The heavy stone slab sealing the cavern entrance cut off the mountain chill, replacing it with the humid, earthy warmth of the underground spring.
While Elara moved among the refugees, distributing old wool blankets found in the sanctuary’s storage chests, Kyle walked toward the far side of the cavern where the blue crystal light was dimmest. He sank down onto a wide stone ledge, his back hitting the wall with a heavy thud.
The exhaustion hit him all at once. The potion from Elara had restored his stats, but it hadn’t done a thing for the mental strain of having an ancient root-deer trying to pilot his skull while fighting off an elite guard captain.
A soft rustle of fabric made him look up.
Yua was standing a few feet away. The harsh, bloodthirsty glow in her eyes from earlier was completely gone, replaced by a soft, almost hesitant warmth. She looked like the girl he’d held in his arms back in the lower sectors—except now, her dark hair fell over her shoulders in soft waves, and her skin possessed a smooth, pearlescent sheen from the demonic essence she’d absorbed from him.
"Mind if I sit?" she asked softly.
Kyle pulled his legs over to make room on the ledge. "It’s a free cave."
She sat close beside him—close enough that he could feel the radiating warmth of her body. For a pureblood vampire who usually felt like a walking corpse, the heat coming off her right now was intoxicating.
Without a word, Yua reached out and took his right hand—the one with the bandaged wrist where she’d bitten him. She didn’t press down; her fingers just gently traced the edge of the cloth.
"It still hurts, doesn’t it?" she murmured, looking up at him through her lashes.
"I’ve had worse," Kyle said, a faint grin touching his lips. "Besides, you were starving. I wasn’t going to let my girl turn into dust because I was stingy with a little blood."
Yua’s lips parted, a faint blush creeping up her neck. She squeezed his hand, her thumb rubbing soft circles against his knuckles. "You’re an idiot, Kyle Conner. Do you have any idea what happens when a pureblood drinks directly from a demon’s vein like that? Especially a demon who’s marked her?"
Kyle tilted his head, looking down at her. "Snow mentioned something about an auxiliary bond link. Care to translate that into plain English?"
Yua leaned in closer, her cheek resting against his shoulder. The faint, sweet scent of night-blooming jasmine drifted off her skin, completely washing away the smell of copper and ash.
"It means my blood core is tied to yours now," she whispered, her breath warm against his neck. "When you’re hurt, I feel it. When your heart races..." She slid her hand up his arm, her palm resting gently over his chest, right beside the amber crystal. "...I feel this, too. You saved my life, Kyle. Again."
Kyle looked at her, his expression softening. He raised his free hand, his fingers gently tucking a strand of dark hair behind her ear before cupping her cheek. "We save each other. That’s how this works."
Yua closed her eyes, leaning into his touch with a quiet, cat-like sigh. The feral monster that had shattered Captain Vane’s broadsword with her bare hands was completely gone, replaced by the woman who looked at him like he was the only thing keeping the ceiling from falling down.
She turned her head slightly, kissing the inside of his palm before looking up at his eyes. "When we get out of these mountains... when we’re finally somewhere safe... you owe me a real meal. One that doesn’t involve me biting your arm in a filthy forest."
Kyle let out a low laugh, pulling her a little tighter against his side. "Deal. Whatever you want."
"I’m holding you to that," she murmured, resting her head back on his chest.
Kyle rested his chin on her hair, his eyes drifting over to the blue system interface hovering quietly at the edge of his field of vision.

The numbers were solid, but Kyle knew they were running out of time.
Outside, the silence of the ravine was shattered.
*BOOM!*
A massive shockwave hit the granite cliff face above the sanctuary, sending a shower of dust and small pebbles cascading down from the cavern ceiling. The blue crystals embedded in the stone flickered violently, turning a deep, warning purple.
Elara snapped to her feet near the altar, her palms instantly igniting with orange fire. "They found us!"
The refugees screamed, scrambling back toward the rear of the cavern as the stone floor beneath their feet began to vibrate with heavy, rhythmic thuds.
Kyle stood up, pulling Yua with him. His face hardened instantly, all warmth vanishing into pure combat focus. "Snow, report!"
[Warning!] Snow’s voice rang in his head. [High-density mana signatures detected directly above the sanctuary! The outer stealth wards have been dismantled by high-tier dispel magic!]
*CRACK!*
The massive granite slab sealing the entrance didn’t just open—it exploded inward. Heavy stone shrapnel flew across the tunnel, slamming into the cavern walls.
Through the dust and billowing gray smoke, three figures stepped into the cavern.
At the front was **General Ignatius**, his massive brass plate armor glowing cherry-red from the sheer heat emanating from his body. His bearded face was twisted into a cruel grin, and the massive war-hammer in his hand was trailing sparks across the stone floor.
To his left stood **Lady Vespera**, her black silk dress fluttering around her as four silver-masked Shadow-Stalkers melted out of the shadows behind her.
And on the right, floating a few inches off the ground, was **Arch-Mage Oberon**, his glowing crystal orb spinning rapidly as it mapped every corner of the room.
