The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 198 - 113: Assassinating the Saintess

"You say that like you’ve been there before." The young man rolled his eyes. "The Void Technique Space isn’t called the Void Technique Space anymore."

The Church Court’s raid on the Hall of Truth wasn’t just in the real world, but on the spiritual plane as well.

The moment the Holy Sanctuary was attacked by the Church, the Void Technique Space was also assaulted.

With Blake away, no one could stop the Pope. It was a complete rout. In the end, not only were the Hall of Truth and Kovri City in the Real World reduced to ruins, but the Void Technique Space was also occupied by the Church Court and renamed False Heaven.

A deeply ironic name.

In short, the Void Technique Space had become the Church Court’s territory. The gate that once existed within the spiritual world of every Wizard was forcibly closed. Besides the Church Court itself, no one could find the entrance to False Heaven. And even if you did, you’d be better off not going. If you get killed in the spiritual world, you’ll be injured in the real world, too—you might even end up in a vegetative state.

There was no need to risk your life for something you knew was impossible.

But the more Sean listened, the more something felt wrong. His brow furrowed.

On one hand, he could sense the young Wizard was telling the truth; the man had no reason to lie to him.

On the other hand, ’If the Void Technique Space has already been occupied by the Church Court and turned into False Heaven, then what’s the Void Technique Space that Elvire and I have been visiting?’

’I haven’t seen anyone from the Church Court there, have I?’

"Alright, I’ve gotta run. I need to get ready for a mission." The young man extended a friendly hand to Sean. "My name’s Kerlando. What about you, newbie?"

"Sean."

"That’s an easy name to remember."

The young man shook Sean’s hand and smiled. "Let’s talk again if we get the chance. See you around."

Kerlando left the church, leaving Sean alone before the statue, completely baffled.

Sean had thought that after gaining a deeper understanding of the New World, many of his questions would become simpler. He never expected that the more he learned, the more complicated things would get. At first, it was just a matter of two worlds—the New World and the Real World. Now... great. There was another, new Void Technique Space to deal with.

He really couldn’t figure it out.

’Even if the New World’s timeline is chaotic and the Church Court only *used* to occupy the Void Technique Space, the fact they occupied it at all means the current Void Technique Space should still be ruled by them. That’s how it is in the Real World—I can’t think of any power other than the Church Court behind the Witch Hunter Families. So why does the Church Court call the shots in the Real World, but not in the Void Technique Space?’

It was very weird.

’Could it be that the New World isn’t the Consciousness Riverbed?’

’Or maybe it *is* the Consciousness Riverbed, just not in the way Sopea thought, where everything corresponds to the Real World. Maybe it’s merely a spiritual world constructed from the histories of various timelines?’

"...Forget it. I should just find a mission and get out of here for now."

Sean rubbed his temples, a headache coming on.

He felt like his brain was a little overloaded.

’If I hadn’t come to the New World through that method of ’returning to reality,’ I would have assumed this world was fictional. Anything can happen in a fictional world; there’s no need to get to the bottom of it. But since I *did* come here this way, I can’t help but overthink it. When I can’t figure something out, I’ll just set it aside for now and look for more clues and details.’

Sean shook the obsessive thoughts from his mind and began to check the missions in the crystal balls one by one.

The missions could generally be divided into three categories. The first type required fighting, like intercepting a certain family’s supplies on a transport route.

The second type involved going to places like the Winterless Sea and the Silent Forest to fish and hunt for Alchemy Materials.

The third type seemed the simplest, mostly involving finding a specific item.

This reminded Sean of the analogy he’d made to Elvire: the New World was like a game, and the three types of missions corresponded to PvP, PvE, and PVX, respectively.

Some missions also had party size requirements.

However, you couldn’t see who had accepted the mission; the Crystal Ball’s projection only displayed a number. Once the quota was met, the Crystal Ball would disappear and reappear on the desk of Gomez or another person in charge. They would then arrange a time for the team to assemble and set out.

Out of curiosity, Sean made a point to check the blood-red crystal in the very center.

