Train Survival: I Can Evolve Everything!

Chapter 48: Windmills or Giants in the Rice Field?

"There's actually such a rule? This is totally scamming me!"

Ye Qiyan felt speechless. The unexpectedly extended stopping time brought both advantages and disadvantages.

The benefit was that at resource-rich stations, more time meant more resources he could collect.

On the flip side, if he encountered extremely dangerous stations, he'd be stuck for a full seven hours before leaving.

["Train system interference is the system's fault. Additional compensation has been provided. We hope Train Conductor Ye Qiyan will continue his efforts."]

"Forget it, I'll just be more careful later."

There was nothing else to be done about it now.

Ye Qiyan shook his head and walked straight to WALL-E, inserting a coin.

[WALL-E, activate]

"Go for it, WALL-E. If we find a treasure chest at this station, I'll get you a brain upgrade."

After watching WALL-E leave the station, Ye Qiyan pressed the door opening button.

Just as he was about to leave, the sound of hooves caught his attention.

A knight in tattered armor came charging toward the train on an emaciated old horse with protruding ribs, wielding a rusted lance.

"An enemy? So soon, but..."

If this was an enemy, they were... pathetically shabby.

After a moment's thought, Ye Qiyan stopped the sentry from firing.

This was a mission station. Based on past experience, the first encounter here would be related to the station's mission.

He let the knight approach.

Stepping off the train, he drew his gun and fired a bullet that landed precisely at the old horse's feet.

Startled, the horse reared and threw its rider.

"Oof!"

The knight's helmet fell off, revealing cardboard padding inside.

So weak.

This was Ye Qiyan's first impression of the knight.

Gaunt face, dark skin, sparse grayish-white beard caked with dirt.

His frail body looked like it could be blown away by the slightest breeze.

Except for those eyes.

Even from a distance, Ye Qiyan could see the fanaticism and determination burning within them.

"Sir... are you alright?"

He wasn't sure how to address the old man, but his appearance suggested he was a real human.

"I'm fine! Oh? You're human? Why did you come out from the dragon's belly? Ah! I understand! You've slain the dragon! Heavens, you've conquered the dragon! You must be a great dragon knight!"

Dragon? Dragon knight?

What nonsense was this?

Ye Qiyan felt completely baffled.

Was this guy insane?

"Master, are you alright?!"

From the same direction, a short, rotund man came wobbling over on a gray donkey.

"Haha, Sancho, it's nothing serious. I offended this dragon knight lord. This must be fate's arrangement, letting me meet a dragon knight before battling the giants!"

Sancho? The name sounded familiar. Ye Qiyan felt he'd heard it somewhere.

"Master Don Quixote, what dragon?"

"That huge black creature ahead! Can't you hear the dragon's roar? Didn't you see it descend from the sky?"

Don Quixote?!

Hearing this name, Ye Qiyan immediately recognized who stood before him.

Don Quixote - a knight lost in ideals and fantasies, the archetype of all failures in the world.

This was actually Don Quixote's world.

Then the short, fat man beside him must be Sancho Panza, the most important supporting character from the novel.

"So the train's stations can include worlds from stories too? I never imagined the protagonist from my childhood readings would appear before me like this."

As Ye Qiyan mused silently, Don Quixote had already gotten up, brushing dirt off his armor to look more like a proper knight.

"Master Don Quixote, that's not a dragon. It's, uh... just some connected houses with strange wheels attached."

"No, that is a dragon. In matters of adventure, you're still a novice..."

The dialogue resembled the book's, except now they debated whether the train was a dragon instead of windmills being giants.

Was he playing the villain's role in this mission station?

Wait - turning around, Ye Qiyan saw thirty-four windmills standing in the rice field ahead.

His sudden appearance had interrupted Don Quixote's first battle.

"My apologies, Dragon Knight. There are long-armed giants ahead awaiting my challenge. After I vanquish them, we shall speak again."

Don Quixote picked up his lance, mounted his old horse, and circled around the train toward the rice field again.

"Master, those aren't giants! They're windmills! The long arms are just their sails!"

Ignoring Sancho's shouts, he charged forward with battle cries.

From the train's roof, Ye Qiyan watched the scene unfold. Just when he expected Don Quixote to be thrown like in the story, the world before him shifted subtly.

Windmills?

No - giants had appeared in the rice field.

"?"

Ye Qiyan rubbed his eyes. When he looked again, the giants had turned back into windmills.

"What the hell?"

He instantly realized something was wrong and hurried back inside the train.

The Pure Cleansing Stone's power eased his discomfort, but what he saw from inside confirmed one thing:

The rice field didn't hold windmills.

It held long-armed giants.

Don Quixote was right?

"Why is this happening?"

This world wasn't as simple as it appeared. Checking his status screen, he saw unexpected text under the mental attribute:

[Mental: 120 (Witness of Truth and Falsehood)]

A mental state he'd never seen before.

What exactly was this mission station's objective?

"Seems I shouldn't underestimate mission stations anymore. Hmm? Is it over?"

In the rice field, Don Quixote was casually tossed aside by a giant.

The moment he fell, the giant transformed back into a windmill.

"God be praised! Didn't I tell you? Those are windmills! Unless someone's got windmills in their head, who wouldn't recognize them?"

"Silence, Sancho!"

As they bickered, Sancho helped Don Quixote remount, and they began retracing their path.

When passing the train, Ye Qiyan - who had been observing - suddenly spoke:

"Don Quixote, are you running away? The giants are still there."

"Don't you want... to become a true knight?"
