The Apocalypse Took Everything, This Time I Hoard It All First
Chapter 132: Stirring Up TroubleChapter 132: Chapter 132: Stirring Up Trouble
At the dining table, Lynn Shelby hooked his finger and deftly snatched the perfect cabbage leaf from Aaron Palmer’s hand. He then leisurely swiped two large chicken cutlets from Kevin Keane’s bowl, stuffing them into his mouth and chewing with a loud CRUNCH.
"Aren’t you guys curious about that Susan Vaughn? Since yesterday, she’s been playing the great philanthropist at the entrance of the Eighth District, handing out porridge to gather fans like some kind of celebrity," he said, chewing his food with a nonchalant tone. However, he secretly glanced at Kevin out of the corner of his eye.
"No one is fighting you for it," Kevin said, raising an eyebrow with a hint of disgust. "Even if you eat more, you won’t bulk up."
Lynn let out a low chuckle and deliberately waved the chicken cutlet over his bowl. "This is called being lean. Unlike you, covered in muscle—so hard it hurts the hands just bumping into you."
"Who wants to fight over your crappy chicken cutlet? Only you think it’s a delicacy," Kevin replied. He sounded disgusted, but his eyes were glued to the meat.
Seeing this, the smile in Lynn’s eyes deepened. He deliberately offered the cutlet toward Kevin, only to yank it back abruptly. This ignited their competitive spirits. The two men’s chopsticks clashed back and forth across the dining table, sending the chicken cutlet flying.
Wayne Dawson massaged his forehead and sighed. He picked up his chopsticks and caught the flying chicken cutlet with a sharp THWACK, snapping it in half. He placed one half in each of their bowls. "How old are you two, still fighting over food?"
With an elder intervening, the two childish men finally settled down.
Luna Dawson’s mouth was stuffed full. Eating together with the whole family made the food taste so much better. She nodded vaguely. "Mhm... well, okay. Let’s make another trip to the Containment Zone and see what Susan is up to while we’re at it."
Upon hearing that name, Mrs. Dawson’s brows knitted tightly together. "Luna, we’re inside the base after all. She..."
Luna knew her mother’s concerns and quickly comforted her. "Mom, I’m definitely going to take care of her. I know we can’t make a move inside the base, so don’t worry. She has to leave the base eventually. I can wait."
Everyone knew that Luna’s entire family harbored a deadly grudge against Susan, but they tacitly refrained from asking too many questions. They shared the same goal and stood united.
Hector clutched a large rice wrap, his cheeks puffing out like a little hamster. He finally swallowed it down, raising his little hand and shouting, "Aunt Luna, Aunt Luna, are you going out again? Take me with you!"
Luna smiled and poked his chubby little cheek. "Next time, okay? Next time we leave the base for a mission, I’ll definitely take you along to kill zombies. For now, you need to practice your superpower properly with Grandpa."
Hector pouted, looking aggrieved. "Okay, fine. But you have to keep your word! No taking it back!"
Grandpa Wayne chimed in with a smile. "That’s right, Hector, you practice with Grandpa. Once we’ve mastered our plant superpower, the whole family will go out together next time, and you can be our little vanguard!"
Wayne leaned over, his face full of pride. "Absolutely! My grandson is amazing now. He can control mutated vines that are dozens of meters tall—even better than me!"
Hector was instantly floating on air from the praise. He patted his chest and shouted, "I’m going to kill the fiercest zombies in the future and protect the whole family!"
The whole table burst into laughter. They ate with even more enthusiasm, wishing they could finish their meal immediately and rush out to stir up some trouble.
Looking at her passionate family, Luna smiled and waved her hand. "Alright, once we’re full, we’ll head out!"
Luna hadn’t expected Shane Shaw and Nancy Sullivan to want to join their impromptu trip to the Containment Zone. Their last joint expedition had been quite fruitful, so they couldn’t resist tagging along to hunt for more loot. Luna was more than happy to have everyone along. Rollo could even play with Tina.
Everyone piled into the off-road vehicle and soon arrived at the entrance of the Eighth District. A glance ahead revealed a dense, dark crowd of people—at least a thousand, double the number from a few days ago.
Aaron stuck his head out and clicked his tongue. "Damn, so many people? Looks like everyone wants to go in and scavenge for supplies!"
"What did you expect? It’s the freezing apocalypse. How do you survive without supplies?" Lynn curled his lips. "I heard that after the cleanup operations over the past few days, the number of zombies on the outskirts has dropped significantly. Who wouldn’t want to try their luck?"