’The human eye is very sensitive to the color of blood; it naturally inspires caution. In Mysticism, "blood-red" usually represents something taboo. Here, it must mean the mission is extremely difficult—potentially fatal.’

Sean was wrong.

The difficulty wasn’t just "very high"; it was absurdly, even mind-bogglingly, high.

The mission in the blood-red crystal, unbelievably, was to assassinate the Church Saintess...

’It even specified that the Saintess resides year-round in Hesinra Palace in the Elderidge Holy City, the Church Court’s heavily guarded main headquarters... Isn’t that a complete suicide mission?’

"Hey, bro, you interested in the Saintess too?" a young guy asked, leaning closer.

Sean: "..."

He didn’t know what to say.

’Logically, after so many years, there must have been countless new Saintesses. It shouldn’t have anything to do with me anymore. And yet, seeing the word "Saintess" still stirred something in my heart. After all, even a brief intimacy leaves a lasting bond. It hadn’t even been a hundred days since that dream of mine, and the memory was still a little... nostalgic.’

Sean had looked at dozens of crystals, and this was the only one that named a specific person to be killed. It was less a mission and more a bounty, just like how the Florist Family had put a warrant out for him. You wouldn’t do something like this without a deep-seated hatred.

"What on earth did the Saintess do to make the higher-ups want to assassinate her?" Sean asked.

"What else could it be?" the young man replied. "It’s obviously because she framed Lord Blake."

Soon after the Sanctuary of Truth was destroyed, history was maliciously rewritten. The Church Court used every trick in the book to subvert the legend of Carl Black. At the time, however, this propaganda wasn’t widely spread. Perhaps they felt it needed time to take root, or perhaps even the Church Court felt it was being too shameless. In any case, they didn’t go around publicly slandering Mr. Blake’s image.

It wasn’t until the reigns of the previous and current Saintesses in recent years that they inserted these fabrications into textbooks and vigorously pushed for educational reform. It could be said that without these two generations of Saintesses fanning the flames from behind the scenes, Mr. Blake would not have become the universally reviled scoundrel he is today.

At least, not so quickly.

To the Holy Sanctuary, slandering Mr. Blake was a crime punishable by death.

And since history is written by the victors, the only way to clear Mr. Blake’s name was to kill this victor.

"I’d advise you all to just give up on it."

A Wizard to the side said, "This isn’t something we can handle. Especially you, newbie."

A Saintess is a Saintess not just because she’s the Pope’s daughter, but also because she possesses terrifyingly immense power.

Throughout the history of the Church Court, every Saintess without exception has been a Tier Ten Grand Mage. An enemy like that, even outside of Hesinra Palace and without guards, is not an opponent they were capable of defeating.

Some might say, "How will you know if you don’t try?"

"Since the higher-ups issued this mission, it must mean there’s a chance of success. Otherwise, wouldn’t they just be sending everyone to their deaths?"

And so, over the past few years, plenty of brave souls had teamed up to take the mission, storming Hesinra Palace by night.

And the result?

Not a single one was ever heard from again.

This was from his personal experience.

He once had a friend.

Before leaving, his friend told his girlfriend that once he finished this job, he’d have money, and they could get married on the spot.

And then, he no longer had that friend.

He didn’t know if his friend was dead or alive. It’s been three years, and there hasn’t been a single word from him since.

And that friend of his was a Tier Six, just one step away from becoming a Grand Mage, hailed as one of the most brilliant young Wizards in Blake City. If he couldn’t do it, what chance did a weak-looking guy like Sean have?

Sean really didn’t like hearing that.

’I know a Forbidden Spell, you know.’

’A Forbidden Spell might not be enough to bridge the gap between a Tier Three and a Grand Mage, but I can afford to die!’

Originally, Sean had planned to take that statue mission and just muddle through, but now he’d changed his mind.

’So what if she’s the Saintess?’

’I could even bring the First Saintess to heel. Why would I be afraid of this one?’

Sean smacked the Crystal Ball—WHAP!

’I’ll take this mission!’
