"I know I was in the wrong, and I apologize for it."
Noah bowed his head while being seated on a chair opposite to the headmaster in the latter’s office.
Nemur observed the kid in silence, not saying a word in response.
Noah on his part kept his head bowed down, not wanting to unknowingly disrespect the headmaster.
The silence stretched between the two, which made Noah anxious with every passing moment.
"What punishment do you think would be suitable for your... misconduct?"
The headmaster finally asked, making Noah raise his head to meet the former’s gaze.
"I am ready to go through anything."
Noah took a deep breath as he said those words, but though his voice was filled with confidence... from within, he couldn’t help but worry about the headmaster’s judgement, which could possibly be far worse than he could ever imagine.
The headmaster didn’t respond, as he tapped the table with the tip of his fingers... drumming the surface to create a rhythmic sound effect.
Each tap intensified Noah’s heartbeat, making him question whether the headmaster was using his mana to create such an effect.
"The visit to the Levaith Duchy... you won’t be scored for it."
"..."
The words were brief, but their impact wasn’t.
Noah’s eyes widened as he realised the consequences of his actions in their truest form.
The assignment to the duchy was going to be an important one as even the students from the senior years were going to participate in it, so it was a given for the assignment to reflect in their final scores for the year.
And not being scored for something like that—
"Sir, but—"
"Your rank may suffer by quite a bit. I know that, which is why it would be the punishment for your misconduct in the grounds of the academy. Not only had you fought, but you had done so against a senior and the vice president of the student council no less."
"..."
"Overlooking something like that would undermine the authority of the council, and make the students lose their trust in its reliability."
Noah involuntarily bit his lower lip as he tried to come to terms with his punishment, but no matter how much effort he put in... it wasn’t easy to not be affected by the judgement passed on him.
Losing his rank was one thing, but Noah could even lose his place in class S, which was supposed to be the class for the top elites of the academy.
Scoring poorly in the assignment was a lot more different than not being scored for it.
The headmaster, after delivering the punishment, went quiet as he let Noah process everything—
"Sir."
Noah stood up from his seat, before placing both of his hands on either side of the table and—
Bowed deep enough for his head to touch the cold surface of the table.
"Please... give me another chance."
Noah couldn’t afford to be demoted from his class, as the features that the students in S class enjoyed were many times better than what the students in the rest of the classes received altogether, but... that wasn’t the only reason behind his attempt to reduce the intensity of his punishment.
Being demoted from the S class meant that he would no longer be able to stay with Alicia, as well as the other friends that he had made along the way.
The top elites in the academy were all concentrated in his class... and many of them were the heirs to the major powers in the world, with most of them being the direct descendants of all the elite noble houses in Jutan.
These were the people who would go on to govern the world in the future, so losing the opportunity to study in his current class would very well mean losing access to all of these connections.
The headmaster didn’t react much to the desperate apology before him, but Noah was too stubborn to withdraw and silently accept his punishment.
"Making an exception for you would be difficult—"
"But you had made an exception for Kael... didn’t you?"
"..."
Noah slowly raised his head as he met the headmaster’s gaze, which lost its previous vitality the moment the accusation was raised.
Noah knew he was gambling on a risky bet... but it wasn’t like he was completely wrong in his question.
"Kael had been suspended for about a month."
The headmaster calmly responded, not letting the accusation affect the tone of his voice, which still had a subtle warmth in it.
"But he had fought the vice president as well, and... I couldn’t defeat her, but Kael had cut off her arm, along with the arms of every member of the disciplinary committee present at that time."
Noah stated the facts with bated breath.
If seen from a logical point of view and with complete neutrality... Kael’s offence was much more severe than that of Noah, so it felt fair for the guy to draw up the comparison between the punishments that the two had received.
"Are you accusing me of playing favourites?"
"I wouldn’t dare to."
Noah’s response was immediate, but despite his polite answer... it was clear for anyone to see that his feelings didn’t match with the words that he had just uttered.
The temperature in the air dropped low, as the headmaster kept staring into Noah’s eyes, and the latter on his part didn’t withdraw his eyes either.
The silence extended for about a minute... its intensity beginning to make Noah feel even more anxious than before.
"Do you wish to get suspended for the same amount of time as Kael had been?"
The question made Noah shake his head in denial.
"I wouldn’t dare to disrespect your authority, sir. You don’t have to change the punishment... I just want to receive fair treatment without being discriminated against for my origins."
Noah was referring to his status as an orphan.
But even if he wanted to be treated equally, he couldn’t simply undermine the authority of the headmaster’s words.
As the headmaster had already given out his verdict, Noah wasn’t willing to risk offending him just to save himself from being demoted... so he tried his best to appear as humble as he could be in his defence.
"Very well... if you think that the punishment you are receiving is unfair, I can give you an opportunity to redeem yourself, but... you will have to prove yourself worthy of the redemption."
