The Most Arbitrary Wizard

Chapter 324 - 159: "Repaying Injury with Kindness

Even so, Yisha still wasn’t confident.

She was mainly afraid of harming innocent civilians.

The election was scheduled for the middle of next month.

That left her with nearly a month.

So for the entire month, Yisha did nothing but eat, sleep, study, and practice shooting. She didn’t even spare a moment for Meditation.

She figured she would be learning the Fallen Nether Technique eventually, so she could worry about increasing her Magic Power in the New World later.

And to help Yisha practice without holding back, Elise personally acted as her target, telling Yisha to aim right for her head.

For one thing, at her Tier, she wasn’t particularly afraid of guns—especially when she knew she was about to be shot.

For another, even if Elise stood perfectly still, Yisha wasn’t guaranteed to hit her.

When Sean found out, he couldn’t stop making sarcastic remarks.

’And here she was,’ he thought, ’the same woman who always said *I* was the reckless one, the one looking for a thrill. Look at her now.’

’She’s even more daring, an even bigger thrill-seeker than I am.’

This led to Sean going to watch Yisha’s practice for several days straight, constantly clutching a Ring of Truth. He was terrified Elise wouldn’t react in time, and he’d lose his gentle and playful beautiful neighbor.

Little did he know, this was actually Elvire’s idea.

She was the one who told Elise to do it.

The bullets in Yisha’s practice sniper rifle had been swapped out for soft-tipped rounds. A direct hit wouldn’t be fatal. But Elvire hadn’t told Sean. She wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine, to let him feel what it’s like to worry about a good friend’s safety. Maybe then that guy would stop looking for trouble all day, acting as if something wasn’t worth doing unless it was dangerous.

But then again...

By the third day, Sean had already figured out something was fishy.

Yisha was firing each shot with too much confidence, as if she wasn’t the least bit worried about actually hurting Elise.

’Her whole reason for practicing was to avoid harming innocent people,’ Sean reasoned. ’So would she risk her best friend’s life just to avoid hurting a stranger? Does that make any sense?’

Sean guessed the bullets were dummies.

But he didn’t let on, either. He pretended he knew nothing and deliberately put on a worried act to satisfy a certain young lady’s desire to teach him a lesson.

Such is the life of adults.

Full of schemes and intrigue.

In the end, Elvire was satisfied. Even though she eventually figured out Sean was just acting, she was still very happy.

Sean wasn’t a particularly patient person. The fact that he was willing to play along with her was, in itself, a sign of his affection.

And when Elvire was happy, Sean was happy too.

It was Elise and Yisha who were slow on the uptake, only later realizing that something wasn’t quite right.

Originally, they were the ones in on the secret, and Sean was the one who was clueless. They were supposed to be the ones playing a prank on him.

But now, Sean knew, and Elvire knew, while the two of them were left in the dark. And on top of that, Sean and Elvire were both pretending *not* to know. Didn’t that mean Sean and Elvire were the ones toying with *them*?

After all this time, were they just a part of this damn couple’s little game?

Realizing the truth, an exasperated Elise declared, "I’m done with this!"

’What is wrong with them?’ she fumed. ’The whole point was to teach Sean a lesson, but it turned into some sweet, platonic game for the happy couple. They totally ditched me for each other! Both of them!’

But while Elise could throw in the towel, Yisha still had to keep practicing.

Her original target was gone, so she just made a new one.

In truth, Yisha didn’t have to be the one to take the shot. Sean just thought it would be more interesting this way.

Yisha, for her part, would want to hit the target—that way, at least no one else would get hurt.

But sniping is a technical skill. A month of practice isn’t enough to accomplish much, unless you’re a natural-born prodigy. The initial aptitude tests had already shown that Yisha wasn’t cut out for it. So, whether she’d hit her mark, and whether Pulente would die, was all up to fate.

When Sean said he wouldn’t hold a grudge, he meant it.

Regardless of the outcome of Yisha’s shot, he would forgive Pulente for labeling him a terrorist.

’That’s called having class. A bigger perspective.’

What’s that?

’Pulente survives and still doesn’t fall in line?’

’Well, that’s a different story.’

Putting these trivialities aside, life in Alola Town was truly comfortable and pleasant, at least in Sean’s opinion. He didn’t have to worry about being hunted down or fear not being able to eat if he didn’t work. He could wake up whenever he wanted and do as he pleased. He was so bored at one point that he considered picking up the novel he had abandoned and starting to write again.

But after a moment’s thought, he decided against it.

’I’ll wait until we’ve secured Siracle State,’ he decided. ’That way, I can at least give the awakened a safe place to develop and grow.’

All in all, Sean was very satisfied with his month-long break.

The only fly in the ointment was that a certain young lady was being a bit mischievous.

He had tried several times to ask Elvire out alone—to see a movie, go shopping, things like that—but she always refused.

She’d claim she needed to focus on her Cultivation, that she was about to reach Tier Six. But then, she would turn around and ask him, "And why should I?"

"Why should I go out just because you ask?"

"Who do you think you are?"

"We’re just friends. Don’t call me unless it’s for something important. I don’t want people to get the wrong idea. Bye."

The meaning between the lines was crystal clear: *Hurry up and confess to me.*

’If they weren’t ’just friends,’ then he’d have a legitimate reason to ask her out.’

Sean’s reaction: ’In your dreams!’

’He was the high and mighty Mr. Blake, after all.’

’He couldn’t bow his head, or the crown would fall.’

’He wasn’t some hormonal teenager who couldn’t live without a woman. If she didn’t want to go on a date, fine. They could just drag this out. Let’s see who gets anxious first. Hmph.’

And so, the days passed, one by one.

「Until January 13th, when the election for Governor of Siracle State officially began.」

The process had three stages spanning a total of 28 days: "Public Nomination," "Open Campaigning," and finally, the "Vote Tally."

The next day, the ever-resourceful Kate procured Pulente’s schedule.

"January 15th, 3:00 PM. Pulente’s first public speech. The location is Romeo Park in Holkaydo."

"Didn’t we say we were going to take him out? This is the perfect opportunity."
