The Reincarnated Hitman

"Quite smart, huh?"

Cube couldn’t say a word as his bleeding got worse, with blood now coming out of his eyes.

With a sigh, Zero stood back up, formed a gun and said, "Let me put you out of your misery."

Before he could pull the trigger, though, Cube’s arm suddenly moved, but instead of trying to attack, he moved his hand towards the side of his costume, retrieved something and slowly brought it forward.

The Splinter’s entire arm was trembling as he lifted it towards Zero, and the hitman crouched again before accepting it.

It felt like a round metallic object, similar to a locket, but he kept his hand closed as he stood back up.

Zero then pointed the gun at the Splinter, and this time, without hesitation,

BANG!

The Splinter’s body went cold almost immediately as he fell into death’s embrace.

"Finally."

Zero said before lowering the gun and letting out a tired breath before looking down at the small metallic object in his hand.

It really was a locket, and he already had a suspicion of what was within.

Still, he opened it and, just as he thought, a picture lay within. It was a picture of a woman with the brightest smile on her face.

The hitman then closed the locket, let out another exhausted sigh, before putting it in his pocket.

Zero understood that Cube wanted to at least ensure the safety of the woman within that picture.

If he had to guess, she was the hold that the Ring had over him.

Unfortunately, Zero was a hitman, not a hero.

He owed the leader of the Splinters nothing, so there was no reason for him to try and save someone he didn’t even know.

Still, he kept the locket in his pocket.

Perhaps he’d be contracted to get rid of the Ring, especially given the fact that they were still traffickers of awakened humans.

The hitman was certain that he’d soon be in their path, so it wouldn’t be too much trouble.

Or perhaps that was just an excuse he was making to himself.

Zero shook those thoughts out of his head before turning back to Crew, who still had the mask on, and asking, "Are you okay?"

"Hmm," the scientist nodded before looking at Cube’s body.

He knew that one of the two would end up dying, but knowing and actually witnessing it were two different things.

To make matters worse, he felt relieved that Cube was the one who had died. After all, the Splinter had been prepared to take them all down with him.

"Let’s go," Zero’s words pulled him out of his thoughts, "your family’s waiting outside."

Every bit of guilt that Crew felt was suddenly washed away by the fact that he would finally be seeing his family again.

"Right."

The two made their way out of the destroyed lab and towards the elevator, only to realize that it still wasn’t functional.

"..." Zero looked at it for a while before turning to the side and muttering, "Stairs it is."

It took a while, but Zero and Crew soon found themselves outside the base.

With all the awakened humans within the base dead, the splinter henchmen quickly surrendered, refusing to fight someone who managed to take down Cube, even though his arm was broken.

A wise choice, because Zero would’ve simply released a poison gas and gotten rid of them all, since he was too tired for another fight.

The hitman watched as the family of four embraced each other, while he took the chance to transform Agent 46 into Liam.

After a while, the scientist turned back to them and slightly bowed, "Thank you."

Liam immediately waved his hand, "You don’t have to thank me; after all, this is because we had a deal, isn’t it?"

Crew stood up straight before nodding, "Of course."

He then dug into his lab coat and pulled out a USB drive before handing it to Liam and saying, "Here you go."

The clone looked at the drive in the man’s hand for a while before taking it.

He then looked up at Crew’s face before asking, "So, what now?"

Crew stared at Liam for a few seconds before glancing toward his family.

"For now?" He let out a tired sigh. "I think we’ll just go home."

Liam couldn’t help but chuckle at the simplicity of his answer. "Fair enough."

Zero then looked up at the sky and said, "Our ride should be here any moment now."

A moment later, the sound of rotating blades could be heard in the distance, pulling the attention of Crew and his family towards it.

Towards the setting sun, they noticed the silhouette of a large helicopter approaching .

"There it is," Zero spoke up again as it got closer to them.

Sable had been willing enough to do this favor since he also had a grudge against the Splinters, but even if he didn’t, the hitman would’ve found a way to extort the favor out of him.

Hen then turned to the others as he said, "Let’s get going."

Zero, or rather, Liam, found himself back in the apartment with his arm now healed, thanks to Sable.

Lea would kill him if he returned home hurt, so he had himself healed just in case.

"I’m home," he said as he pushed the door open.

"Big brother!" Eli immediately stood up from the couch, put the controller down and welcomed him.

Liam smiled, immediately noticing that the kid wasn’t alone on the living room couch.

Sitting beside Eli was Lea, who was currently holding a bowl of popcorn while staring at the television. "Welcome back."

But there was a third person on the couch, with a controller in hand, and she also turned to look at him.

"H-hi," she said.

It had been a while since he last saw her after their date, mostly because he was getting ready for the splinters, but also largely because she was actively avoiding him.

It was quite surprising that she was here.

With a smile, he responded,

"Hi."
