actually looked like a decent, normal person.
The man was none other than Leon’s father, Henry Sterling.
He hadn’t been working at the research institute for very long, having barely just gotten acquainted with his colleagues, when Larry frantically sought him out to tell him that his son had caused trouble outside yet again.
Upon hearing the news, Henry’s temples throbbed with anger. He didn’t even have time to take off his white lab coat before hurriedly following Larry to handle the mess.
With the apocalypse looming, the base had only dispatched a heavily armed squad deep into the city to rescue his family of four because they valued his scientific research capabilities. Now, with resources stretched to the absolute limit, he absolutely could not let his son mess things up at such a critical juncture and cut off their family’s only means of survival.
Seeing his father arrive, Leon immediately began to complain, "Dad!"
Before he could finish, Henry slapped him directly across the face!
Looking completely incredulous, Leon glared angrily at his father with bloodshot eyes and screamed defensively, "You hit me?! Did you not see that your son was almost strangled to death?!"
"It’s my fault for not having the time to discipline you, and your mother’s fault for spoiling you too much! You just demanded a car, then a gun, and now you dare to try and rob someone else’s villa!? If you cause trouble one more time, don’t blame me for being ruthless!" Henry reprimanded him sharply, his face full of disappointment.
Hearing this, Leon glared viciously at everyone present. His eyes seemed to spit fire, completely unbothered to hide his deep resentment. He scrambled up from the ground in a panic, stumbled his way into the military off-road vehicle, and slammed the door shut with a loud bang.
Henry let out a heavy breath of foul air and turned to Finn. "I am truly sorry. We’ve only been here for a week, and he’s already caused you so much trouble. Next time this rebellious son acts up, please just have someone tie him up and send him back. I’ll deal with him when I get off work."
The crowd couldn’t help but sigh inwardly at how the apple had fallen so far from the tree.
Luna had always respected scientific researchers, and she held onto the fervent hope that they would soon develop a vaccine against the zombies.
In the current apocalypse, ordinary people would almost certainly turn into zombies after being scratched or bitten. Only a minuscule fraction of people managed to awaken superpowers, and the odds of that happening were so low they were practically negligible.
Furthermore, with the frantic evolution of flora and fauna and their increasingly robust reproductive capabilities, humanity would truly face extinction if things continued this way.
Even though superpower users possessed a certain degree of immunity to ordinary zombie scratches, mutating was still a foregone conclusion if they were infected with too much zombie toxin or faced the level suppression of high-level zombies.
Finn first gave Henry a slight nod, his tone apologetic. "I also bear some responsibility for this. I failed to handle the situation properly and in a timely manner, which is why we had to trouble you to make this trip." After speaking, he turned to Luna and her group, introducing them solemnly, "This is Luna Dawson, one of the dual-superpower users at our base, along with her family."
He then turned back to Luna and the others to make the introduction. "This is Professor Henry Sterling, a renowned scholar in our country’s genetics field. He is currently one of the key scientific researchers working on the zombie vaccine and is under the base’s strict protection."
Without waiting for anyone to speak, Henry took a step forward, his face full of self-blame as he apologized, "I am truly sorry, everyone. It’s my failure in raising my son that has caused you all such trouble."
Looking at the silver-haired father bowing to apologize on behalf of his unfilial son, Luna couldn’t help but feel a twinge of envy. Some people truly didn’t realize how blessed they were.
Suddenly, a flash of recognition hit her. Henry Sterling!
Wasn’t this the very same Dr. Sterling who had developed the Crystal Core Replenishing Fluid in her previous life?
No wonder the name sounded so familiar!
This man was an absolute treasure!
She quickly stepped aside to avoid accepting his bow and hurried to help him up. As a younger person, she couldn’t accept such a gesture from an elder. She responded in a gentle tone, "You’re being too polite, Professor Sterling. It’s quite alright. My family members do have somewhat short tempers as well. As long as this doesn’t happen again next time, we’re fine."
"I will definitely discipline him properly when I return," Henry said sincerely.
Finn signaled for Jack to bring over a military greatcoat, which he draped over the professor’s shoulders. "Professor Sterling, you should head back first. It’s too cold out here."
Henry nodded slightly, waved goodbye to everyone present, and slowly paced his way into the vehicle.
Afterward, he had Larry bring over a five-kilogram vacuum-sealed bag of rice and two bags of white sugar, saying that Professor Sterling had instructed him to offer them as an apology.
Larry also complained to Miles Dawson about plenty of Leon’s petty, trashy antics. Once he felt refreshed from venting and prepared to return to headquarters, Mrs. Dawson shoved a handful of candies into his pockets before letting him leave.
Everyone couldn’t help but lament the situation. Professor Sterling was such a good man, yet his son had turned out so rotten. Having to constantly clean up his son’s messes while being so busy with work was truly unfortunate.
"Remember to wear a mask when you go out from now on," Kevin Keane said, his tone carrying a hint of overbearing bossiness.
Miles heard this and agreed, "That fat bastard’s eyes practically lit up the moment he saw you come out."
"That look in his eyes was absolutely disgusting."
Aaron Palmer’s anger had yet to dissipate; it had been a long time since anyone had dared to act so arrogantly in front of him.
Luna recalled the incident and figured they were right. "Alright, I’ll be careful from now on."
Miles gritted his teeth. "If it wasn’t frowned upon to fight inside the base, I would’ve crippled him long before you even came outside."
Luna affectionately pinched Miles’s cheek. "Okay, okay. My brother is the best!"
"Is everything handled out there? If it’s handled, get over here and help make steamed buns!"
As soon as the group stepped into the house, Mrs. Dawson began issuing orders.
It was then that everyone noticed Little Sweet Potato sprawled across the dining table, its dozens of vines moving so fast they were a blur as it folded dumplings...
What an outstanding little worker potato!
Wayne Dawson looked at everyone and laid out the division of labor. "Little Sweet Potato is in charge of the dumplings. The rest of us are responsible for the steamed buns. No slacking off, any of you!"
"Yes, sir!"
"Copy that!"
"Understood, bosses."
The group began to banter playfully once again.
Rhonda Dawson, who never liked noise to begin with, hadn’t gone outside at all. She had simply stayed indoors, quietly mixing the bun filling. Since Miles and Aaron hadn’t stopped chattering away since they walked in, everyone already knew exactly what had happened out there anyway.
For the rest of the afternoon, the family steamed thousands of buns and thousands of dumplings. It was truly a massive undertaking.
The scent of the freshly steamed large meat buns made Rollo drool so much that he scarfed down a dozen of them in one go!
"We can’t feed Rollo too much. He’s getting a bit too fat."
Luna sat on the sofa, rubbing her bare feet affectionately against Rollo’s furry belly.
"How can I not feed him? My heart just melts when he looks at me with those puppy-dog eyes," Rhonda sighed. Was she just too soft-hearted?
Blake Blue nodded in strong agreement. "I don’t know why, but I feel like Rollo and Little Tiger have gotten even cuter over the past few days."
He had always been rather observant. The expressions and gazes of the two little creatures seemed much more lively and intelligent than before.
