Kave: "..."
’For some reason, my face stings a little.’
Even Elise, who had been lost in the joy of reuniting with her sister, was amused by his strange antics. Smiling through her tears, she said, "You guys can stop trying. Lady Catherine isn’t interested in men."
She glanced at Sean and added, "And being handsome won’t help, either."
Sean: "..."
’The girl seems to have gotten the wrong idea.’
But he couldn’t be bothered to explain.
Tony, ever the gossip, pried, "What do you mean? Is she into women?"
Elise quickly said, "I didn’t say that! Don’t get the wrong idea, and don’t let your imagination run wild. Lady Catherine probably just has high standards. After all, she’s the Guard Officer here and the commander of the Knight Order—one of the Saintess’s most trusted Personal Guards. In terms of rank, she’s practically a Countess. She definitely wouldn’t give an ordinary person a second glance."
’Catherine, Guard Officer...’
Sean mused, "So this is Pi City?"
Elise: "Huh?"
’What’s Pi City?’
Sean said without expression, "Nothing."
’She didn’t get the reference. This girl’s no fun.’
"Come on, let’s go sit and talk." Having apparently had her fill of hugging, Eleanor finally brought herself to let go of her sister. She wiped the tearstains from both their faces and walked over, holding Elise’s hand.
Elise, still blushing a little from her tears, said shyly, "I’ve never heard of any Pi City, but I’m sure you’ve all heard of this place."
Everyone: "Hm?"
Elise sat on a stool, took a sip of the water her sister handed her, and said, "This is False Heaven."
Tony’s eyes shot wide. "Wha?"
’False Heaven?!’
"Wait, wasn’t False Heaven occupied by the Church Court... Oh, right. Shit!" As he spoke, Johnson suddenly realized and slapped himself on the forehead. ’Aren’t we on Church Court turf right now?’
"No, that’s not right either. Hold on!"
Sean was the most bewildered of them all. "This isn’t a question of whose territory it is," he stated flatly.
"As far as I know, False Heaven is the name the Church Court gave the Void Technique Space after they occupied it. The Void Technique Space is a Spiritual Domain, so... are we in an imaginary world right now?"
’My head was already a mess. I can’t tell what’s real and what’s fake. I still haven’t figured out my previous questions, and now there’s one more. What the hell is this Consciousness Riverbed? Why is it one layer inside another, like a nesting doll?’
"Wrong, wrong," Elise said, waving her hands dismissively. "The False Heaven you’re talking about is *that* False Heaven, not *this* False Heaven."
Sean: "..."
’Which one is *that* one?’
’And which one is *this* one?’
Eleanor didn’t understand either. She gave her sister’s hand a little squeeze. "Take your time and explain clearly. We’re not in a rush."
Elise seemed to realize she had been too vague and gave an awkward smile. "What I’m trying to say is that the current False Heaven, like the old Void Technique Space, exists in both the Spiritual Domain and the Real World."
In other words, after the Church Court destroyed Kovri—the Void Technique Space in the Real World—they built a new False Heaven somewhere else.
"So that’s how it is." Kave heaved a long sigh of relief.
’Seriously, Sean’s question had given him a real scare. If someone told him they were in a fake Void Technique Space while their real bodies were locked in a dungeon by the Saintess, he would’ve been utterly miserable.’
Sean more or less understood what the girl meant. ’This is another Kovri.’
But while he understood, he couldn’t make sense of it.
"If they wanted a city like this, why did they destroy Kovri in the first place?"
’The Church Court was supposed to be after me and the Hall of Truth. They could have just wiped out the Holy Sanctuary. The city itself still belonged to them. Why go to all this unnecessary trouble?’
’It’s not just time-consuming and laborious, it practically invites ridicule. They claim the Holy Sanctuary is Paganism and its people are Heretics, but in the end, aren’t they just copying us?’
"No, no, no, wrong again."
Elise corrected him. "The Church Court is the Church Court, and the Saintess is the Saintess. The one who destroyed Kovri was the Pope. But False Heaven—this city we’re in now—was built by the Saintess."
Before Sean could even speak, Tony was already lost. "Whoa, hold on a minute... Are you saying the Church Court and the Saintess aren’t on the same side? That they’re doing their own things?"
