"Sir, his mother isn’t sick, and Mr. Jones isn’t at his home."

Vincent stood motionless in the middle of the street.

For several seconds, he simply stared ahead, unable to process the information.

If Bryce had lied about his mother being sick, then he had asked for the money earlier because he had already decided he wasn’t going back.

He had needed the money at that particular moment because he had been planning to leave as soon as the meeting at the hotel was over.

It was painfully obvious now.

Vincent couldn’t believe he had failed to recognize the lie when Bryce had told him his mother was sick.

He stopped searching aimlessly through the streets. There was no point continuing to release his pheromones when Bryce could already be at the airport, or perhaps even sitting inside an airplane by now.

He turned around and headed back toward his car.

It was just ten in the morning. If he gathered enough people to search for Bryce, there was still a chance they could find him before evening.

"Kyle, are you still there?" he asked, pressing the phone back against his ear.

"Yes, sir."

"Find ten more people. Reliable people. I need you to find Mr. Jones. You know how to do it, so search everywhere. Check the airports and find out whether there’s any record of him boarding a flight.

"Pay particular attention to Alverton, but that doesn’t mean you should pay less attention to the other towns. Search thoroughly through every city and town, even the countryside."

"Yes, sir."

"It’s urgent."

"Got it."

Vincent ended the call as he reached his car. He exhaled heavily and rubbed his temples, which were throbbing more violently by the second.

He wanted to drive straight back to the house, make one final check, and then return to Genovia, but something inside him resisted leaving Alverton.

He drove to the nearest airport, but there was no record of Bryce having been there.

At last, Vincent drove back to the house, and the moment he stepped inside, the reality he had been trying to avoid became undeniable.

Bryce was gone.

He locked the house before getting back into the car, intending to return to Genovia. He would check the Sinclairs himself, even though he was almost certain Bryce wouldn’t have gone there.

As Vincent drove, his thoughts raced in every direction.

Perhaps Bryce had never felt anything for him at all.

Maybe he had never intended to remain with him, even after finally breaking away from Dave.

Bryce loved Dave.

The thought struck Vincent with such force that his control nearly slipped, and for a terrifying second, the car veered dangerously across the road before he corrected it.

His grip tightened around the steering wheel.

He couldn’t think about that.

He had to stop thinking about it.

But the harder he tried, the more relentlessly the thought returned.

Eventually, he reached his house in Genovia, remembering that he had left someone there.

The events of the previous night returned to him briefly. He had seen something coming from Leah that had looked disturbingly similar to dark magic, but he didn’t care about that now.

He didn’t even understand why he had come back to the house when he should have been out there, searching for Bryce.

He pushed open the damaged door, which still hadn’t been repaired, and immediately noticed a note lying on the table.

He walked toward it and picked it up.

He recognized Leah’s handwriting immediately.

-I’m leaving. I don’t think there’s anything left between us anymore.

It sickens me to think that I ever allowed myself to become involved with someone like you, Vincent.

Aren’t you ashamed of yourself at all? How can you even bring yourself to touch another man sexually, then turn around and disguise yourself as morally upright when there is absolutely nothing upright about you?

You’re a loser, Vincent Walker. Your younger brother would have been better than you. At least he’s ambitious, and when he wants something, he goes after it despite the dangers. You, on the other hand, run from the things you should be pursuing.

I don’t even know what I ever saw in you. You’re full of promises you never keep. I can’t believe I trusted you in the first place.

I can’t believe I believed you would finally take the throne that belongs to us, only for you to leave it to your younger brother because you’re afraid of him.

Your loser nature must be the reason the Moon Goddess gave you a loser mate, just like yourself. A man who can’t give you anything, and yet you still have the audacity to go after him.

I’m not a loser like you, and I refuse to stay with you anymore, so you’re free to be with your useless mate, since apparently that’s who you’re compatible with.

As for me, I’ll do what I have to do and rise above the position I was meant to have.

Damn you for wasting my time.

I’m going to tell everyone back home what you’ve become and what you’re busy doing here in your stupid human world.

Let them know exactly what kind of person you’ve turned into. Perhaps then they’ll hate you even more than they already do.’

Vincent stood there, staring at the note, unable to fully comprehend some of the things Leah had written.

Her departure bothered him, but not because he wanted her to stay or because he still had any desire to keep her in his life.

What unsettled him was the realization that there were things about her he had never truly understood, things he should have noticed, and now she had simply disappeared before he could make sense of them.

He needed to know what kind of person he had been living with all this time.

Another part of the note that had struck somewhere deeper was being called a loser, a runner.

Vincent hated those words.

A loser who left the throne to his younger brother.

That didn’t make him a loser.

He didn’t care about the throne, or the wolf world, so why should refusing to fight for something he didn’t even want make him a loser?

The only thing he had wanted and still run from was what he had begun to feel for Bryce. Those feelings weren’t simply the result of the bond.

Everything about Bryce had attracted him from the moment he found him, and after he slept with him, that attraction became unbearable.

But instead of admitting what he was feeling, he had forced Bryce to confess feelings that probably weren’t even there, and had even rejected him when he already knew it was the last thing he truly wanted to do.

He hadn’t wanted to accept that he was falling in love with a man. Now Leah had taken that fear and spoken of it as though it were something disgusting, threatening to shake a part of him that was still new, still vulnerable, and had barely begun to take root.

His phone vibrated in his hand, startling him out of his thoughts.

He looked at the screen and saw Kyle’s name.

He answered hesitantly.

"Sir, I’ve already found people. They’re on the move."

Vincent remained silent.

"Uh..." Kyle added cautiously. "What should we do about your wife’s video? It’s already spreading very quickly. Should I find people to take it down?"

Vincent’s brows drew together.

"What video?"

His heart seemed to stop for a second. He had absolutely no idea what Kyle was talking about.
