Night fell over Santa Rosa Island, plunging the forest into darkness.

Selena stood at the front of the group, ready to lead us to Class Two's base. Mai wanted to use a spatial portal to get us there instantly, but Selena shook her head. She claimed she didn't know the exact spatial coordinates for a portal, so we had to navigate on foot.

We formed a marching line as we stepped into the dark woods.

Selena took the lead. Brock walked directly behind her, his arms crossed, glaring at the back of her head.

Grace—funny enough—walked far in the back, hiding behind two other classmates.

Koda and I stayed in the middle of the group. Mai brought up the rear, keeping her hands ready, while the rest of the class walked on the outer flanks to guard our sides.

"Keep your eyes open," Mai whispered from the back. "Night moves fast out here."

We hiked through the forest for a couple of hours.

Finally, the trees cleared.

Ahead of us sat a heavily fortified base built right beside a large lake. It had high wooden walls, spike barricades, and a watchtower.

Except there was one problem.

The base was completely empty.

There were no torches lit, no guards in the tower, and no sound coming from inside. It was abandoned.

Before anyone could ask what was going on, a loud sound echoed from the opposite direction—back down the path we had just walked.

Selena started laughing hysterically.

Brock lunged forward, his fist glowing and punched her straight in the face.

Selena flew backward, crashing hard into the ground. Her lip was split, bleeding, but she wiped her mouth and kept smirking.

"You two-faced bitch!" Brock roared, his face turning red with fury. "You tricked us!"

"I just did my job," Selena said.

Koda stepped forward. "So you were a spy after all."

Selena grinned. "I prefer the term secret agent."

"Oh my goodness!" Grace gasped dramatically from behind her two human shields, covering her mouth with her hands. "How could you be so evil?!"

"Shut up, Grace," Mai shouted from the rear. She raised her hands. "Everyone get together! I'm opening a portal back to our plateau right now!"

"Hold it, Portal," Koda said, stepping forward. He placed a hand on her wrist, forcing her hands down. "We aren't going anywhere."

Mai looked at him. "Why? Selena led us into an ambush! We need to get back to our base!"

"Because we have checkmate," Koda smiled, his eyes gleaming.

He raised his finger and drew a quick symbol in the air.

Over on the ground, the handcuffs binding Selena’s wrists unlocked and fell off. But before she could stand up, a red flare shot straight out from the center of the cuffs, screaming into the night sky and exploding in a massive shower of red sparks above the lake.

Selena gasped, shielding her eyes.

Koda’s finger flew through the air, tracing a large square right in the fallen leaves next to the empty camp.

A box solidified out of thin air, its walls completely transparent from the inside.

"Everyone inside," Koda ordered.

Class Four quickly scrambled inside the drawn box. The moment the last person stepped in, Koda sealed the opening.

Moments later, footsteps came crashing through the woods.

A group of Heroes rushed into the clearing.

It was Class One.

Every single member of Class One was present—except for their leader and co-leader.

Selena’s eyes went wide with shock. She scrambled backward on the ground, screaming and calling out for her team. "What?! Where is Class Two?! Why are you here?!"

Inside the box, Koda chuckled softly. He looked at Class Four and whispered, "Those handcuffs were a beacon. The moment I drew them, they began emitting a high-frequency BP signature that any skilled tracking Hero could follow from miles away."

Brock let out a laugh and slapped Koda hard on the back, nearly knocking the painter over. "You trapped the trapper! Good fucking work, painter!"

A second later, more footsteps pounded through the brush on the opposite side of the lake.

Class Two came rushing into the clearing. Just like Class One, every member of Class Two was present—except for their leader and co-leader.

The two classes stopped in the middle of the clearing, staring at each other in shock.

Inside our hidden box, Grace frowned, asking in her sweet voice, "Why didn't either class bring their leaders or co-leaders?"

"Because the leaders aren't stupid," Mai explained. "They stayed behind to defend their main bases, and they knew a beacon going off in an empty camp was probably a trap."

Grace looked around at the walls of our shelter. "Why can't they see us?"

"Because the box I drew has a two-way mirror film," Koda explained. "We can see out, but to them, we're completely invisible. We look like leaves."

Outside the box, Class One and Class Two were standing face to face.

Inside the box, Koda watched the tension rise, his smile stretching wide across his face.

