Chapter 117: Chapter 117: Recruitment

She secretly fumed. Ron Rivers had procured plenty of top-tier skincare products for her, and she took meticulous care of her appearance. With her smooth skin and rosy complexion, how could she possibly look as old as some middle-aged auntie?!

Luna Dawson took off her goggles and looked at her calmly.

The people in this squad were overwhelmingly attractive! Susan Vaughn opened her mouth in shock. A myriad of thoughts raced through her mind, but she couldn’t find the words to retort. "You! You’re bullying me! Do you have any idea who I am?!"

Everyone frowned at her words, wondering if there was something wrong with her head.

Miles Dawson spoke up in annoyance. "Are you sick in the head? You were the one who approached us first, and now you’re claiming we bullied you?"

"I have Chief Rivers backing me! I’m his son’s girlfriend!" Susan’s eyes filled with smugness, as if she had finally regained the upper hand.

Luna and her group had just accepted Stan Stone’s mission, otherwise, they might have actually believed her. Luna’s eyes curved into a smile. "Oh? So you’re that moron Ron Rivers’ moronic girlfriend?"

"PFFT!"

"HAHAHA!"

The group burst into unbridled laughter.

After parking his car, Ken Vance had gone to the registration gate to observe the superpower users wanting to enter the Eighth District. He had just been having a very agreeable conversation with a few people when he glanced over and wondered why a crowd had gathered around his parking spot. As soon as he walked over to check, he heard those exact words. He immediately stepped forward, grabbing Susan’s hand, and glared at the group accusingly. "What do you think you’re doing?!"

Lynn Shelby suppressed his anger and spoke coldly. "What are we doing? Ask her! She stopped us and talked for ages without ever getting to the point. Did she even graduate from elementary school? Her communication skills are atrocious!"

Aaron Palmer added, "And her eyes keep twitching!"

Ken frowned and pulled Susan behind him. Luna looked at Ken’s face. Wasn’t this the captain of the Thunderflame Squad who had accompanied Susan to the Southen Base in her previous life? She stared knowingly at their tightly clasped hands. It seemed that in her past life, Ron must have already died by this point, and this Ken was the backup option she had found.

Susan spoke to Ken in a vulnerable tone. "I just wanted to recruit some people. I only want to get revenge for Ron, but they don’t look like they’re willing to lend a helping hand!" As she spoke, her eyes turned red.

He gritted his teeth and explained in a deep voice, "Hello, I’m a Second Order Thunder System superpower user. My name is Ken Vance. Susan just wants to form our own squad with me. She was hoping to recruit some superpower users today and probably saw that you all possess impressive strength. She meant no harm."

"Oh? There’s no need for recruitment. I’ve already accepted the mission to rescue Ron Rivers. Do you want to go together with us?" Luna suddenly changed her tune, revealing a very sincere smile.

"Are you... telling the truth?" Susan’s eyes lit up as she looked at the group.

Ken sensed the superpowers of the group and realized that, aside from the two wearing black winter suits, he couldn’t detect the superpower levels of the others! One would only be unable to detect another person’s superpower level if they were either an ordinary person or a High-level superpower user superior to oneself!

"Susan, wait. We can’t be reckless about this," Ken warned. He knew full well that these people were not to be trifled with. Since they had accepted Stan Stone’s mission, their strength must not be underestimated. They had just shown hostility toward Susan, which likely meant they belonged to Raymond Rivers’ faction. Raymond was a deeply scheming man who had never approved of Susan. If the two of them entered the Containment Zone with this group, they might never actually make it back alive!

Susan hadn’t considered any of this; she was entirely captivated by the good looks of Lynn and the others. She shook Ken’s hand, pressing tightly against his arm and intentionally or unintentionally rubbing her chest against him.

Luna quickly clipped a mini camera to her collar to snap some footage, planning to give Ron a grand gift later. Things were getting chaotic, which made it all the more exciting!

Susan clung tightly to Ken and urged, "Every extra minute Ron spends in the Ninth District is another minute of danger!"

