The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 111: Containment ZoneChapter 111: Chapter 111: Containment Zone
Luna Dawson’s mouth twitched. That spirit spring water was indeed effective.
Miles Dawson washed his hands in the bathroom and called out, "Sis, Brother Leo and I are taking Rollo to play with Tina later! Get a set of his clothes and shoes out!"
"No need. Do you have any idea how thick their fur is?! A little exposure to the elements is exactly what they need. No clothes!" Luna leaned lazily against the sofa, reaching for the peeled pomelo Kevin Keane handed her. As she chewed on the third segment, she asked in a muffled voice, "How have Nancy Sullivan and Tina been doing these past couple of days? Any signs of them joining a squad?"
Aaron Palmer immediately spilled the gossip. "I heard Shane Shaw joined the official Superpower User squad, and it seems Nancy wants to join too."
Luna was surprised. "Would Shane let her go? Isn’t he the ultimate overprotective brother?"
Miles wiped his hands, grabbing some seafood from the fridge. He looked up at Luna and said, "Nancy’s spatial superpower is in high demand, you know. A lot of squads have invited her. Her brother advanced to the Second Order yesterday."
Luna instructed, "Alright, if you see Shane, ask him about the situation in the Eighth District. If the higher-ups really decide not to bomb it, we’ll find time to go in and look for Third-tier Zombies."
The two nodded and dashed off with Rollo to hang out at the Sullivans’.
Kensington Base currently offered a semblance of safety. The perimeter was secured by a ten-kilometer safety buffer zone, blasted out using heavy artillery.
Kensington Base covered a vast area and was divided into nine districts for management. However, its internal control was still limited, with only the First to Seventh Districts completely liberated.
The area spanning the Eighth District to the Ninth District—over a hundred square kilometers—was still the territory of zombies and mutated plants and animals. That area used to be adjacent to downtown Kensington, densely packed with commercial districts, hospitals, schools, office buildings, and high-rise residential complexes. Now, countless zombies and mutated flora and fauna hid within them.
Of course, being close to the city center meant supplies were also incredibly abundant there.
Before the apocalypse, the major army groups stationed around Kensington had originally been deployed in separate sectors, handling both defense and emergency support. They were well-organized and equipped for joint-force operations, serving as Kensington’s core defense force.
But the catastrophe struck suddenly, and the virus spread with terrifying speed. The troops scattered across various defense zones couldn’t regroup in time. Communications were cut off, equipment suffered severe wear and tear, and some were even caught up in internal conflicts—all while trying to rescue survivors in their jurisdictions and transport supplies!
Many had either tragically mutated in the early stages of the outbreak or sacrificed their lives during successive rescue and supply missions...
After all this struggle, the country had still lost a significant amount of its combat power, barely managing to stumble its way into establishing a basic administrative framework for Kensington Base.
Had it not been for a massive conscription drive just before the apocalypse, there wouldn’t be nearly enough manpower for post-disaster reconstruction and survivor rescue efforts today.
It was now early April, and Kensington Base already housed over half a million survivors. Many people from surrounding cities were also braving the dangers to rush here, just seeking a safe place to settle down.
To accelerate the base’s expansion and solidify the foundation for survival, the authorities had recently issued a notice: they would strive to liberate all areas of the base before the dry season arrived.
The notice explicitly called upon all capable survivors to participate in the clearing missions within the walls. Furthermore, all supplies found within the Eighth and Ninth Districts, along with any Crystal Cores harvested from kills, would belong entirely to the participants. This was to incentivize everyone to weather the crisis together and actively hone their post-apocalyptic survival skills.
At the Sullivan Villa.
Miles went up with some frozen seafood and rang the doorbell. Seeing Rollo’s freezing little paws lifting one after another, Aaron’s heart ached, and he scooped the 110-pound fat dog into his arms.
The two men and one dog entered the courtyard. Shane opened the villa’s front door with dripping wet hair, looking as if he had just been blow-drying it a second ago.
Since he had just taken a shower, his cheeks held a faint flush. He had a prominent nose bridge, cleanly defined lips, and a smooth, gentle jawline, exuding a clean, refreshing sense of lethargy.
Despite the freezing weather outside, he was dressed only in a loose, off-white knit sweater. The collar was slightly open, and the sleeves were casually rolled up to his forearms, revealing well-proportioned wrists.
The warm, damp steam carried the faint, fresh scent of his body wash outside, contrasting sharply with the biting cold wind and emphasizing a cozy, domestic warmth and gentleness.
Seeing the two of them, he asked familiarly, "Come on in, head to the small living room. There’s floor heating there. Why didn’t Blake Blue come over?"
The two of them had sparred and exchanged tips on the use of superpowers a couple of days ago, which had been immensely rewarding and helped him break through to the Second Order. With little going on at the squad today, he had actually been planning to head over and practice with him.
"Brother Ian is teaching Hector how to do his homework," Miles said. "He said you have to start them young, and you can’t just stop studying because it’s the apocalypse."
Shivering, Miles shoved over ten pounds of seafood into Shane’s hands.
Shane’s mouth twitched slightly. No wonder his sister commented that Blake Blue had strong "househusband" vibes—he was actually still babysitting during the apocalypse...
Hearing Rollo panting, Tina bounded joyfully down from the second floor. With a WHOOSH, she was right next to Rollo. The two happily circled each other, sniffing, and before long, they scampered off to play.
Not long after, Nancy came skipping down the stairs from the second floor like a lively little rabbit.
She wore a fuzzy, pink rabbit-themed loungewear set. The two soft bunny ears on her hood bounced gently with her movements, making her look exceptionally playful.
The young girl’s eyes curved sweetly with a slight upward tilt at the outer corners, and when she smiled, they seemed to hold the starlight. Her eyelashes were long and thick. Despite having such an obedient, soft, and adorable appearance, she possessed an incredibly lively and energetic personality.
"I’m so bored. With my brother not home, it’s just me guarding an empty house all day long," Nancy complained with a pout, her face full of innocent charm.
The group walked to the small living room used for guests and took a seat on the sofas. Nancy served everyone freshly brewed floral tea, while Shane went to put away the large box of seafood. When he returned, he immediately began lecturing his sister in an incredibly paternal tone.
"Where would you leave Tina? The reason I won’t let you join a squad is to protect you."
Leaning back against the sofa, Shane teased them with a hearty invitation to stay for dinner. "Since you brought seafood, why don’t you stay for hotpot tonight?"
"No need, we just brought Rollo over to see his best doggy friend. Uncle Verne is probably already starting on dinner at home anyway," Miles replied. He took a sip of the floral tea and bit into a small cookie from the table with a loud CRUNCH.
Aaron looked at Shane and cut to the chase. "Has your squad been to the Eighth District yet? Or do you only go outside the walls to rescue survivors?"
Shane raised an eyebrow. "I knew it. You guys are definitely planning to go to the Eighth District. My squad has been there once; we scavenged a small supermarket. It’s similar to outside the walls, except the main rules are that you can’t use heavy artillery with large blast radiuses, and you have to try to preserve the buildings as much as possible. After all, building materials will be in short supply later on."
"I want to go too! I’m dying of boredom at home. My brother only ever calls me to the squad meeting room to store supplies. I’m practically treated like a literal tool," Nancy complained, wrinkling her nose and angrily crushing the cookie in her hand.
Shane frowned slightly, looking at Nancy. "Nancy, I’ve only just advanced to the Second Order. If something happens to me, at least the family still has you..."
Hearing this, Miles and Aaron also sighed softly. In the apocalypse, no one knew how long anyone would live.