"Now," Koda said, "we watch the main event and pick up the pieces once it's done."

Class Two and Class One engaged in a full-on war.

It raged for hours under the dark night sky. Blessings of every type exploded across the clearing—vines, bugs, clay, forcefields, and shadow blades. Neither side gave an inch.

One by one, heroes were injured, knocked out, or forced to drop out.

Finally, as the first light of dawn began to seep through the trees, the noise died down. Out of fourteen heroes, only four remained standing, panting and covered in blood:

A hero with a Star Blessing, one with a Slime Blessing, another with a Cheese Blessing, and Selena.

"Now," Koda said inside the box, unsealing the wall.

Brock popped out of the box like a cannonball, his fists glowing gold. He closed the distance in a second, punching the Star hero and the Slime hero straight into the dirt, knocking them both out cold instantly.

Nelvin lunged right behind him, transforming his arm into a water whip and blasting the Cheese hero into a tree.

Selena dropped to her knees, screaming in pure terror at the sight of Class Four emerging from thin air for the second time.

Koda walked over and looked down at her.

"Take us to the real base," Koda said.

Selena scrambled to her feet and led us deep into the thickest part of the forest.

After twenty minutes of walking, we arrived at a rocky hollow. Built directly against the wall was Class Two’s actual stronghold. It was a full-on wooden cabin with reinforced timber walls and iron shutters.

Two people were standing on the wooden porch, waiting for us.

Selena stepped forward, her voice shaking violently. "Danny... I'm so sorry! I tried to—"

Before she could finish her sentence, the man stepped forward and delivered a blindingly fast palm strike straight to her jaw.

Selena was knocked out cold before she even hit the floorboards.

The man wiped his hand on his pants. He was wearing a denim jacket and jeans, with a thick black choker around his neck.

He turned his gaze toward Class Four. "My name is Danny. A-Tier Steam Blessing. Rank 499."

Danny pointed a thumb over his shoulder, toward the doorway of the cabin.

"And that's our leader," Danny said. "Necrowoman."

Everyone went silent.

Necrowoman needed zero introduction. She was legendary in the industry. Rank 100.

A tall figure stepped out from the doorway of the cabin onto the porch. She was wearing dark grey robes that completely obscured her frame.

Her eyes locked onto Class Four.

Necrowoman slowly reached up, pulled down her hood, and licked her lips.

"Will you be my next subjects?" she asked.

Before anyone could answer, Koda took action.

"Portal! Above them! Now!" Koda barked.

Mai ripped open a portal right above the cabin porch.

Koda leaped through the gateway, his finger drawing a giant net in the air. The net materialized, dropping straight down toward the cabin.

Danny raised one hand and released a scalding blast of high-pressure steam. The boiling vapor shredded Koda's net to pieces in a microsecond.

Necrowoman raised a hand from under her robes. Black energy shot from her palm, shaping itself into a featureless, humanoid creature made entirely of darkness.

The black creature opened its mouth and shot a stream of black fire straight up at Koda.

I acted instantly, creating a blast of high-pressure wind that blew the black fire off course, saving Koda before he could get burned.

Danny looked up at me.

"I forget there are three of you," Danny said, pointing a finger at Mai, Koda, and me. "That's not fair. Three S-Tiers against one."

Mai raised her hands again, opening another portal. She warped herself directly toward the porch, trying to get between Danny and Necrowoman to split them up.

But before she could land, Necrowoman’s minion blurred forward, intercepting Mai and blocking her strike with force.

Wings.

I shot forward through the air, diving toward the minion to freeze it solid.

Danny saw me coming and thrust both palms forward toward the sky.

A boiling circle of superheated steam formed in the air around me. The vapor created an impenetrable wall of heat, pressing hard against my wind currents. I was completely stuck, hovering inside a ring of boiling steam.

Koda tried to flank them from the back, drawing a giant spear, but Danny turned his head and released a roaring steam tornado. The force of the boiling wind blew Koda and his drawings backward into the snow.

Danny was an A-Tier, but his Level was 208.

Meanwhile, Necrowoman still hadn't moved an inch from her spot on the porch. She just stood there letting her minion do all the work.

I hovered inside the ring, feeling the heat press against my body.

I was going to have to try something drastic once more.
