Chapter 139: Chapter 139: Paying the Bill

"Why are you here?" Evan asked bluntly.

After all, he and Chloe were fated to meet, which was why they always ran into each other. But Ethan Prescott shared no such fate with them.

"And why can’t I be here?" Ethan retorted, brazenly sitting down right next to Chloe as if he belonged there.

’Seriously, when Ethan decides to be shameless, he really goes all in.’

It was Evan’s first time seeing this side of Ethan. Every other time they had met, Ethan had always been so arrogant and overbearing.

"Hey, Owner! Another two or three dishes for this table! Whatever you think is good," Ethan yelled to the owner, who was standing at the cash register.

The owner heard him and looked up to see that another handsome young man had joined Chloe’s table at some point.

"You got it!" Though puzzled, the owner agreed. He figured the three of them must be classmates, out celebrating the end of their college entrance exams.

Chloe paid Ethan no mind. ’It’s fine, I’ll just ignore him.’

Soon, the three dishes Chloe had ordered were served. Chloe and Evan picked up their chopsticks, ready to dig in.

"Chloe, you have to try this. It’s absolutely delicious!" Evan urged her again before they started eating.

"Alright!"

Hearing them, Ethan also picked up his chopsticks to help himself. But Evan was faster, using his own chopsticks to block Ethan’s. "What do you think you’re doing? Your dishes haven’t arrived yet. These are ours."

"What’s with all this ’yours’ and ’mine’? Once it’s on the table, it’s for everyone. We’re all sharing. You can eat my dishes when they get here!" With that, Ethan ignored Evan and reached for the food again.

Evan moved to stop him again, but Chloe just shook her head. ’There’s no need,’ she thought. ’We can just eat the dishes he ordered later. That way, we get to try more things!’

The three of them began to eat, the atmosphere at the table strangely harmonious.

The owner brought out the rest of the food, and soon all six dishes were on the table. He immediately returned to the cash register, cracking sunflower seeds while he watched the drama unfold.

’Evan has been eating alone for the past two days,’ the owner thought. ’I didn’t expect today to be so entertaining. He brings a girl, which is surprising enough, but then a love rival shows up right after. This is great.’

"Boss, those two guys are so handsome!"

The new waitress sidled up to the owner, her eyes glued to Evan and Ethan, a lovestruck look on her face.

They’d never had such handsome guys in the restaurant before, let alone two at the same time.

The only downside was the girl with them. They were like a little clique that no one else could break into.

She was really jealous of that girl, having two handsome guys like that fawning over her.

"They can be as handsome as they want, but they’re not for you," the owner said, seeing right through his waitress. "See that girl? They’re both into her."

"So what if they both like her? She’s only one person. It’s not like she can date them both. She has to choose one, which means the other one will be free!" the waitress retorted with a pout.

’She can’t date them both, right? She has to leave one for the rest of us!’

"Heh heh, what if she picks one, and the other one can’t let go and decides to protect her from the sidelines forever? It’s not impossible."

The waitress didn’t want to hear another word from her boss. Nothing he said was what she wanted to hear.

Before they knew it, the three of them had finished their meal.

Since Ethan had joined them, he naturally wanted to be the one to pay. This was his chance to make a good impression.

But Chloe had already told Evan this meal was her treat, so she planned on paying as well.

As Chloe walked toward the register to pay, Ethan immediately followed and cut her off.

"Chloe, how could I let you pay? I’ll get it. Boss, how much is the bill?"

With that, Ethan pulled out his phone, ready to pay.

"258 yuan." The owner gave them the total for all six dishes.

"No, thank you. I’m paying for the three dishes Evan and I had. You can pay for the three you ordered."

Chloe’s words made Ethan’s heart sink. ’She’s drawing such a clear line with me, but she and Evan are so close?’

But then another thought struck him. He shot Evan a mocking look. "You know, Chloe, a guy who lets you pay when you go out to eat... that says a lot about his character, don’t you think? He can’t be much of a gentleman."

Evan found Ethan’s words laughable. He just shook his head in amusement but didn’t say anything, nor did he make any move to pay.

"We already agreed on this. It’s none of your business. You pay for your food, and I’ll pay for mine," Chloe stated firmly. "Boss, we’re splitting the bill. Can you tell me how much I owe?"

Hearing this, the owner picked up his calculator and recalculated.

"Your three dishes come to 132 yuan."

"Got it." Chloe opened WeChat, scanned the QR code, and paid her share.

Ethan scanned the code and paid his share as well.

"Let’s go," Chloe said, walking over to Evan.

"You bet!" Evan stood up with a triumphant smirk, shot a glance at Ethan, and followed Chloe out of the restaurant.

Seeing Evan’s smug look, Ethan’s heart ached even more.

He could sense that the bond between Chloe and Evan was strong now—stronger than what he and Chloe had.

’He and Chloe were the ones who grew up together. So how is it that those two now look more like the childhood sweethearts than we do?’

"Where are you staying?" Chloe asked Evan once they were outside the restaurant.

"I’m staying at a guesthouse just over there," Evan said, pointing.

To her surprise, it was in the same direction as her own guesthouse. "Me too!" Chloe said, her voice filled with pleasant surprise. "We can walk together."

"Sounds good!"

The two walked off toward their guesthouses, with Ethan trailing behind them, dragging his suitcase like a forlorn tag-along.

"When are you heading back?" Evan asked, starting a conversation.

"The day after tomorrow. I’m going to check out the campus tomorrow."

"I’ve already been," Evan volunteered. "How about this? I can be your tour guide tomorrow and show you around our future campus. What do you say?"

’Actually, I was planning to head back tomorrow,’ he thought. ’I knew Chloe was accepted to Southbend University, so I gambled that she might come visit early. I came here early to stake the place out, but after two days of waiting, I hadn’t seen her. I was starting to think she wasn’t going to come visit ahead of time after all. So I had someone book my flight home for tomorrow. I can’t believe I ran into her just by coming out for dinner tonight. Looks like I’ll have to get that flight changed as soon as I get back.’

"Sure!" Chloe agreed. ’If someone who knows the area can be my guide, it’ll save me a lot of trouble.’

Listening to their conversation, Ethan felt like he couldn’t get a word in edgewise.

’They’re going to tour Southbend University together tomorrow? No way. I have to go too. I’m not letting those two be alone together.’
