Chapter 276: Chapter Two Hundred And Seventy Five

The hooded man saw her approaching. He knew he could not defeat her in a fair fight, especially with a bleeding eye.

He quickly reached his hand deep inside his cloak. He pulled out a small, tightly tied leather pouch.

He squeezed the pouch and threw his arm forward violently.

A cloud of fine, sparkling, purple powder exploded from the pouch. He threw it at Camilla’s face.

Camilla saw the powder coming. Her reflexes activated instantly. She quickly raised her left arm, using her sleeve to cover her nose and mouth to block the strange powder.

But it was too late.

The fine purple dust moved too fast. It hung heavily in the air around her head. She had already inhaled a small breath of it before her arm could fully cover her face.

Instantly, a strange burning heat flooded directly into her lungs. The heat traveled straight up into her brain.

Camilla staggered backward. Her knees suddenly felt weak and useless.

Her fingers lost their strength. The dagger slipped out of her hand.

Clatter.

The weapon fell to the floor.

Camilla reached up with both hands and held her head. The room began to spin wildly around her. The edges of her vision turned blurry and soft. Her heart began to beat very fast, thumping a strange rhythm against her ribs.

She shook her head side to side, trying desperately to clear her vision. She tried to force her sharp mind to take control. She tried to get her head back in the game.

But it was completely futile. The powder was too strong. It bypassed her logic entirely and attacked her senses directly.

The hooded man stood a few feet away, holding his bleeding eye. He watched her stagger and drop her weapon.

He let out a low chuckle.

"What did you do to me?" Camilla asked. Her voice was weak, breathy, and shaking. She could barely keep her balance.

The hooded man tried to stand up straighter. He looked at her helpless state.

"You are intoxicated with sundew powder," the man answered slowly, his voice rough with pain.

He explained the aim of the dust.

"It is a very rare drug," the man said. "It lets you see what your heart truly desires. It brings your deepest, most hidden feelings to the surface. It makes you feel safe."

He gripped his dagger tightly in his hand.

"It lets you lose your guard completely," the man finished, stepping closer to her. "And that gives me the perfect leverage to kill you."

Camilla squeezed her eyes shut. She shook her head again. She fought the drug with all her willpower.

"I don’t desire anything," Camilla told herself in her mind. "I am an assassin. I desire nothing but survival."

She slowly opened her eyes. She tried to look at the hooded man. She tried to look at the broken crates.

But the warehouse was gone. The dusty air was gone.

All she could see was Damon.

She saw Damon standing in front of her. She saw his broad shoulders. She saw his dark brown eyes looking at her with deep, warm affection. She saw him reaching his strong arms out to hold her. The vision was so clear, warm, and comforting. She felt a massive wave of love wash over her entire body.

Camilla stumbled forward slightly, reaching her hands out toward the empty air.

Camilla thought to herself, her mind fighting a desperate, losing battle against the powerful drug.

"No, no," Camilla thought frantically. She felt a deep, genuine panic rising in her chest. She stared at the beautiful, comforting vision of her husband.

"Why Damon?" Camilla asked herself in her mind. Her internal voice was shocked and terrified. "Why do I see only him? Why is he the one my heart desires?"

Near the front doors, Damon was still fighting.

He was swinging his broadsword, pushing two guards back toward the wall. Even in the middle of the loud, chaotic battle, Damon’s secret ability remained active.

He heard Camilla’s thoughts perfectly clearly in his head. He heard her frantic, confused questions. He heard the deep, helpless terror in her internal voice.

Why Damon? Why do I see only him?

Damon’s panic rose.

He turned his head sharply. He looked toward the center of the warehouse.

He saw Camilla standing there. She was holding her head with both hands. She was staggering weakly on her feet, looking lost and vulnerable. Her dagger was lying uselessly on the floor.

He saw the hooded man stepping very close to her, raising his dagger high into the air, fully preparing to plunge the blade into her unprotected chest.

Damon felt fear crash into his own chest.

"She’s in danger," Damon panicked silently in his mind.

He did not care about the guards attacking him. He did not care about his own safety. He had to reach her immediately.

Damon spun around. He looked at his aide.

"Kade!" Damon shouted loudly, his deep voice booming over the sound of clashing steel. "They are all yours!"

Kade swung his sword, blocking an incoming attack. He understood the General’s urgent command.

"With pleasure," Kade replied firmly.

Kade stepped forward aggressively. He swung his sword in a wide arc, forcing the remaining guards to step backward. He deliberately moved his body to block the guards, creating a clear, open path for Damon to run through the center of the room.

Damon did not wait. He dropped his broadsword onto the floor. He rushed forward.

He ran across the floor as fast as his legs could carry him. He saw Camilla swaying weakly. He saw her fighting whatever strange drug she had been hit with.

He saw the hooded man standing right in front of her. The man was twirling his sharp dagger in his hand, adjusting his grip, ready to plunge the blade deep into Camilla’s heart.

Damon realized he was too far away. He couldn’t get there in time to block the dagger.

As he ran, Damon looked to his right. He saw a heavy wooden crate sitting near a broken pillar.

Damon reached out his hands. He grabbed the edges of the heavy crate. He did not break his stride. He lifted the box off the floor with his raw physical strength.

He aimed carefully at the hooded man’s head.

With a violent heave, Damon threw the heavy crate through the air.

The heavy box flew across the room.

CRASH!

The wooden crate smashed violently into the hooded man’s head. The force of the impact was overwhelming. The wood broke into several sharp pieces upon contact.

The hooded man cried out in sharp agony. He stumbled heavily to the side, losing his balance. His dagger swung wildly through the air, missing Camilla.

The man fell to his knees. He grabbed his head. Blood immediately started pouring from a deep cut on his forehead, mixing with the blood from his slashed eye.
