he aura Sister Friede gave off was nothing but heavy and suffocating. She was a Greater Monster after all, and before she even became a monster, she had been a powerful human from the past.

Oh nah, this was definitely suicide for me, and I knew Ezio would beat my ass if he saw the kind of situation I had gotten myself into.

But I wanted to learn the scythe and level up my Story, even if it brought me to the brink of death, which I would definitely be in.

A long black scythe formed in my hands. I spun the shaft around before taking a stance.

The maid tilted her head slightly to the side, making her veil sway gently, which I somehow found cute.

Focus, Yves, focus.

"A scythe? That’s an interesting choice, child. But do you perhaps even know how to use it?" she asked, her voice soft.

"That’s what I’m here for. I’ll be in your care."

She tilted her head to the side again at my words before walking down the altar steps with her bare feet. Earlier, from afar, I had noticed she seemed to be barefoot, but I thought I was imagining things. Now I had confirmed that she was actually barefoot.

So I couldn’t help but ask,

"Do you not feel cold?"

"Cold?" she asked.

"Yes, because you have no shoes." I pointed at her pale feet.

She looked down at her feet before looking back at me.

"No. I’m an undead. I don’t feel cold... but I feel comfortable this way."

"Ahh, forget I asked."

I blinked once, and Sister Friede’s figure blurred from the stairs, appearing right in front of me with her scythe already midway through a swing aimed at my neck.

She moved so fast that even with my darkness circle active, I wasn’t able to detect her in time.

The hairs on my body stood on end as I felt an overwhelming sense of danger.

At the same time, frost-like energy coated the blade of her scythe, drawing a white-blue arc through the air.

Mana surged wildly through my body, and with as much speed as I could muster, I tilted my head to the side. Her scythe sliced through the air inches from my face, the freezing wind from the frost slapping against my skin.

Even though I dodged, my hair wasn’t as fast. Several strands were cut, instantly freezing before falling to the ground.

I gripped my scythe and swung its blade upward, aiming to cut the shaft of her weapon in half, but—

Clang!

The shaft didn’t even budge as my blade struck it, sending sparks flying.

It was as hard as rock.

I hooked my scythe’s blade around the shaft and tried to pull her weapon from her hands, but her grip was too strong.

The next moment, she twisted her wrist, spinning her scythe and breaking our weapons apart.

She took a few steps back, her bare feet making almost no sound against the floor. Then she leaned forward, blurred to my left, and slashed toward my side.

I flicked my scythe with both hands and brought it across my body to block the attack, which sent me skidding back several meters.

"So powerful."

I looked at my hands, which were trembling from blocking just that single attack.

The woman didn’t give me time to recover. She dashed forward again in a zigzag pattern, crossing the distance between us in the span of a second.

Her slender fingers gripped the shaft tightly as she dragged the blade of her scythe along the floor before slashing upward to sever my left arm, the blade tracing a wide arc of frost.

My hands blurred together with my scythe as I met her attack head-on, producing sparks that briefly illuminated the dim church.

Sister Friede’s attacks were deadly. Every single one was meant to slice me into pieces and kill me. Her scythe skills had been honed to perfection. Her swings were not only precise and perfectly calculated but also beautiful.

Each completed swing left behind a graceful arc of frost that was mesmerizing to watch.

Beautiful... but deadly.

The gap between us had already been obvious from the beginning, as I was forced to defend instead of attack.

I ducked beneath a slash that would’ve decapitated me and swung my scythe low, aiming for a sweep.

Sister Friede leaped backward to avoid it. The moment her feet touched the ground, she dashed forward again, giving me no room to breathe, and slashed toward my chest. I was still crouching and couldn’t dodge, so instead I summoned a wall of darkness to block the attack and buy myself enough time to stand.

The instant Sister Friede’s scythe touched the dark wall, white-blue frost spread across it and froze it solid.

I jumped backward, widening the distance between us.

"It now makes sense why you were able to defeat my brothers despite being weaker than them—you wield a dark power."

Sister Friede sounded as though she had finally confirmed something she had been wondering about.

I rested my scythe on my shoulder.

"I was just lucky that they underestimated me, and my powers countered theirs, so the odds were on my side," I said.

I remained silent for a moment, and since she wasn’t attacking, I spoke again.

"Are you not angry that I killed your brothers? From what I’ve seen, you haven’t shown any emotion over their deaths. I know you felt them die, yet you didn’t help them."

Sister Friede fell silent, and only the faint hum of frost clinging to her blade echoed through the church.

I couldn’t see her eyes beneath the veil, but I could feel her gaze resting on me.

After a few moments, her pale lips parted.

"I am no longer human. Therefore, I am no longer swayed by human emotions. In addition, their souls were gone from the very beginning. Those were merely echoes."

"That’s quite cold, even if they were echoes," I said.

Sister Friede raised her scythe.

"You said you wanted to learn the scythe?" she asked.

"Yeah," I answered cautiously.

"Try your best to stay alive."

She brought her scythe down, and a cloud of frost engulfed her figure.

"What are you doing—"

When the frost settled, Sister Friede was gone.

No trace. Nothing.

Every alarm in my body went off.

I spread my mana, trying to detect her, but—

The next moment, my vision turned upside down.

"Huh... why am I—"

Then I saw my own body still standing.

What confused me even more was that my head was missing, and a fountain of blood gushed from my severed neck.

"Ah..."

I finally realized what had happened.

My head rolled across the floor, and the last thing I saw before my vision blurred and darkness consumed me was Sister Friede standing beside my decapitated body.

I died.
