"FREEZE."

The moment I heard those words, my body came to a complete stop. I couldn’t even move a single inch.

This was one of the gifts of the Lion Knight — Lion’s Roar.

As the name says, it’s basically a roar similar to a lion’s that had the ability to stop the movement of those who heard it. Similar to a Dragon’s Roar but less terrifying, but still a crazy gift.

By uttering the command "Freeze," the Lion Knight releases sound waves imbued with the gift’s power. Every valid target within a certain range reached by those sound waves has their voluntary physical movement immobilized.

This was what made the Lion Knight such a difficult opponent to fight, because aside from his absurd strength, he could halt your movements. It didn’t matter if you had your ears covered or not, as long as the sound waves produced by his voice came into contact with your body, the gift would still work and paralyze you.

So [Calm Mind] wouldn’t be able to counter it, because it wasn’t a mental attack.

It was a very powerful gift, but it had its own limitations.

"You tried to resist but it was futile, I shall end your repugnant life." The Lion Knight said as he walked closer to me, his obsidian armor rattling with each step.

Ah, man, I really wish I could speak right now.

The Lion Knight raised his sword. "Repent in your next life for siding with that man."

His silver sword then dropped down, slashing towards my neck. It looked like I was really going to get my head cut off.

But when the blade was inches away from severing my neck, black tentacles rose from the ground and launched at the Lion Knight. The Lion Knight’s eyes widened in shock as he was hit by the tentacles and sent flying back.

Just because he could freeze my movements didn’t mean I wouldn’t be able to use my magical abilities.

The Lion Knight spun his body and landed on one knee.

"What kind of power..." He murmured.

At that moment, the foreign force holding me in place disappeared, and I was finally able to move.

"I can finally speak and move, your gift is really quite troublesome." I clenched and unclenched my fist.

If you’re wondering why I could suddenly move again, it was because of another limitation of the Lion Knight’s gift — he couldn’t immobilize the physical movement of someone who wasn’t within a 10-meter radius.

The sound waves could only travel within that range, so I instantly became an invalid target after sending the Lion Knight far away from me. It would’ve been a nightmare if he hadn’t had a range limit and could also stop objects as well, the fight would’ve been over the moment it started.

Another thing was that his effect had a cooldown, but I didn’t know for how long. So I’d have to find out for myself.

"Your brother said you were enough to kill me, but from what I’ve seen, you had to use your own gift to stop me from moving. I thought we were only fighting with our blades." I hung my katana on my shoulder.

The Lion Knight raised himself up with the grace of a knight, and said, "Only a fool would not use everything in their arsenal."

"Come on, no chivalry?"

The Lion Knight’s brown eyes glowed with a brown aura. "There is no chivalry in a fight to the death, only victory matters."

Tsk, chivalry really is dead. If he’d been willing to fight only with swords, I would’ve cheated and backstabbed him with a spike to speed things up, but it seemed there was no other way.

But I kind of understood him. The world back then was nothing less than perilous — people died every day from monsters they couldn’t defeat, and those who could fight the abominations were few in number.

That’s why many cultures from back then went extinct, with no records left of them. Well, this place was a record of a lost era.

And now I was here to destroy the last remaining thing of that era.

"You wield the power of the Abyss, it makes even more sense now." The Lion Knight said as he looked at the tentacles, his gaze turning slightly melancholic before hardening back into his fierce stare.

"Oh, these? They’re mine."

The Abyss he was talking about was a general term used for people who used powers tied to death and the void. And back in those times, those who had awakened such powers weren’t accepted very well.

That was because these were powers related to death, something a mortal shouldn’t wield, and of course, in the wrong hands, it would be a catastrophe. People were scared of death, so they deemed those who wielded such power evil, and were mostly killed on sight.

That’s why there were barely any users of Abyssal powers in this current era, aside from the assassins of the Schatten family, who, somehow, almost every member wielded shadow powers.

"I am not evil like the others, I am different." I said.

"Hah," The Lion Knight snorted. "Who are you trying to fool? An Abyss user is still an Abyss user."

The knight pressed off with his feet and launched himself towards me like a bullet.

I couldn’t let him get too close to me, if I wanted to test the duration of his ability.

A spear formed in my hand and I threw it at him, aiming for his head.

The Lion Knight only did a simple horizontal swing and cut the spear in half. Once he got ten meters away from me, he activated his gift again.

"FREEZE!"

I felt my movements becoming sluggish again, then coming to a complete stop. So I started to count.

’1’

The Lion Knight accelerated as soon as his ability took effect, and crossed the distance between us in a blink, but just before he could get any further, I spread my mana on the ground and raised a huge wall of darkness that obstructed his path.

Instead of cutting through the wall, he simply moved to the side and attacked me again.
