The damp pine needles crunching beneath Marcus’s boots were the only sound in the dark woods. Behind him, the forty-seven refugees moved like shadows, stepping carefully over exposed roots and fallen branches.
Kyle walked near the front of the line, his hand resting lightly against his side where his ribs still ached. The digital display floating beside his vision had finally vanished, but the memory of those stats hung heavy in his mind.
He glanced back at Yua. She was walking steadily now, her skin flush with color again after drinking his blood. Her dark eyes met his, and a faint blush touched her cheeks before she quickly looked away toward the dense treeline.
"So," Kyle said, dropping his voice low so the refugees behind them wouldn’t hear. "A pureblood vampire."
Yua’s shoulders tensed slightly. She adjusted the dark cloak wrapped around her shoulders, pulling it tighter against the mountain wind. "I didn’t lie to you, Kyle. I just... didn’t think it mattered in the lower sectors. Most people there shoot vampires on sight."
"I’m an F-rank demon with dark flames," Kyle said with a dry, quiet chuckle. "I’m not exactly in a position to judge."
"Your blood..." Yua whispered, her eyes flickering back to his wrapped wrist. "It tasted... strange. Rich. Heavy. It didn’t just fill my blood core; it felt like it bound something inside me."
[That would be the auxiliary bond link,] Snow chimed in Kyle’s head. [By feeding her your high-density vital fluid while your demon core was active, you permanently stabilized her blood core. Her system is now partially tethered to yours.]
Before Kyle could ask Snow what that meant for Yua long-term, a deep, raspy whisper reverberated through his skull, completely bypassing Snow’s interface.
"How touching."
Kyle froze in his tracks, his hand instinctively going to his chest. The amber crystal under his shirt didn’t flare, but a sudden, icy chill spread through his ribcage.
"You feed the vampire your own life while the seal crumbles," the ancient root-deer entity murmured inside his mind, its voice sounding like dry bone dragging across stone. "You fight the Council. You run through the dirt. And for what, little demon? A handful of weak mortals who will starve in these woods?"
’Shut up,’ Kyle thought fiercely, clenching his fists until his knuckles turned white. ’I told you to stay out of my head.’
"I am inside your bones, Kyle Conner," the deer purred, its voice echoing with a low, mocking laugh. "You cannot shut a door on the house you are built in. The Grand Duchess knows it. The Council knows it. Every step you take draws the rot closer to these woods."
"Kyle?" Elara’s voice broke through the dark whisper. She had dropped back from the front of the line, her golden eyes fixed on his pale face. "You’re doing it again. Your chest."
Kyle forced a slow breath out, forcing the dark presence back into the depths of the Intercept Seal. "I’m fine. Just... the entity."
Elara’s expression darkened. She looked around at the towering pines closing in on them. "We’re almost at the ravine. Half a mile through the thicket. Once we get inside the old sanctuary, the anti-tracking wards should block my mother’s scrying spells."
"It’s not your mother I’m worried about," Kyle muttered, wiping a drop of cold sweat from his forehead. "It’s the Council."
Three miles back, at the edge of the mountain ridge where the utility portal had collapsed, the pine trees were already dying.
Needles turned gray and dropped to the earth in heaps. The moss on the rocks withered into black dust under the boots of four figures clad in obsidian light-armor.
These were not standard spire guards. They wore high-collared leather coats stitched with purple runic thread, their faces concealed behind smooth, featureless silver masks.
Lady Vespera’s Shadow-Stalkers.
The lead stalker knelt in the pine needles, dipping two gloved fingers into a patch of dark, dried blood on a rock—the spot where Kyle had bitten his own wrist to feed Yua.
The silver mask tilted upward as a purple glow flared behind the eye slits.
"High-density demonic fluid," the stalker spoke, his voice layered and metallic, echoing like two people speaking at once. "Mixed with pureblood vampire essence. The target was here less than twenty minutes ago."
Behind him, three more stalkers melted out of the shadows between the trees, their short-swords drawn and humming with void magic.
"The refugees are slowing them down," a second stalker said, pulling a glowing purple compass from his belt. The needle inside wasn’t pointing north; it was spinning wildly before locking directly toward the south ravine. "Forty-seven unawakened leave a heavy trail of dark saturation. We can eradicate them before they reach the ravine walls."
"No," the lead stalker commanded, standing up and wiping the blood from his glove. "Lady Vespera’s orders were explicit. We do not engage the boy directly until Arch-Mage Oberon’s containment barrier is positioned. We herd them."
He raised his hand, signaling the dark mages behind him.