However, Ken remained cautious. He knew at a glance that he wouldn’t be able to keep these people in check. If they went in and were stabbed in the back, they wouldn’t even have a chance to cry about it. He immediately turned his head, wanting to warn Susan. But Ken wasn’t very tall, and because Susan was clinging so tightly to him with her head resting on his shoulder, when he turned around, his lips planted directly onto her forehead.

Both Susan and Ken froze. The sudden soft touch of his lips caught them both off guard, leaving them rigid in place, their breathing hitching for half a beat. Neither of them had expected such an accident to happen right in front of everyone’s eyes.

Only Luna, who was standing at the perfect angle in front of them to watch and film, had a swift gleam of slyness flash through her eyes. She thought, "Well, well, they’re already kissing! Good thing I reacted fast enough to capture it!"

Meanwhile, Susan and Ken reacted as if they had been burned, spacing out for a few seconds before hastily pulling away from each other.

Miles jeered and stirred the pot. "Oh? Aren’t you Young Master Rivers’ girlfriend? Why are you kissing another man?!"

Aaron eagerly joined in on the gossip. "Holy crap! Cuckolding Young Master Rivers right in public!"

His voice was so loud and clear that the people waiting in line nearby for their teammates to register all looked over. Many of them had just witnessed the group arguing and were now murmuring among themselves. After all, in this apocalyptic world without electricity or internet, everyone loved to hear gossip about the base’s leadership. Especially since the rumor of Susan abandoning Chief Rivers’ son to flee for her own life had spread everywhere over the past two days. Now, the main character of that very rumor was right in front of them. The surrounding superpower users and stationed soldiers eagerly ate up the drama, staring at Susan and Ken with expressions that said they were ready for a good show.

"You! You’re all speaking nonsense!" Susan finally snapped out of her daze. Tears spilled from her eyes, PATTER PATTER, and she ran off crying toward the car.

Luna let out a disdainful chuckle. It looked like she wouldn’t be able to trick Susan into entering the Eighth District today. "She’s too ashamed to show her face anymore. Let’s head into the Containment Zone ourselves."

Ken stood stunned for a moment, awkwardly avoiding the gazes of the people around him. Gritting his teeth, he got into the car, shut the door, and fled the scene all in one smooth motion. Seeing that the main characters of the drama had run away, the onlookers discussed the incident for a few more moments before dispersing with loud laughter.

Luna and her group also gathered themselves, got into their car, and set off. She glanced at a water cup on the stone table and swiftly stored it into her spatial dimension.

Miles scratched his head. "So she’s the mission target’s girlfriend! We finally got to see her in person! I need to figure out a way to expose their illicit affair and broadcast it to everyone!"

Luna sighed. What a pity. She should have controlled her temper just now and tricked Susan into entering the Containment Zone. It was a miscalculation on her part.

Nancy Sullivan’s eyes were brimming with a love for gossip. "No wonder she was able to completely bewitch Ron Rivers. She definitely doesn’t look like someone to be trifled with."

Luna leaned back in her seat. Her voice was slow and leisurely, yet carried an unquestionable certainty. "Susan. Her name is Susan Vaughn."

"Susan Vaughn?!" Evan Olson and Miles jerked their heads up with a SWISH, exclaiming in unison. A terrifying murderous intent instantly surged in their eyes. The atmospheric pressure around them plummeted, making the air in the car feel as if it had somewhat solidified.

Luna nodded calmly, her expression serene. The others, who had been sitting back casually, instantly froze. Everyone exchanged glances, their faces filled with bewilderment. What was the deal with this Susan Vaughn? Why did Luna, Evan, and Miles have such an intense reaction just from hearing her name?

Kevin Keane furrowed his brows slightly. He shot a thoughtful glance at Luna and asked straightforwardly, "Do you want to kill her?"

"Yes," Luna replied crisply and cleanly. A second later, the corners of her lips suddenly curled up. Smiling as beautifully as a blooming flower, she spoke in a tone as relaxed as if she were discussing what to have for dinner. "I just don’t like the look of her, so I want to kill her."

Lynn smiled and said, "Alright, whatever the boss says goes."

Evan chimed in, "As long as she’s in the Kensington Base, it’ll be easy to handle!"

"Yeah!"
