Hundreds of portals grew to over a thousand of them, and the news began to spread rapidly.
The Legendary Artifact that had spawned here, the thing that everyone had come with their top Elders ready to fight over, was a crafted item that generated an artificial dungeon.
A fully functional artificial dungeon.
The thought of such a thing even being possible was enough to blow the minds of most of the Clan Leaders. They had fought for territory for centuries, defended every square metre for the potential resources that it could provide. And someone managed to just create an item that would generate a full dungeon on their territory?
If they could do that, did it even matter what territory they held? They could bring their own resource production with them, and have the System just give them more every time that they made a trip through the dungeon.
It was insane.
It shouldn’t be allowed, it had to violate at least a half dozen laws of nature for the System to do something like that.
But there it was, standing in front of them, clearly listed as a dungeon entrance at the base of the tower. That System tag couldn’t be faked, and couldn’t be forged. Their only hope was that it was some sort of cheap knockoff, perhaps a single boss fight that would give minimal rewards.
If that was the case, it wouldn’t be so bad.
But if it was a full dungeon with quality rewards and extractable resources, how were they supposed to just accept this?
Their only consolation was that the Darklight Host would only ever have one. Nobody had ever heard of duplicate Legendary items. And they were absolutely right about that. Even if they made another item exactly like this, the System would spit out slightly different parameters and a different name.
Though, the tower was not actually a Legendary Grade item, but a Peerless Grade, Legendary Rank item. The difference was both subtle and immense. You could have weaker Legendary Grade items, but only a Legendary Rank item would handle a dungeon full of Supremes.
Karl pondered the reason for the naming overlap, and then realized that it was the dragons to blame.
Legendary Grade and Legendary Rank were different words in draconic, but the same in the common tongue. So, while the dragons knew exactly what they were discussing, anyone using most other languages had to guess by context.
Even in Serpent, they were the same word.
"Who wants to go first? I’m willing to guide a team through, and take the role of tank," a burly dragon kin man announced, snapping everyone out of their plotting.
"Five or ten?" Someone called back.
That was the question. The dungeon said that you could do either. But finding ten Supreme Ranked individuals that could work together was not easy.
"Make it five. You want to heal today, or are you on damage?"
"Depends on who we get. If we get a cleric, I’ll go damage."
There was a bit of hesitation, then two identical women stepped forward.
"We will join you for this run, but if you even think about grabbing my ass again, I will leave you dead in the dungeon."
"Perfect. Now, we just need one more, healing or damage."
That made the others laugh, and Oak stepped forward. "Since it’s the first run of the first day, I will volunteer to go with you instead of my own team. I’m a Shaman, but I’ve got a full set of healing skills, and I’m a Green Dragon, so I get a bonus to it.
Now, if we’re all ready, let’s see how my new toy works, okay?"
That would also give the Darklight Host unbiased information about the inside of the dungeon in the five-person mode.
Karl cleared his throat. "Wait, before you enter, you should pick a difficulty. You don’t want to be fighting about that inside, and I believe it’s going to ask."
"Right. Easy mode first? Or do we want to kick it up a notch and see what the next setting gives us?"
The other four frowned at each other.
They all knew the other Clan Leaders, but they didn’t particularly trust them. However, if the local was healing, then she likely wouldn’t deliberately let them all die at the last moment.
It would look bad for the Guild.
"Let’s try the second setting, whatever it calls it. Normal, setting two, you get the point," the dragon kin Paladin who was going to tank for them declared.
"Got it, setting two it is. Now, let’s get going so we can get the research data."
They headed inside, and Lord Almeixei came to talk to Karl.
"Did you not test this before you placed it?"
"You saw the spectacle, right? There was no time after it was activated to send a team in to test it. We will send a set of Spirit Immortals in a few minutes, though. That will give us a reference at the lower end as well as the higher end.
I see that everyone brought Elders, expecting a fight for the resource, but this isn’t something that can be collected and moved, so there’s not much incentive for anyone to fight over it." Karl explained.
That made the Sect Leader chuckle.
There were still plenty of good reasons to fight over it. But nobody was brave enough to fight the Darklight Host for their city. Two Guild Wars in, and they had already made enough of a name for themselves that nobody wanted that fight.
Not even the Valalan League, whose Elders and Alliance Leaders had just arrived, looking a little haggard and rushed.
"Alliance Leaders, welcome back. Sorry to disturb you on such short notice. Though, I’m a bit surprised that you noticed the disturbance at all. Your territory is quite some distance from here," Karl greeted them.
"We have a member at the Inn. He was sent to pick up a clothing order at the Silk Emporium, but the custom orders take some time," the Alliance Leader explained.
Karl nodded. It usually took about a week for Rae to get to a larger custom order.
But for people who annoyed her, it could be a couple of weeks, and that gave the Alliance’s errand boy plenty of time to remain in town under the pretence of waiting for his order to be ready.
"Well, nothing to do but wait, unless we’ve got more teams to go in."
The Alliance Leader raised a hand, and a large group of Elders rushed forward.
"Take ten and go into the dungeon. Any difficulty that you like, see what it gives as a reward. Today is free entry, and I strongly suspect that Lady Rue Gathuzan will not be amenable to giving us a discount on future visits."
He wasn’t wrong about that.
But there was no need for them to give anyone a discount to enter the dungeon. The rewards that the Darklight Host members expected the participants to extract from the dungeon were more than enough to cover a standard entry fee.
They wouldn’t gouge the entrants, and they wouldn’t unduly restrict who could enter. But there was no need for them to offer discounts.
Except to the New Home members, of course.
That alliance was close enough that they would allow entry for a single Clan Credit per member, which would be a net profit for everyone who entered, as they could sell what they didn’t need to the Warehouse for more than that.