Luna leaned against the car window, toying with a pair of binoculars. A sly gleam flashed through her eyes. "Chief Rivers already despises Susan. He probably only let her exploit this loophole because he dotes on his son too much. Today, we’ll add fuel to the fire and ruin her completely, making sure she never even touches the threshold of the Ford Family."
Nancy leaned closer, her face full of curiosity. "Luna, tell me quickly, what are you planning to do?"
Luna gave a mysterious smile. "Don’t rush. Just wait and see!"
The group waited patiently for over half an hour. Finally, they saw an off-road vehicle pull up outside the reception room. Three or four people stepped out. Susan was wearing a white down jacket, pretending to be delicate and fragile. Luna recognized her at a glance.
Before long, Susan brought out a large pot of porridge, set up a stall next to the reception room, and began to distribute it with feigned sincerity.
Lynn leaned against the car window and tapped the glass with his fingertip. "What a phony. Simply put, she just wants to curry favor with Chief Rivers and recruit Superpower Users. She’s desperate to become Ron Rivers’s little wife." He glanced at Kevin. "How long do you think she can keep up this act?"
Kevin’s lips curled up. "Whenever she runs out of rice is when she’ll stop."
Luna smiled and looked at everyone. "She’ll probably have to stop today."
With that, she put on a mask, a hat, and sunglasses, bundling herself up tightly before pushing the car door open. "You guys wait in the car."
She slipped into the crowd and heard Susan speaking softly to the people in line. "Everyone is having a hard time. My personal capabilities are limited, but I prepared some pork bone porridge. I hope it can help you all."
Ken Vance and a few of his lackeys were maintaining order nearby. The crowd instantly erupted into a chorus of praise.
"This lady is so beautiful and kind-hearted!"
"To think someone actually cares enough to bring us warmth!"
Susan’s smile grew even more tender. She continued to speak while distributing the porridge. "Eat up quickly, everyone. It’s cold out, and it will get chilly soon. My name is Susan Vaughn. Our Thunderflame Squad falls under Young Master Rivers of the Sixth District. We are currently recruiting Superpower Users. Everyone is welcome to sign up! Follow us, and I guarantee you’ll have food to eat! There’s enough for everyone who sees this, so come line up and help us spread the word."
She certainly needed them to spread the word. That way, her reputation for being kind, generous, and loyal would quickly spread throughout the base.
A few Superpower Users immediately rushed forward. "Miss Vaughn, I’ll sign up!"
"Following Miss Vaughn definitely means a good life!"
Seeing this good deed of free porridge, some ordinary people swarmed over to join the line, only to be subtly shoved away by the members of the Thunderflame Squad. Miss Vaughn had already made it clear: the organization was getting Superpower Users to line up so they could recruit them into the squad. As for the ordinary people, they were just there for show and should be given as little as possible, or none at all. The Thunderflame Squad’s supply reserves couldn’t afford to be wasted on such charity.
A burly member of the Thunderflame Squad pushed three or four ordinary people out of the line with a single shove. "The porridge is for Superpower Users! If you don’t have a superpower, get lost!"
A tall, ordinary survivor stiffened his neck and argued. "She literally said there’s enough for everyone who sees it and asked us to help spread the word. Why can’t we get any?"
The others began to mutter as well, their dissatisfaction beginning to surface.
"Get lost! Get lost!"
"We’ll distribute it however we want!"
The Thunderflame members didn’t bother wasting their breath on them, merely maintaining order beside the line.
Luna watched from the sidelines, feeling utterly disgusted. She scanned her surroundings and saw that most of the people were silently drinking their porridge, too afraid to speak up. There were also many ordinary people who hadn’t received any porridge, their faces looking grim.
She quietly slipped to the side and found five or six half-grown children around eleven or twelve years old. They were waiting around for odd jobs, hoping to earn some supplies to help their families.
Luna shoved two large meat buns into each of their hands. "Go over to where they’re handing out porridge and shout two things. Say, ’Do us ordinary people not deserve to live?’ and ’Do we have to starve if we don’t join Thunderflame?’. Once you’re done shouting, come back here, and each of you will get two more self-heating hotpots."
The children’s eyes instantly lit up. They hastily stuffed the meat buns into their coats and nodded repeatedly. "You got it! You got it!"
In the next second, the children rushed into the crowd and yelled at the top of their lungs. "Do us ordinary people not deserve to live?!"
"Do we have to starve to death if we don’t join Thunderflame?!"
The moment those words were spoken, the crowd instantly exploded in an uproar!
