Zero watched as Agent 46 escorted Dr. Crew’s family out of the room before he looked back at the cautious maid.
She had been quite confident in her speed, but it seemed she was lacking when compared to the man before her.
"No wonder the others fell to you," She finally spoke up.
Of course she had immediately identified him as Zero, the very same person that was slowly causing the downfall of the Splinters.
Though she hadn’t expected him to infiltrate the base, at the very same moment Dr. Crew had also attempted to escape.
Which meant that the mercenary had a mole within the Splinters, a mole that she’d make sure to get rid of after this.
"I guess that means I don’t have to hold back against you." Without giving the hitman a chance to respond, she disappeared again.
The next second, Zero felt something touching his neck, which forced him to jump back, instead of following through with his intention to catch her.
He moved his fingers to where he felt the contact, and brought them to eye level.
"How strange," he muttered as he noticed that she had indeed managed to draw blood from his neck.
It was strange because his eyes had been tracking her from the moment she made her move.
He was certain that she hadn’t gotten close to his neck, so how—
His thoughts were interrupted when his instincts screamed at him again, forcing him to narrowly avoid having his head removed.
Again, she was quite the distance away, which meant that she was most certainly using her Factor, but he was still trying to figure out what it was.
Since he didn’t have much time to waste trying to figure it out, he simply formed some sort of canister in his hand and put on a gas mask on his face.
He would simply knock her out before they drew on any longer.
Unfortunately, that plan went completely off course, and the canister suddenly flew out of his hand all on its own before being tossed out of the room.
"..." Zero watched the can move through the air with a blank expression before turning back to the maid and muttering, "You don’t happen to have a ghost friend, do you?"
The maid simply stared at him for a moment before shaking her head and kindly responding, "No."
"Figures."
Zero’s eyes narrowed as he studied the room.
The canister hadn’t been kicked or thrown by the maid herself. It had moved the moment it left his hand, almost as if an invisible hand had simply taken it from him.
He suddenly picked up a loose metal bolt from the floor and tossed it into the air.
Nothing happened, and the bolt fell back down.
Zero caught it before it touched the ground, then threw it toward the maid.
She barely made any movement, but the bolt suddenly changed direction in midair, veering sharply to the side before slamming into the wall.
A grin suddenly appeared on the hitman’s lips, "I see."
The maid watched his experiment before she grew bored of it and launched herself towards him, her figure seemingly becoming a blur.
Zero was ready for her attack, and just as he had expected, she appeared in one direction, but the danger came from another.
He jumped back, formed a canister, but instead of tossing it, he attempted to release the gas right in his hand.
Again, he felt something tugging on it, but this time, he refused to let go.
Whatever was trying to pull the gas canister from his hand soon wrapped around it, and as the maid suddenly flicked her fingers,
Zero’s arm was violently yanked downward, forcing him to release the canister, but before it could hit the floor, it was dragged toward her and dropped at her feet.
The hitman stared at the canister before looking back at her, "Invisible strings, how useful for an assassin."
He realized that because of the sensation of strings wrapped around his hand, even though there seemed to be nothing there.
The maid, on the other hand, didn’t seem bothered by the fact that he had discovered what her factor was.
Rather, she curiously asked, "How did you know I was an assassin?"
"A guy feeling," Zero said with a shrug, but that was a lie.
The maid looked at him for a while, noticing the obvious lie, but she didn’t point it out.
Instead, she simply lifted her hand, uninterested in hiding her movements anymore, and Zero immediately felt danger again.
But this time, before he even had the chance to move, the strings suddenly yanked him forward instead, carrying him straight towards the assassin.
She still had her poison-coated hairpins, which she was ready to stab him with.
The hitman tried resisting, but the strings were unnaturally strong, so he gave up on trying to escape them.
Instead, he tilted his head to the side, allowing the pin to graze his mask instead of piercing his skull.
The moment his feet touched the floor, he drove his elbow toward her face, but the maid also managed to duck his attack.
At the same time, Zero felt the invisible strings wrap around his arm, and his elbow was suddenly pulled sideways, throwing his balance off.
The maid took advantage of the opening and stepped inside his guard, bringing one of her hairpins toward his neck.
He quickly regained his balance, grabbed her arm and forced it behind her.
For a moment, the two seemed stuck at an impasse, with no way of freeing the other without harming themselves.
The maid’s expression remained completely calm despite having one arm twisted behind her back.
Zero kept his grip firm, careful not to give her enough room to use the hairpin in her free hand.
But the next second, a smile suddenly appeared on her face, and his instincts immediately went haywire again.
Without hesitation, he forced a distance between them before he suddenly dodged, narrowly avoiding the strings wrapping around his neck.
The hitman had a frown on his face as he recovered before muttering,
"This is getting annoying."