’Does that even make sense?’
"I know it sounds unbelievable, but it’s the truth," Elise explained earnestly. "I only found out about all this after I arrived here."
The way she and her teammates had come to False Heaven was no different from how Sean’s group arrived now—they were all "brought" here by the Saintess.
After waking up, she saw many familiar faces. They were all the "missing persons" from Blake City.
Everyone thought they were dead, but they weren’t.
They had just moved to a new place to live.
"You all might not know this, but you do, Sis," Elise said to Eleanor. "The mission I took was to assassinate the Saintess."
Eleanor’s eyes were already large and beautiful, but they widened even more as she glared at the younger girl. "And you have the nerve to bring that up!"
"Daring to take on a mission like that... Did you have a death wish?"
"Oh, come on, Sis, don’t be mad." Elise tugged at her arm, batting her eyelashes. "Look, I’m perfectly fine, aren’t I?"
Eleanor huffed. "That’s only because you got lucky."
This time, Elise didn’t argue. She just nodded. "I really was lucky."
She paused for a moment before continuing. "At the time, I figured that since the higher-ups in Blake City were issuing the mission, and this generation’s Saintess was young, around our age... I thought Her Highness Diana was probably Tier Six, or at most a newly-minted Grand Mage who wasn’t yet familiar with Forbidden Magic. I thought we had a chance to kill her."
"It wasn’t until I was brought to False Heaven and met Her Highness the Saintess in person that I realized a thousand of me wouldn’t be enough to last a second against her. The only reason I’m not dead is because of her mercy."
"Back then, she was already Tier Ten."
Everyone: "???"
"Tier Ten??"
’Holy shit!’
Kave’s scalp went numb with dread.
’What were we here to do again?’
’Assassinate a Tier Ten?!’
Tony: "Are you serious?"
Elise: "Of course. You’ll understand when you get a chance to meet the Saintess."
Johnson and Ryan sucked in a sharp breath.
’Damn it, bad intel gets you killed!’
’If we’d known the Saintess was Tier Ten, we would’ve had to be out of our minds to take this job.’
’What good is a huge bounty if you’re not alive to spend it?!’
But something sounded off to Sean. He asked suspiciously, "The way you keep saying ’Her Highness the Saintess’... why do I get the feeling you’ve switched sides?"
"I have not!" Elise’s brows shot up, and she said indignantly, "Her Highness the Saintess has always been one of us!"
"I mean, have you never wondered how our very own Blake City was built right under the Church Court’s nose, beneath the villa where Mr. Blake used to live?"
"It’s because the true Master of Blake City is Her Highness the Saintess herself!"
"And all those missions in the chapel to find Mr. Blake’s relics? Her Highness the Saintess was the one who had them posted."
So this wasn’t Church Court territory. It was the Saintess’s domain.
Or perhaps, it was the real Blake City, built openly, right out in the sun.
"Priest, sir, let me borrow your book for a second!" Elise suddenly ran over to the Priest, snatched the book the old man was reading, and giggled, "I’ll give it right back."
Old Priest: "..."
He silently pulled another book out from the bottom of his drawer: *Essex Chronicles (Volume I)*.
The one Elise had taken was "Volume II."
"Here, see for yourselves."
The girl expertly flipped to page 427, which recorded the story of Carl Black and the First Saintess, Olivia.
There was no lust at first sight, and certainly no coercion. Her Highness Olivia and Mr. Blake were truly in love.
This was the world’s true history.
Written by Olivia herself.
Flipping further, they saw that the First Saintess had even recorded her reasons for building False Heaven—
"They stole everything from the Hall of Truth."
"From the 1st Floor to the 7th Floor, they spared none of it."
"Like a pack of famished wolves, they devoured everything in sight."
"But they don’t know. The secret concerning the divine that Blake left behind before he departed... it wasn’t in the Hall of Truth."
"It was in our former home."
"I took it with me."
"And stored it away with the utmost care."
"I will build a city for it, and everyone in that city shall live to protect this secret."
"Including me."
"I will guard it for all generations, through day and night, through every season."
"Until I finally perish, or until you return safely to me, my love."
