The Eagle Knight’s sword never finished its descent to decapitate me. It stopped inches away from my neck.

Drip.

The Eagle Knight’s eyes widened, and he slowly looked down at his chest, where a huge black spike protruded from it, crimson blood dripping onto the ground.

"H-how—"

The Eagle Knight never managed to finish his question. His sword slipped from his hand and clattered loudly against the ground before he turned to ash.

[You have slain an Apex Common Monster, Eagle Knight of Sidegard.]

I let out a long sigh of relief as the system whispered in my ear, confirming the kill. The fight hadn’t been easy, and I could have died many times, but I still came out on top.

So now, if you’re wondering how I killed the Eagle Knight, I’ll have to explain how his Gift worked.

The Eagle Knight had a Gift called Wraith Form. It allowed its user to turn invisible for a period of time, meaning he couldn’t be seen with the naked eye no matter how hard someone tried.

So now you may be wondering why I wasn’t able to detect him with my darkness circle even though he was stepping inside it. That was because it wasn’t just a normal invisibility ability—he could turn invisible and erase his presence as well.

So, as long as he was invisible, even if he was standing within my darkness circle, I wouldn’t be able to detect him at all, neither through physical movements nor mana. It was an aggravating ability to deal with. Although it seemed a bit overpowered, it had its limits.

First, it only lasted for ten seconds. Second, the ability would deactivate if the Eagle Knight came into physical contact with another being. That explained why whenever I hit him, he became visible before turning invisible again.

Although, for me to be able to hit him, I first had to know where he was.

So how did I do that?

By attaching darkness energy to the Eagle Knight’s body without him noticing.

During our earlier exchange of attacks, before he had even used his ability, I managed to slip a bit of darkness energy onto his armor, wrapping it around a small section and making it look like part of it.

The reason he couldn’t detect the foreign energy on his body was because he was too focused on his brother’s death, the Lion Knight. And yes, some highly intelligent undead could retain their emotions, just like these two. That played a role in killing him.

So yeah, I used that darkness energy as a locator, allowing me to detect him and block all of his attacks.

I was simply a bad matchup for them. That was all there was to it. It just showed how terrifying this Main Story was, and I couldn’t imagine how powerful it could become.

After saying a small prayer for them, I stood up and walked toward the staircase leading to the church’s two large doors. I pressed my hands against them, put some force into the push, and slowly opened them. They creaked loudly.

The inside of the church was different from the one in the real world. The marble walls weren’t crumbling and looked clean. The wooden pews were pristine and untouched by decay, while the massive chandelier that should have been lying on the ground instead hung from the high ceiling, casting a dim light throughout the church.

Another thing I noticed, despite wearing armor and the candles burning throughout the church, was the cold. It was so cold that I could see my breath leaving my mouth, a stark contrast to the scorching weather outside.

The sound of my boots echoed throughout the church as I walked along the central aisle leading to the altar. I eventually came to a stop and looked up.

Someone was kneeling before the altar with their back facing me, their hands clasped together as though offering a prayer. The aura they gave off was nothing short of unsettling, making it difficult to breathe.

It was ironic. A place that was meant to feel sacred and holy instead felt disturbing and unholy.

A few moments later, the figure spoke.

"Welcome... to the Church of Sidegard, O child who bears the stench of The Man Who Writes the Last Page."

It was a calm, soft, and polite feminine voice, yet it carried an icy coldness and distance, with a trace of disdain in those final words.

Her voice echoed through the church, sending chills down my spine for some reason.

The Man Who Writes the Last Page?

What was she talking about? And why... did it sound so familiar?

And what did she mean by stench? I smell quite good, you know.

I opened my mouth.

"I am sorry, Sister, but I do not know what you are talking about."

The woman remained silent for a moment before replying.

"Is that so?"

The candles flickered at her words.

She fell silent again before asking another question.

"Tell me... if you had promised your people salvation, only to bring about their downfall instead... could you ever be forgiven?"

I listened quietly to her words, and for the first time since entering this place, I gave the question genuine thought.

"Forgiveness..."

I let the word linger, as though tasting something long forgotten.

"I think that if you knowingly led them to their deaths, then no. But if you chose the only path you believed could save them and still failed... I don’t think that makes you beyond forgiveness. I think you’re someone who learned, far too late, that good intentions don’t always save lives."

The woman remained silent, as if considering my answer.

Then she spoke.

"You are quite wise for your age."

I smiled faintly.

"I tend to hear that a lot."

I could practically hear Ezio somewhere calling me a liar.

The woman slowly stood and turned around, finally revealing herself.

Standing at 1.9 meters tall with a slender frame and pale skin, she wore layered, tattered grey-and-white nun-like vestments that reached her bare feet, along with a veil that framed her pale, composed, and solemn face beneath her short black hair.

In her right hand, she held a long great scythe by the upper shaft, one that was at least as tall as a grown man.

"For that, I shall grant you a swift death... though I make no promise that it will be painless. After all, your soul bears his stench."

A frown formed on my face as she once again spoke about someone else’s scent clinging to me. I didn’t know what she meant, but I’d probably find out soon...

After defeating her.

The woman before me was Sister Friede—the leader of a party that had promised salvation, only to witness the destruction of everyone they had sworn to protect. The guilt of that day had long since corrupted her.

An undead Greater Monster.