"Signal General Ignatius’s forward vanguard. Tell them the prey is heading into the sunken ravine. Tell them to bring the iron-drake hounds."
The entrance to the sanctuary was nothing more than a narrow crack in a massive granite cliff, hidden behind a thick curtain of frozen ivy.
Elara pushed the vines aside, revealing a dark, descending stone tunnel that smelled of old dust and dry earth. "Inside. Quickly. Marcus, get the elderly in first."
Marcus nodded, ushering the exhausted refugees through the narrow gap. They filed in quietly, their faces pale with fatigue, but their eyes filled with quiet relief as they stepped out of the freezing mountain wind.
Kyle stood near the entrance, watching the dark woods behind them. The silence of the forest felt wrong. No owls. No wind through the needles. Just an uncomfortable, heavy quiet.
"They’re close," Yua whispered, standing beside him. Her crimson eyes glinted faintly in the shadows of the ivy. "I can smell the copper in the air. Magic... and something else. Hounds."
Kyle checked his system status with a quick thought.

His energy had fully recovered thanks to the shop potion, but he knew numbers didn’t mean anything if a Council army descended on a narrow ravine.
"How many people can this sanctuary hold?" Kyle asked Elara as she stepped back out to help Yua clear their footprints in the dirt.
"It was built during the First Council War," Elara said, her hands glowing with faint orange fire as she melted the tracks in the snow. "It has underground living quarters, a natural spring, and three escape tunnels that lead out to the lower neutral valleys. It can hold a hundred people easily."
"And the wards?"
"They’re ancient, but they work," Elara replied, pointing to faint, carved runes etched into the granite archway above the crack. "They disguise mana signatures. As long as nobody casts high-grade spells inside, the Council’s scrying orbs will see nothing but solid rock."
"Good," Kyle said. "Because I don’t think we’re going to get another ten-second window if they catch us again."
*"You think stone can hide you?"* the root-deer’s voice whispered again, softer this time, like wind whistling through an empty skull. *"The high chancellor carries the Scales of Judgment, boy. He does not search for mana. He searches for weight. And the weight in your chest is heavy enough to sink a continent."*
Kyle squeezed his eyes shut, forcing the voice down. ’Snow, can you suppress the entity’s voice?’
[Negative, Kyle,] Snow reported, her tone returning to its standard analytical cadence. [The entity is using the physical structure of the Intercept Seal inside your ribcage to vibrate your auditory nerves directly. It isn’t sending a magic signal; it is physically speaking through your own bones.]
’Fantastic,’ Kyle thought bitterly.
"Kyle?" Yua reached out, her cool fingers lightly touching his elbow. "You’re gritting your teeth so hard they’re going to break."
Kyle opened his eyes, looking down at her. "I’m fine. Let’s get inside before whatever’s out there catches up."
They stepped through the narrow crack, leaving the frozen ivy to fall back into place.
The tunnel led down into a massive, cavernous hall illuminated by glowing blue crystal veins embedded in the stone ceiling. The air was warm, heated by natural geothermal vents deep below the floor.
The forty-seven refugees had already scattered across the stone floor, collapsing onto old wooden benches or gathering around a central stone well to drink clean water. Marcus was sitting on a stone step, holding a wooden cup, his hands finally stopping their violent shaking.
Elara walked to the center of the hall, kneeling beside a raised stone altar covered in dusty brass levers. She wiped the dust away with her sleeve and pulled the primary lever down.
A low, heavy grinding sound echoed through the cavern as a massive slab of solid granite slid shut inside the entrance tunnel, sealing the narrow crack entirely. The blue light from the ceiling crystals flared bright, then settled into a steady, soothing pulse.
"We’re locked in," Elara breathed out, leaning her head back against the altar. "The outer wards are active."
Yua sat down on the edge of the stone well, dipping her hands into the clear water. She looked up at Kyle, who was standing near the sealed stone door, his eyes fixed on his own hands.
"What’s our next move?" Yua asked softly. "We can’t stay in this cave forever."
Kyle looked at his hands, then at the amber light glowing faintly through his torn shirt.
"We don’t stay," Kyle said, his voice hard. "We rest for six hours. We let the refugees recover. And then we use those escape tunnels to get out of Council territory entirely."
"And where do we go?" Elara asked, looking up from the altar.
Kyle met her golden eyes. "Somewhere far enough that the Grand Duchess and her Council have to think twice before following us."
Deep in his chest, beneath the bone and the flesh, the ancient root-deer let out one last, quiet laugh that faded into the dark.
"Run then, little demon. Run as far as your legs will carry you. The root always grows."
