The Exiled Alpha's Human Male Mate.[BL]

Chapter 81: The Baby Needs Father’s Pheromones.

There were too many questions to choose from, yet when Bryce finally had the opportunity to ask them, his mind became so overwhelmed by where to begin that for several seconds, he could only stare at the woman.

"How do you know me?" he finally asked, some part of him already dreaded whatever answer might come.

"Have you found out about your parents yet?" the woman asked.

"No, and I don’t want to," Bryce cut in before she could say anything more, the words coming out far more sharply than he intended.

His entire body had tightened at the mention of them. He didn’t want to know who they were or where they were.

Most of all, he didn’t want to discover that they were somewhere out there living ordinary, happy lives without ever looking back at the child they had abandoned.

That possibility frightened him more than the idea of never knowing them.

"My question was how you know I’m pregnant, how you know I’m carrying a wolf baby, and how you know about me and Vincent," he added, "I wasn’t asking where I came from."

The woman fell silent, watching him with an expression of surprise that she couldn’t quite hide.

Bryce wondered if he had caught her off guard. Perhaps she had expected him to desperately want answers about his parents.

"Okay," the woman answered. "Let me introduce myself first. My name is Agatha, and I am a werewolf. I believe you’ve already found out about us. I am their healer, and sometimes I communicate directly with the Moon Goddess when she wants something passed on to her people."

"You’re saying that, in this world, you communicate directly with your God?" Bryce asked, unable to hide his disbelief. For a moment, it sounded almost impossible, even though practically everything that had happened to him lately had been impossible.

"It’s Goddess," Agatha corrected, "And yes. Not everyone can. Mostly her chosen. I communicate with her directly, and she has chosen you to replace me as I grow older. She has chosen you to take over..."

"I don’t want to go there."

The words escaped Bryce before he could stop them, his discomfort sharped as he tried to make sense of what she was suggesting. "Whatever that place is, I’ve never belonged there, and I definitely don’t want to belong there, especially if my parents belong there. I don’t know anything about it, so how can I give whatever services she expects from me?"

"Stop talking carelessly," Agatha warned, cutting through his protest before he could continue. "Don’t act or speak on impulse unless you want to be among everyone else who is about to face severe wrath for being thoughtless, ungrateful, and heartless."

"What do you mean?"

"The Moon Goddess’s blessing, and being chosen by her, is the most precious thing you could ever receive in your entire life, and you should be grateful for it. Just because you don’t know anything about your real home doesn’t mean you reject her gift. I’m here for the same reason, to guide you through all of it."

Bryce sighed and turned away, his patience thinning beneath the weight of everything she was telling him. "I have a lot on my mind right now. I’m pregnant while I’m a man; I can’t even think straight. How am I supposed to go through all that? How will I even give birth to the baby? And the last thing I need right now is more things being thrown at me that are only going to drive me insane. I..."

"I told you, I’m here for you. For the baby and everything else. I’ll make sure you’re safe and that the baby is born safely. This pregnancy has a significan..."

"I’m not complaining about the baby," Bryce interrupted, turning back toward her. "I’m not saying the baby is bad. Not even for a second have I thought that I hated it, but don’t you think I should at least have been consulted about it? About some of the things I’m being asked to do?"

"I told you not to speak carelessly. The Moon Goddess herself saved you when you were barely a day old. You were left alone in the woods, and she used someone to find you and take you to the children’s home in this human world.

She saved you for this very reason.

She created you, and she would do whatever she wants with you, but she would never give you anything you don’t deserve.

In this case, she is giving you everything you deserve. You have far more power and privilege than you realize. You’re not simply like me, a healer whom werewolves depend on whenever severe sickness attacks them, or someone who communicates with the Moon Goddess.

You are far more powerful than I have ever been. You were discarded by your own mother because she believed a mere omega didn’t deserve to call her mother, and that same omega is going to rise above even the Alphas."

Bryce bit his lip, fighting desperately against the tears suddenly gathering in his eyes. He had specifically asked her not to speak about his parents, and she had done exactly that anyway.