"Found the rats," Ignatius rumbled, his voice like grinding boulders. He pointed his war-hammer straight at Kyle. "By order of the Clover Council, all unawakened are to be purged, and the demon host is to be subdued for extraction!"
"Not going to happen, big guy," Kyle growled.
He didn’t hesitate.
[Transformation]
[Consuming 600 Demon Energy...]
A wave of intense, dark energy erupted from Kyle’s core. Black demonic scales surfaced across his skin—the [Demon Scales] hardening his defense—and his eyes flared with a lethal, crimson light. His right leg, permanently infused by the [Abyssal Talon Manifest], lengthened slightly, dark shadow-essence wrapping around his boot like jagged armor. All of his stats instantly doubled.
"Yua, with me!" Kyle barked. "Elara, cover the refugees and watch the arch-mage!"
"Got it!" Elara yelled, launching a barrage of dense fireballs straight at Oberon to keep the mage busy.
"On your flank!" Yua called out.
[Crimson Step]
Yua vanished in a flash of red mist, reappearing instantly on Lady Vespera’s right side. Her fingers flexed, activating **[Blood Edge]**. Two high-density crimson glass blades materialized in her hands, slicing downward toward Vespera’s neck.
Vespera’s eyes narrowed. "Fast. But predictable."
Two Shadow-Stalkers leaped in front of Vespera, their void-swords crossing to block Yua’s strike. Sparks flew as the crimson blood-blades collided with the void steel, the shockwave pushing the stalkers back two steps.
Meanwhile, Kyle closed the distance on General Ignatius in the blink of an eye.
**[Light Combat Skill: Basic]** combined with the baseline +15% movement speed from his **[Abyssal Talon Manifest]** made him a black streak across the cavern floor.
He ducked under a massive, sweeping blow from Ignatius’s flaming war-hammer. The heat scorched the air above Kyle’s head, but Kyle planted his left foot, spinning on his heel, and drove his right leg straight into Ignatius’s brass-plated ribs.
*BOOM!*
The **[Abyssal Talon Manifest]** hit with horrifying force. The passive effect ignored 25% of the general’s physical defense, and a dark, ghostly mark—**[Soul Rend]**—flashed onto Ignatius’s armor.
The massive general grunted in genuine surprise as he was forced back three full steps, the brass plate over his ribs dented deep.
"Impudent bug!" Ignatius roared, raising his hammer to slam it into the ground for an area-of-effect fire shockwave.
As the hammer swung down toward Kyle’s leg, the passive proc triggered: **[Abyssal Reflex]**!
A 20% chance burst to life. A spectral shadow claw erupted automatically from Kyle’s right leg, countering the hammer mid-swing. The shadow claw slashed across Ignatius’s exposed forearm, dealing 120% damage and inflicting **[Hemorrhage]**. Blood spurted from the general’s arm as dark energy began seeping into his flesh.
"Kyle! Behind you!" Yua’s voice echoed.
She was already moving. Seeing two Shadow-Stalkers trying to flank Kyle from the dim corners of the cave, Yua triggered her third skill:
**[Sanguine Veil]**
A dome of swirling, high-density blood expanded around Kyle, absorbing the kinetic impact of the stalkers’ thrown void-daggers before they could touch his back. The daggers bounced off the blood shield, harmlessly clattering to the stone.
Kyle didn’t waste the opening Yua had bought him. He thrust both palms forward, tapping into his dark essence.
**[Dark Flames (Lv 5): Divergence Flames]**
[Consuming 200 Demon Energy...]
Pitch-black flames erupted from both of Kyle’s hands. Instead of shooting in a straight line, the flames split into two spiraling dragons of dark fire, curving around Ignatius’s heavy defense and slamming straight into the four Shadow-Stalkers behind him.
The stalkers screamed as the first great demon’s flames consumed their void armor, burning straight through their magic wards.
"Calculations complete," Arch-Mage Oberon’s cold voice echoed from above. He raised his floating orb, ignoring Elara’s fireballs which were dissipating against a blue mana barrier. "The boy’s core output is rising. Proceeding with Tier-6 Spatial Lock."
A massive, glowing magic circle expanded across the entire ceiling of the cavern. The air instantly grew heavy—so heavy that the stone beneath Kyle’s boots began to crack.
[Warning!] Snow yelled. [Spatial lockdown active! Shadow Walk and teleportation skills disabled within the cavern!]
Kyle gritted his teeth, his transformed demon form straining against the crushing pressure. He looked across the smoky cavern. Ignatius was bleeding from the [Hemorrhage], two stalkers were down from the [Dark Flames], but Oberon and Vespera were still completely unharmed, and the spatial lock was pinning them down.
Yua landed lightly beside Kyle, her crimson blades humming, her breath coming in quick hitches as she leaned her shoulder against his. "Space is locked. I can’t use Crimson Step anymore."
"Then we don’t dodge," Kyle said, his eyes glowing dark red as black flames licked his knuckles. He grabbed Yua’s hand, locking his fingers with hers. "We break through."
