Even though he’d been observing the Void every day for the past few days, this was the first time Duan Fei had actually entered it.

How should he put it? It felt... welcoming.

The feeling was like coming home, a sense of comfort that permeated his every pore.

A more accurate description would be the comfort of summer vacation when your parents are away—the kind of freedom where you can play video games and drink cola to your heart’s content.

But the other players weren’t having such an easy time.

The Shadow God and the Missionary of Love were faring better. One was protected by Magic Power, the other by Inner Strength. Both forces could somewhat counteract the Void’s corrosion, preventing them from feeling too uncomfortable.

But it was a miserable experience for pure Support Professions like Little Fatty and Little Drilling Wind.

Overwhelmed by the Void’s corrosion, they simply decided to go idle. They made it clear that since they had gotten this far, the others could proceed with the story at their own pace and leave them be.

Within the Void, there was only darkness. It seemed as if countless wraiths were wailing all around, instilling a bone-deep terror in everyone who entered.

From the moment they entered, those with low Spiritual Power began to feel the Void’s corrosion. The Director, in particular, felt as if she had fallen into an icy cavern and began to shiver uncontrollably.

After an unknown amount of time, a sliver of light finally appeared within the Void.

Though faint as a spider’s thread, this wisp of light was the sole salvation in the Void. The sight of it inspired an irrepressible urge to worship, to fall to one’s knees before its source and beg for forgiveness.

As the light drew nearer, everyone could see cold flames burning. Enthroned above them sat a massive, desiccated corpse, its body charred black. It stared down at them all with a look of cold, arrogant indifference.

Upon seeing this figure, En Tu began to cry. Sai Wen did too.

"How tragic! How agonizing! Our true form... what torments did you suffer during your imprisonment here?"

From the two Void Detectives’ reactions, Duan Fei was certain: the figure before them was the former Level 6 Superpower User.

The Void flames seemed to have incinerated all its feelings and reason. A long moment passed before the desiccated corpse’s eyes twitched, finally noticing the people below.

"Ah, new offerings? You. Come."

Lifting a withered finger, it pointed at the Regenerator on the ground. A stream of eerie blue flames shot from its own body and landed on the man.

Though it was just a small flicker of fire, the Regenerator, now wreathed in it, let out a heart-wrenching scream, as if his very soul was being incinerated and turned into pure agony.

"Let me die! Let me die!"

The battle-hardened Regenerator, who wouldn’t care if half his body was blown off, now shrieked in agony from the flames’ touch—a sound of despair he had never uttered before.

"This is my Superpower, the flames of the Void. It can drive the Void back from the real world, just a little. The price is this endless pain," the Deity on the Flame Throne said. "Thank you, Regenerator. You have taken a small share of the flames, allowing me to regain a sliver of my sanity and think. Void Detectives, you have returned."

"Yes, our true form."

"And some other offerings... a pity they are all too weak. Some don’t even possess the power of the Void. As for you... descendant of my foe? Why are you here? To stab me in the back, too?"

It was clearly displeased with the Director, its tone dripping with malice, yet the Deity’s actions were surprisingly gentle.

It was sheltering the Director, driving away the Void that clung to her.

The Director, whom the Deity had addressed, gradually quieted down. As the pain receded, she became aware of the Deity floating in the air.

Bowing her head to the Deity, the Director said fearfully, "I beg your forgiveness, great Deity."

"I will not forgive you, but nor will I move against you. The sin was your ancestor’s, and your ancestor’s sin was born from humanity’s deep-seated distrust of its creators. I should have been suspicious of them, but I was not. That, too, is my sin—a sin born of arrogance."

Sensing the Deity’s immense compassion and its unconditional love for humanity, the Director felt a profound sense of redemption welling up from deep within her soul, and she broke down, weeping uncontrollably.

When her tears subsided, she knelt before the Deity, kissed the ground beneath its feet, and pleaded, "Great Deity, I beg you, save humanity! Free us from the Void once and for all!"

"It’s no use." The Deity shook its head. "I understand what you mean by ’freed.’ You want humanity to gain all the benefits of the Void without being corrupted by it. But it’s no use. It might have been possible before, but because of your ancestor’s betrayal, I am now powerless to help."

"Right now, just to maintain the sanity to speak with you all, I require a Level 5 Superpower User. But the power she provides is far too little, leaving me helpless."

"The ship!" Hancock suddenly yelled. "There are lots of Superpower Users on the ship! If we..."

"It’s no use." The Deity shook its head again. "They are not Superpower Users. The only Superpower Users here are you and the Regenerator. If you are willing to burn, perhaps there is still some hope."

Hancock’s eyes went wide. He couldn’t believe it was true.

The Director, however, was looking at Hancock. She said in a low voice, "It’s true. We have quite a few Superpower Users, but not many are powerful enough to be Level 5. The truth is, you were the real cargo. The others are just offerings for after you become a Void Spirit. They’re all normal people."

"But that’s not what Alpha told me!"

"A second-hand machine. Why would we let it know too much?"

"Then what is my Superpower!" Hancock asked in disbelief.

"Luck. Extreme luck. And as far as we know, you’re the Level 5 Superpower User closest to reaching Level 6."

"That’s impossible!"

"Why would it be impossible? Do you have any idea how much effort it took us to make you divorce your wife? The strings we had to pull to get you into this mess? And yet you got out of it just by running into a few random people! Do you realize how terrifying your luck is? It defies causality itself!"

"Then what about them?!" Hancock yelled frantically, pointing at Duan Fei and his group. "Aren’t they Superpower Users?"

"I don’t know! The only explanation is that because of the danger you were in, your Superpower turned them into Superpower Users."

"You bastards!"

Enraged, Hancock surged forward and repeatedly punched the Director in the face. He didn’t stop, even as her face became a swollen, bruised mess and blood streamed from her nose.

Even though she was being beaten brutally, the Director never let go of Hancock.

Only when he finally stopped did she spit out a mouthful of blood and broken teeth. "Please," she mumbled indistinctly.

"Shut up!"

"Please, this might be our last chance. Burn."

"I told you to shut up!"

"I’m sorry. I apologize on behalf of everyone who’s ever hurt you. I am so sorry. But... but... this is humanity’s last chance. Burn, Hancock!"

"Don’t you guilt-trip me!"

"Think about your wife! Your daughter! Please, I’m begging you. You can hit me. You can beat me. Kill me, if you want. You can even let me die in the Void flames."

"Just shut up!"

"Burn, Hancock. Be a hero."
