"That’s my signal," Zero muttered as he watched the entire Splinter base power down.
Fixing a grappling hook at the side of the cliff, he jumped to the roof of the base, and the next second, what seemed to be a pen appeared in his hand.
He pointed the tip of the pen towards the metal beneath him, and the next second, a beam of plasma was released from the tip.
The beam easily ate through the metal, creating a hole big enough to allow the hitman through.
"There we go," Zero muttered with a satisfied smile before jumping through the hole he had created.
Since the entire base was plunged into complete darkness and chaos due to the sudden lights-out, no one noticed that the hitman had infiltrated their base.
Zero jumped to the other side of the hole without making even the slightest bit of sound when his feet touched the floor.
The hitman then picked a direction in the hallway and started walking towards it, though his selection was anything but random.
The few days that his clone had spent in this base had been enough for him to memorize every single corner of it, and the direction he was currently walking headed towards Dr. Crew’s family.
He continued through the corridor, avoiding every Splinter he came across, mostly because none of them were threats.

Several floors below the main one, Zero found exactly what he was looking for. A reinforced metal door.
In front of it lay two unconscious guards, whom he had made light work of before they had even noticed his presence.
Since the door could only be opened with the scanner, which was currently inaccessible due to Dr. Crew’s device, the hitman had to rely on his plasma pen again.
Since the door was reinforced, it took quite a while for the plasma to melt through.
After fifteen minutes, the hitman finally managed to cut a large rectangular opening in the door, big enough to let him through.
The moment he stepped into the room, he noticed a family of three huddled together in a corner.
It didn’t help that it was quite dark, so they couldn’t exactly make out his features. Fortunately, the lights suddenly turned on, and he finally had a good look at Dr. Crew’s family.
His family consisted of an older woman, who Zero assumed was the scientist’s wife and two kids, a boy and a girl.
"Who are you?" the woman asked cautiously.
Zero stepped through the opening and raised both hands.
"Relax. I’m not with the Splinters," he said as he looked around the room.
The room was surprisingly comfortable compared to the rest of the base. It had a small bed, a table, several chairs, and enough food to last for days.
And from the looks of the three, it didn’t seem as if they were harmed.
Zero then turned back to them before smiling, "I’m with Dr. Crew."
"..." The three were silent for a while, seemingly skeptical about his words, but the woman still asked, "You know Victor?"
"Well, he used to work with the parents of a friend of mine," The hitman responded with a smile, "so that friend and I decided to help get him out of this place."
"He wanted me to ensure that you three were safe," He added, "so here I am."
The boy, who had remained silent until now, finally stepped forward.
"Where’s Dad?"
"Still in the laboratory, but I’ll make sure to get him out after I’m certain that you three are safe."
The boy seemed to accept that answer, though his mother still looked uncertain.
"How do we know you’re telling the truth?"
"Good question," Zero placed a hand on his chin before shrugging, "I guess you don’t; you’ll just have to trust me for now."
The woman continued looking at him with a frown. On one hand, there was a chance that this stranger was just like the group that captured them to use against her husband.
On the other, there might be a chance that he was really working together with her husband, and this might be their only chance out of here.
"Fine," she finally said, "I’ll trust you for now."
"Great," Zero smiled in satisfaction before turning around, "let’s get going before —"
His words were cut off when he noticed a woman with a calm expression on her face standing beyond the hole he had created in the reinforced door.
"—she shows up," he finished his words with an exhausted sigh.
The woman standing there was the Splinters’ maid, and as unassuming as she looked, he knew that she was a dangerous assassin.
One that had undergone years of training before being discarded by her organization and saved by Cube.
Due to this, her loyalty towards him was unshakeable.
She was also the only person besides the leader who had unrestricted access to this room.
He had known there was a chance she’d show up eventually, but he had hoped to get the family out before that happened.
"Do you mind turning a blind eye to this?" The hitman asked, but in response to his question, two sharp objects were suddenly launched towards his eyes.
Any other person wouldn’t have noticed the objects flying towards them until it was too late.
Zero, on the other hand, was different.
Just before the objects could reach his eyes, the hitman suddenly lifted both hands and caught them.
He realized that they were two metallic Chinese hairpins...coated in poison?
"Damn it," Zero let out as the pins had managed to cut him, which meant that he had less than a minute before his nervous system shut down if an antidote wasn’t administered.
Fortunately for him, his knowledge of poisons came in handy again, because the next second, a syringe appeared in his hand and without hesitation, he jammed it into his neck.
"Well," the hitman muttered, "I’m guessing that’s a no."
Again, the maid didn’t say anything in response; instead, Liam noticed her stance lowering, and the next second,
She disappeared, reappearing directly behind him with a poisoned dagger aimed at his neck.
Zero managed to dodge just in time, but before he could catch her, she disappeared again, creating distance between them.
Instead of trying to rush towards her, Zero simply turned towards the family and said, "he’ll lead you out of here."
Confused, the three turned towards the direction he had indicated, only to notice a bald man in a suit standing there.
He slowly walked towards them and said, "Let’s go."
Dr. Crew’s family were still confused, but they obliged either way.
The maid attempted to get in their way, but Zero wouldn’t allow that. The moment she disappeared and reappeared next to Agent 46, the hitman was also upon her.
She was forced to retreat to avoid her neck being sliced cleanly off her shoulders.
"You’re playing with me," Zero said with a smile as he stood between her and the three, "let the nice family be on their way, will you?"
