The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 229 - 128: Misunderstanding and Dogs

Perhaps it was a trick of the mind, but when Sean saw that last line, Olivia’s face flickered before his eyes.

He, who should have appeared in the book by name, had instead been written in the second person by Olivia—

"Or you return safely, my love."

It felt as if those words were meant just for him.

Those few short words stirred a complex storm of emotions in Sean.

Back then, he had left without a word, deceiving everyone. He had implanted the memory of his own death into the mind of every Wizard, yet Olivia had kept waiting for him, believing he was not dead. Sean could even imagine what she must have felt as she wrote those lines.

’It must have been so painful for her.’

Though Sean had never personally experienced it—or perhaps he had and simply forgotten—he had heard a saying: The bitterest suffering in the world is longing for a loved one.

"They say the First Saintess was already old when she wrote this book."

Elise was still telling everyone about the book’s origins and the First Saintess’s monumental achievement of single-handedly chronicling the history of the Ascension Continent.

Sean: "..."

The more he heard, the worse he felt. He put himself in Olivia’s shoes: old and past her prime, writing all alone...

’It was even more painful to think about.’

Beside them, Tony was in disbelief. "Are you sure everything in this book is true?"

"Of course," Elise said. "Otherwise, how would you explain how False Heaven and Blake City were successfully built and have survived to this day?"

All land under heaven is the Empire’s.

The vast Ascension Continent is all territory of the Empire, and the master of the Empire is the Church Court. Something as conspicuous as building a city could never have been kept secret.

Unless someone helped them.

And that person must have had enough power in the Church Court to pull the strings.

Besides the Saintess, there was basically no other possibility.

"Going by what you’re saying, doesn’t that mean we’ve misunderstood the Saintess all this time?" Kave slapped his head in frustration. "Who was it that told me the Saintess was the one who slandered Mr. Blake?"

Ryan sighed. "It’s not about who told you. It’s what everyone believed."

Outsiders all thought Mr. Blake had forced the First Saintess to do indecent things back then, and the people of Blake City all thought the current Saintess had said so herself. After all, it concerned the First Saintess’s reputation. Who would dare to just make something like that up, let alone have it used in history textbooks?

Who wouldn’t misunderstand in that situation!

Elise nodded as well. "It’s true, we did misunderstand."

"Actually, besides me, there are many others here who once accepted missions to assassinate Her Highness the Saintess."

"Back then, we all thought the current Saintess was a vicious woman, but the truth was the complete opposite."

"After truly seeing the Saintess in person, no one wanted to assassinate her anymore."

"In their words... uh."

Elise stopped halfway, a look of someone about to say something embarrassing on her face.

Tony and the others, naturally, didn’t like being left in suspense. "Spit it out," they urged. "What did they say?"

Elise hesitated for two seconds. Seeing her sister also gesture for her not to drag it out, she closed her eyes, blushed, and mimicked the tone of those guys. "Everything in the past was a misunderstanding."

"Assassinating the Saintess? That was just youthful ignorance, being deceived by petty villains."

"Now I’ve seen the truth and returned from my misguided path. The mature me would never be so impulsive again."

"So, from this day forward... I am Her Highness the Saintess’s dog!"

"WOOF! WOOF!"

Elise even added two uncannily realistic barks.

Everyone: "..."

The shamelessness was unbelievable.

Sean was also quite confused. "Is there any causal relationship between seeing the truth and becoming a dog?"

"Nope." Elise didn’t get it either. "Maybe they just genuinely want to be dogs..."

In short, the Wizards’ once-irreconcilable hatred for the Saintess had, after coming to False Heaven, learning about her, and meeting her, completely transformed into a tough guy’s tenderness. Their goal had also shifted from assassinating the Saintess to becoming her dogs... Oh, no, "dog" was just a figure of speech. They wanted to join the Knight Order and become one of the valiant generals under the Saintess’s command.

"Damn it, I can hear the clicking of their inner abacuses from decades away," Johnson complained. "What’s this about joining the Knight Order to serve the Saintess? I think these guys are just a bunch of toads lusting after swan meat."

"In short, they’re just driven by lust!"

They did say it was after learning about *and* meeting the Saintess. That "meeting" part was clearly the key.

Sean feigned curiosity and asked, "Do you have a picture of the Saintess?"

He wanted to see what the Saintess looked like, but not in *that* way.

That was the right question to ask. Elise actually had one.

She had secretly taken a picture the last time Her Highness the Saintess came to False Heaven to inspect the Knight Order’s training results.

"Hmph." Tony snorted heavily. "A bunch of pathetic losers, acting like they’ve never seen a woman before. What a disgrace to Blake City."

"Anyone who didn’t know better would think this current Saintess was some kind of peerless beauty."

His words seemed to be aimed at the Saintess’s "dogs," but they were also a jab at Sean.

That is, until Elise took out her phone and pulled up the photo.

Staring at the screen, at the valiant and heroic-looking Saintess in her silver armor, Tony suddenly went silent.

Kave and the others gasped in astonishment.

"HISS!"

"The current Saintess is this beautiful?"

Not just beautiful, but dashing, too.

For Wizards like them, who lived dangerously by licking blood from the tips of their blades and earning money through missions, the Saintess’s beautiful yet heroic face, coupled with her cool and aloof aura, held a fatal attraction.

Tony’s eyes were practically glued to the screen.

Sean’s gaze was mocking. "Why’d you go quiet? Go on, keep talking. Who’s acting like they’ve never seen a woman before?"
