Chapter 74: 74. Misunderstood

"I’m truly sorry!"

That morning, amid the sudden downpour that was drenching the village, Ana approached Kai, who was sitting alone on the side porch of Baron Viero’s house.

Kai couldn’t leave right away. It wasn’t because of any issues with Baron Viero—the Duke and Keith had already handled that. In fact, royal officials would soon arrive to take care of everything.

For now, Baron Viero’s position would be temporarily filled by his eldest son—a tanned skin young man who looked just as dashing as his father, yet was very friendly and gentle. He was the only person the villagers could trust at the moment. At least, for the time being.

Kai and his group couldn’t leave because of the heavy rain. So, Kai sat alone on the side porch of the house, accompanied by warm fried bananas and a hot latte, thinking of a way for them to leave even though it was raining. Meanwhile, the others preferred to curl up in their own warm blankets.

Until Ana suddenly arrived to offer her apology.

"Ana? Have a seat first, and tell me why you’re apologizing," Kai said, patting the empty spot next to him, gesturing for the girl to sit with him.

However, Ana shook her head gently, hesitant to sit next to Kai because her body and clothes were already soaked from the rain.

"I’m already wet—I mean, I can’t sit next to you; I’m just an ordinary maid," said the girl, avoiding making direct eye contact with Kai.

Kai chuckled upon hearing this, then quietly bought a warm pink towel. He pulled the girl’s arm to shield her from the rain, then draped the clean towel—which he’d just bought from the supermarket—over her shoulders.

Ana, who was both surprised and pleased by Kai’s treatment of her—which hadn’t changed at all—now blushed shyly. Finally, she agreed to sit down, though she kept a slight distance from Kai so he wouldn’t get wet.

"Talk to me while you drink this warm beverage," Kai said, offering his own drink to Ana.

"But this is your drink, young master!" Ana refused.

Kai didn’t give up; he placed his glass between Ana’s hands.

"Drink it—it’s warm. You’ll definitely like it."

Ana couldn’t refuse any longer; she accepted the drink, sipped it slowly, and savored the warmth of Kaileon’s favorite beverage.

It was a bit bitter, but there was a hint of sweetness too. It was very strange but also delicious for Ana, who was tasting something like this for the first time.

"Thank you, young master. Actually, I was rude last night when I assumed you were a servant. I really didn’t know, so..." Ana stopped speaking, unsure of what else to say. She was at a loss for words in front of Kaileon.

How could she have ever thought she’d marry Kaileon, whose social status was so far above hers?

How foolish of her to fall for a stranger whose background she didn’t even know.

"It wasn’t your fault—I was the one who claimed to be a servant, right? I did that just so you’d talk to me," said Kaileon.

Ana lowered her head, feeling a sense of sadness for no apparent reason. But she couldn’t voice her silly disappointment, because it turned out Kai had approached her on purpose. It was only so Kai could get information about Baron Viero.

"I can understand that..." Ana muttered, though it was very clear she was actually deeply sad.

Kai looked at the girl, then reached out to lift her chin so she would look at him.

"Hey, what’s wrong with you? Are you disappointed because I’m the son of Duke Arslan? We can still be friends."

Ana gave a faint smile, then said something hurtful.

"It’s impossible for a noble and a commoner to be friends; our social statuses are too far apart for that. I can only be your servant, young master."

Kai smiled back, then removed his hand from the girl’s face.

"Do you want to be my servant, like Peoni?" Kai asked.

Ana nodded quickly, "I do!"

"In that case, I’ll make you my servant right now. Do you want to come with me now, or be trained by Keith first?" Kai asked.

Ana paused for a moment, wondering if her decision was the right one. However, as an ordinary girl, even before she met Kaileon, she had always wanted to be a servant at the Duke’s estate. This was a great opportunity.

"I’ll study first, young master. By the time your journey is over, I’ll have learned a lot and will be able to serve you well."

Finally, the girl smiled broadly, with no trace of sadness left. Kai was happy to see her like that.

"Good. I’ll tell Keith later. Oh, by the way, do you think it’s okay to leave this region in the hands of Baron Viero’s eldest son?" Kai asked.

Ana nodded confidently, "Zaka is a good young man; he’s also very smart. In fact, most of the Baron’s work is entrusted to Zaka—oh, I mean, Young Master Zaka."

As Kai was thinking hard, he suddenly remembered that Ana was still wearing her wet clothes.

When Kai turned back to Ana, she was already shivering slightly and sneezing.

Panicked, Kai picked her up.

"I’ll take you to your room so you don’t catch a fever. Where’s your room?" Kai asked.

Ana, still shivering, pointed weakly with her hand to indicate where her room was.

Unable to understand Ana’s directions, Kai ended up taking her to his own room, which was much closer—it only took a minute.

Once they arrived, Kai helped Ana sit down in a chair.

"You can take off your clothes, then wrap yourself in this warm blanket. I’ll go borrow some of Peoni’s clothes for you," Kai said.

Ana, still shivering, nodded weakly.

But before Kai could go call Peoni to help Ana, someone suddenly arrived.

"Oh my gosh, what’s going on?" asked Angeline. She came in with her eyes wide open, and they suddenly welled up with tears. It was clear that Angeline was thinking something strange.

"Oh, Angeline, I—"

"Do you like this girl, Kai? I’m fine with it—after all, we’re only engaged for political reasons, so... so..." Before she could finish her sentence, the emotional and still-unstable Angeline burst into tears.

Finally, Peoni and Jeny arrived, both sharing the same thoughts as Angeline.

Then Ana spoke up, "You’ve all misunderstood. The young master brought me here so I could change my clothes; he was even going to find me some dry clothes since I got soaked in the rain." After saying that, Ana started sneezing.

Peoni immediately entered Kaileon’s room to bring Ana out.

"I’m sorry we all fell asleep, young master... you must have panicked because there was no one here but you. Please forgive us, young master," said Peoni.

Hearing that, Jeny and Angeline realized their accusations were unfounded.

"No, I was also at fault for not thinking clearly; I should have called you first. I shouldn’t have brought Ana straight to my room—that’s why you two misunderstood."

"It’s okay, young master. Making mistakes is normal—anyone can do it. I’ll help Peoni and Ana, so you can talk privately with the young lady," said Jeny, gesturing to Kai to clear up the little misunderstanding with Angeline.

After everyone left, leaving only Kai and Angeline in the room, Kai closed the door. Then he approached Angeline, who was sitting on the edge of the bed with her head bowed.

Kai sat down next to Angeline, facing her, and gently lifted her chin.

"Angel, I’m sorry about earlier," Kai said.

Angeline shook her head gently, "I was wrong, too, for accusing you of things that weren’t true, even though I saw with my own eyes that the girl was shivering. Besides, I shouldn’t have been jealous, because it’s common here to have other lovers as concubines. I know I can’t have you all to myself."

Kai smiled slightly, feeling guilty for making his beautiful fiancée think that way.

"Our mothers were both concubines; I understand how you feel... because we know firsthand how unpleasant it is to be the child of a concubine. I don’t know if I’ll have a concubine myself, but for now, I only want you, and I hope it stays that way in the future. I’m sorry if I got too close to my servant, Angeline; I’ll try to keep my distance from any woman—"

"No!" Angeline exclaimed suddenly. Then she added, "You don’t need to keep your distance from anyone; I trust you, Kai. It’s just... well... I think I’ve been reading too many romance novels.
