Because of his Talent, Duan Fei knew he was prone to encountering random events.

He just hadn’t expected it to be *this* frequent. He’d barely stepped off the ship before someone ’invited’ him over.

Gesturing with his eyes for Duan Fei to walk ahead, the youth kept his distance, the Laser Gun in his hand trained on Duan Fei the entire time.

It wasn’t until they reached a secluded spot that the youth spoke. "Why do you want to learn about the Void?"

"I’m Astarte, captain of the *Long Range*. Traversing the Void is my job. Is there a problem with wanting to improve my skills?"

"You’re Astarte? Hold on."

The youth tapped his wristband, pulling up file after file of information on Astarte.

After comparing the data to Duan Fei’s face for a long time, the youth frowned and said doubtfully, "Alright, the data checks out, and your personal information is a match. But I have one question. You’re a known alcoholic. Why would you get off the ship and look into the Void instead of heading straight for a drink?"

"My experience on the ship made me realize alcohol is a bad thing, so I’ve decided to quit."

"That’s a well-crafted excuse."

"You don’t believe me?"

"No. But I don’t have any proof, so I have to let you go. If you please, Mr. Astarte."

Duan Fei walked out of the alley. Just as he reached the entrance, he felt a sudden heat in his arm.

Whipping his head around, he saw the youth had drawn his Laser Gun and fired a shot at his arm.

The damage he took was automatically reduced to 1, but the shot still burned a small hole in his clothes, revealing unblemished skin beneath.

"Are you insane?!" Duan Fei clutched his head and said with exasperation, "Shooting someone you just met? Do you have any common sense at all?"

"I get that a lot. But it’s effective. It’s only wrong one time out of ten."

"I feel sorry for that one guy you got wrong."

They shared a look and a smile, and then the fight was on.

The youth had a talent for shooting. The moment Duan Fei moved, he pulled another pistol from his jacket and fired three shots at his head.

This wasn’t a Laser Gun, but an old-fashioned revolver. At this range, the gunpowder-packed slugs had enough power to shatter a man, Bone and all. With his left hand for support, he could even pull off a three-shot burst.

All three bullets struck Duan Fei squarely in the head. The powerful impact even forced him back several steps, but unfortunately for the shooter, the damage was only three points.

’About the same as getting whacked on the shoulder with a Crowbar.’

After changing his Profession, Duan Fei felt his stamina and health pool had both increased. Combined with the fact that he was already a Level 10 player, this kind of damage was no big deal.

And now, it was time for Duan Fei’s counterattack.

He instantly activated his Spiritual Armor. Energy from the Void formed a hard barrier around him, providing him with a massive boost to his Attributes.

With his Spiritual Armor active, his base Spiritual Power of 30 was boosted to the equivalent of 67, bringing his other stats to three times the value of a normal person’s.

Whipping out his Crowbar, Duan Fei charged. The indestructible weapon, which also dealt Splash damage, slammed into his opponent. The youth let out a muffled grunt as half of his body shattered, dissolving into a mercury-like liquid.

Seeing the liquid, Duan Fei’s expression turned grave.

Turning his head, Duan Fei realized the surrounding sounds were slowly fading away. Even when a hovercraft flew past the mouth of the alley, he heard nothing.

’This feeling...’

"You’re a Void Spirit? Why are you helping the Federation? Do they have something on you?"

The youth didn’t answer.

His body began to reform. The surrounding liquid flowed toward him, coalescing until he had returned to his original shape.

Knowing physical attacks were useless against this kind of creature, Duan Fei didn’t hesitate, immediately unleashing the second part of his combo.

His formidable Spiritual Power provided the base stats, but the next move was his true goal.

One of the Summoner’s Professional Skills: [Random Summoning].

It summoned a being he knew to his location. The being’s favorability toward him and his own Spirit stat would determine the strength of the Summoned Creature, and would also grant the summon an additional buff.

This was a Skill that had only appeared after the last update, and one that Duan Fei had decided to pick the moment he read its description.

After all, he knew plenty of powerful figures. The one with the highest favorability toward him was an urban legend from Love City. Summoning her would definitely be a showstopper.

A black gateway unfolded before him. Eerie mist seeped out, filling the narrow alley.

Then, a towering figure emerged from the gateway. A clear, crisp laugh rang out, carrying with it a strange and indescribable horror.

A bride in red stepped out. A veil, still dripping with blood, covered her face. Only by her vibrant red lips, visible beneath the veil’s edge, could one tell that she was smiling.

Infected by the sound, Duan Fei felt an overwhelming urge to laugh as well.

But the Ghost Bride immediately reached out, embracing Duan Fei from behind and covering his ears with her hands.

The laughter vanished.

But Duan Fei had her lower her hands, indicating that he could handle it.

’Maybe I can even unlock a passive skill.’

For some reason, this gesture seemed to make the Ghost Bride especially happy; even her laughter grew more cheerful.

The youth’s Void Spirit trait made all sound disappear, while the Ghost Bride’s trait forced everyone nearby to hear her laughter and laugh along uncontrollably.

Their traits were in direct conflict. Victory would be decided by their respective power levels.

The laughter flickered in and out of existence, and Duan Fei’s own smile appeared and vanished in tandem.

Every time his laughter reached its peak, he could feel his mouth split open, the entire upper part of his head vanishing and converting into a single point of damage.

’What a terrifying and absurd attack!’

’If it weren’t for my Talent, I’d be dead already.’

The youth opposite him was also repeating the same process.

He tried his best to control the corners of his mouth, but the gap in their power forced him to experience decapitation over and over again. Finally, he fell completely silent, dissolving into a pool of liquid.

The strange thing was, just before he died for good, Duan Fei saw that he was smiling.

Unlike the smile forced by the Ghost Bride, this was a smile of relief, as if a heavy burden had been lifted and his entire being was finally at ease.

Staring at the liquid for a moment, Duan Fei figured he was probably dead for good.

Still, the fact that he’d been targeted by a Void Spirit—and one that could access the local database—felt very wrong to Duan Fei.

’What exactly are Void Spirits?’

’And what’s the difference between the conscious and unconscious ones?’

After a moment of thought, Duan Fei felt himself being lifted.

The Ghost Bride was holding him in a princess carry. Beneath her veil, her lips moved silently.

Although he couldn’t hear what she was saying, Duan Fei understood her meaning nonetheless.

*Stay with me.*

"Shouldn’t you be heading back? I think your time is almost up."

*Twelve hours will be fine.*

"But that’s the entire duration of your summoning!"

*Then let’s get married.*

"Never mind. I’ll stay with you."

A smile graced the Ghost Bride’s lips, and she carried Duan Fei away from the alley.

Not long after they had gone, a girl of about six arrived.

Looking at the traces on the ground, she said coldly, "My sixth is gone. Does that make me the seventh?"