He knew now that he wasn’t merely indifferent to everything concerning them. He feared what the truth would do to him, the possibility of having the reality of being unwanted ripped open and forced into the light.

It was the one vulnerable part of himself he had spent years avoiding, protecting it with everything he had, and Agatha had reached straight into it despite his warning, touching the wound he had never allowed even himself to touch.

"I’m sorry. I won’t mention anything about your parents again," Agatha said, her voice softening when she noticed Bryce’s reaction and the tears gathering in his eyes. "I’ll only answer your questions."

She took a moment before continuing softly. "I know all of this is overwhelming, but you need to know.

The wolf world is in complete chaos right now. People are doing things that are considered madness, and no one is listening to anything meant to guide them. Even the leaders have lost themselves, committing acts that are worse than those of the people beneath them, and you are the one to end all that chaos and madness."

Bryce said nothing, and Agatha continued.

"Almost everyone is about to face the Moon Goddess’s wrath. Even Alpha Vincent has wronged her."

Bryce’s attention sharpened at the name.

"The Moon Goddess chose Vincent to be your mate because, among all the Alphas and Alpha heirs, he was an exception. He was supposed to be the one who would take over the wolf world. He was meant to find you so the two of you could work together for what she had chosen you to accomplish."

Agatha paused, allowing the words to settle before adding, "But after he met Leah, he lost his way."

Bryce’s brow tightened.

"Even though he was manipulated in some ways, he was still supposed to do better. Instead, he challenged the Moon Goddess herself. Then, after the bond between the two of you formed, he ended it."

Bryce’s breath caught faintly.

"And when he later realized that the bond wasn’t the only reason he wanted to be close to you, he didn’t tell you the truth. He manipulated you. He lied about why you were still feeling that pull toward him."

Bryce went still.

Too much information came at once, leaving him unsure what to process first.

A few moments ago, he had been ready to ask Agatha to leave because there was nothing proving that anything she said was true. Now, however, one detail had cut through all his doubts, because it was true.

Vincent had ended the bond.

Bryce had still felt the pull afterward. He remembered how confused it had made him, how Vincent had insisted that the reason he continued feeling drawn to him was because he had feelings for him.

Bryce’s fingers curled tightly as the realization sank deeper, dragging every memory of manipulation back to the surface. From Dave.

And now Vincent too?

His lungs seemed to lock for a moment, making it difficult to draw a proper breath as anger, disbelief, and betrayal tightened painfully inside his chest.

"What did he lie about?" he asked, forcing the question through his constricted breathing as he fought to keep his emotions under control.

"The reason you still felt the pull toward him was because the bond was never completely severed. If he had truly wanted to end it, he would have told you to reject him as well. That would have ended the bond completely."

Bryce shut his eyes, inhaling deeply as his fingers worked over his throbbing temples.

All this time, he hadn’t even decided whether he wanted Vincent or whether he could ever consider being with him. He had been caught between uncertainty and the feelings he couldn’t explain, never allowing himself to make a final choice.

Now, for the first time, he didn’t hesitate.

The answer came to him with startling clarity.

"How does someone end the bond?"

"If you end the bond completely right now, understand that you can never reclaim it."

Bryce’s breath caught.

For the briefest moment, doubt pushed its way through his anger, forcing him to consider what he was about to give up. He shoved the thought aside almost immediately.

"How am I supposed to do it?" he asked again, his voice caught somewhere between certainty and doubt.

"You can’t end the bond right now. The baby needs his pheromones, and they won’t be as strong toward you without the bond. Once you give birth, if you still don’t want to be with him, you can reject him. The Moon Goddess will be more than willing to give you another mate."

Bryce stared at her blankly.

For a moment, he felt as though he might actually scream. There was too much happening at once, too many things he didn’t understand, and every answer Agatha gave seemed to lead directly into another problem.

He couldn’t even comprehend how he had gone from trying to confirm whether his baby was safe to all this.

He dragged in another slow breath, trying to force his thoughts into some kind of order.

"Why am I even pregnant?" he asked, "Is there a specific reason?"

Perhaps that was where he needed to start.

Maybe if he understood why he was carrying a baby in the first place, everything else might finally begin to make sense.
