Catherine lowered her head. "Your Highness the Saintess, I await your command."
"Go to the church and speak with the old Priest for me. Revoke Eleanor and Elise's citizenship, send them to the Border Region, and banish them to a farm. Without my permission, they are never allowed to return."
Catherine was stunned for a moment, then replied with gratitude, "Yes!"
Elise, still not understanding what the farm entailed, figured it must be a place for hard labor. She looked up in terror. "Her Highness the Saintess, no, please!"
"This is my home... I don't want to leave," she sobbed.
Diana's brow furrowed even more deeply. She scolded impatiently, "You're a Grand Mage now and you're still sniveling like this? How pathetic."
"So annoying."
"Take them away. They leave tonight."
Eleanor wanted to say something more, but Catherine stopped her with a look.
Before Her Highness the Saintess could issue a true punishment, she quickly pulled the two girls away, fleeing the scene.
After leaving Black Rose Castle.
Tears streamed uncontrollably down Elise's face.
As most of the city's Wizards were gathered inside the castle, the streets seemed exceptionally empty that night. When the wind blew, it swept up the fallen leaves, making the scene feel even more desolate.
Elise sobbed, "Why is Her Highness the Saintess so heartless? If she's going to punish us, fine, but why does she have to kick us out...?"
Catherine glared at her. "You have the nerve to say that."
'Trying to steal a man from Her Highness the Saintess. You probably couldn't find another one like her in all of False Heaven.'
'Not turning Elise to dust on the spot was already an act of great mercy.'
Elise said, feeling wronged, "I just wanted to force myself to give up on him. I wasn't actually trying to compete with her. Did she have to be so vicious?"
"Besides, what's wrong with liking someone?"
"I've lived for more than a decade, and this is the first time I've ever had a crush on a guy... We're all girls here, can't she understand that at all?"
'More than a decade... and it was so difficult for you?'
Catherine: "..."
'You're a lost cause.'
"If you were given another chance, would you dare to do it again?"
Elise said stubbornly, "Why wouldn't I?"
Catherine laughed in exasperation. "You just saw that painting, and you've already forgotten who Sean is? Is that it?"
Elise: "..."
'Sorry. Just pretend I didn't say that.'
'Her Highness the Saintess was right about one thing: I'm really not worthy of Sean.'
'That's Mr. Carl Black. Who could possibly be worthy of him?'
'But before today, I didn't know Sean was Mr. Blake...'
'It feels like these things just happen. It's not like I can control it.'
Although Elise didn't say anything more, she still felt incredibly wronged.
Catherine sighed. "Forget it. I know you won't listen to me, so just obediently follow Her Highness the Saintess's command and spend a few years at the farm. It's what you wanted, anyway."
"What do you mean, 'it's what I wanted'? Who'd want to go to a godforsaken place like that!" Elise whined, putting on a pitiful expression and pleading with Catherine. "Lady Catherine, please, beg Her Highness the Saintess on my sister's and my behalf one more time. We'll accept any punishment, just don't send us away, okay?"
Catherine stopped and sized up the girl. "Are you sure?"
Elise nodded eagerly. "I get it. A death sentence may be spared, but punishment is unavoidable."
"No, this isn't about punishment," Catherine said. "Do you know why Her Highness the Saintess is sending you to the farm?"
Elise asked cautiously, "To be slaves?"
'In her mind, a farm was like a mine. The word "banished" had been used, after all. It definitely couldn't be for anything good.'
But Catherine said, "Wrong."
"Not as slaves. As Maids."
The two sisters: "???"
The sisters were shocked.
'Go to a farm to be Maids?'
'Wouldn't that be a fate worse than being slaves?'
It was common knowledge how debauched the nobility could be. Maids were a form of indentured servant who had to obey their Master's commands unconditionally. In other words, a Master could do whatever they pleased to a Maid, without even needing her consent.
"No way!"
"Death before dishonor!"
Elise stated firmly, "I would rather die than be someone's Maid!"
Eleanor couldn't understand how Diana could be so cruel—this was bordering on malicious. This time, she sided with her sister, saying seriously, "Lady Catherine, if Her Highness the Saintess insists on selling us to someone, then our only choice is to 'defect.'"
Catherine retorted, "What if that person is Sean?"
The two sisters: "?"
Sean?
Elise's eyes widened. "You mean..." she said in disbelief, "Her Highness the Saintess is sending us to be Mr. Blake's Maids?"
Catherine shrugged. "It's just a guess. Don't hold me to it if I'm wrong."
'That's what she said, but Catherine was actually quite confident in her own judgment.'
'There were two reasons.'
'First, Sean came from the farm.'
'Her Highness the Saintess had told her this upon returning and ordered her to have people keep an eye on the place.'
'Second, Sean was only Tier Three.'
'That fact wouldn't change, regardless of whether he was Carl Black or not.'
'The farm was currently in the midst of the Witch Hunt Operation. Needless to say, it was an incredibly dangerous place for a Tier Three Wizard who wasn't one of the Church Court's own. Her Highness the Saintess couldn't go there herself, and her inside contacts couldn't be used lightly. So, the best solution was to find two bodyguards for Mr. Blake and send them to the farm under the guise of Witch Hunters.'
'To the Church Court, the Eleanor Sisters were unknown faces without any official record. This made them better for infiltration than Her Highness's own people.'
'This was likely why Her Highness the Saintess had helped the two girls become Grand Mages in the first place.'
'As for why Maids, and not something else...'
'The reason was simple.'
'Aside from being Maids, the Eleanor Sisters weren't qualified for any other role.'
The moment Elise heard she was to be Sean's Maid, all her resistance vanished. Her attitude changed faster than one could flip a page. She even began to hurry Catherine along, "Well, what are we waiting for?"
