The damp stone of the rear escape tunnel gave way to soft, pine-needle-covered earth after nearly forty minutes of silent marching.
The air outside the subterranean passage was noticeably warmer, hinting at the vast, low-lying basin known as the Shadow Ridge Valleys. Miles behind them, the snow-capped spires of the Clover Council Domain sat buried in a thick blanket of twilight mist, unaware that their quarry had officially slipped beyond the perimeter of their ancient jurisdiction.
Kyle walked near the head of the procession, one arm wrapped around Yua’s waist as she helped balance his lingering fatigue. Every few paces, his boots sank into the damp moss, the natural scent of wet soil and alpine cedar washing away the bitter tang of ozone and sulfur that had clung to his clothes since the hell dump.
"By ’new home,’ you mean a temporary base, right?" Kyle asked, looking over at Elara as she paused near an overgrown stone marker to inspect the terrain. "Because last time I checked, none of us are planning on spending the rest of our lives hiding in caves on this realm. We still have to find a way back to Planet Kraken."
Elara wiped a smear of pine sap from her cheek, her golden eyes reflecting the soft, bioluminescent moss clinging to the nearby oak trunks. "Obviously it’s temporary. I’m not trading my mother’s suffocating spire for a mud hut in the neutral valleys forever. But Planet Kraken is three dimensional sectors away, Kyle. The off-world warp gates in the Clover Spire are heavily guarded now, especially after what we pulled in the courtyard. If we want a gate that can pierce interplanetary atmosphere without triggering a Council lockdown, we need an unregistered ley-line conduit."
"And there’s one down in the valley?" Yua asked softly, her crimson eyes scanning the dense underbrush ahead. Her pureblood senses were fully sharp again, picking up the distant rustle of small forest game and the rhythmic hum of wild mana flowing through the valley’s root systems.
"There used to be an old smugglers’ outpost near the obsidian falls," Elara explained, setting off down a winding dirt path that cut through the ancient trees. "It was run by off-world merchant guilds before the Council annexed the upper territory. If the ancient transit array down there is still operational, we can align the coordinates for Planet Kraken’s outer orbit. But we need a high-density power core to jump-start the gate."
Kyle raised his right hand, staring down at his dark-stained knuckles. "How high-density?"
"High enough that your dark flames won’t be enough on their own," Elara said honestly, glancing back at him. "We’ll need to harvest a raw mana crystal from an apex beast in the lower ridge, or... tap whatever is sitting inside your chest."
*"An excellent proposition,"* the root-deer’s rasping voice echoed instantly in the quiet chambers of Kyle’s skull, light as a autumn breeze sliding over dry leaves. *"Offer my heart to the gate, little demon. See if the cosmic threads do not tear you to ribbons before you ever touch the skies of Kraken."*
’Shut up,’ Kyle thought back, his jaw tightening as he forced the entity’s presence down into the depths of the Intercept Seal.
Beside him, Yua felt his fingers twitch against her waist. She leaned her head against his shoulder, her breath warm against his neck. "Ignore it, Kyle. We’ll find a beast core. We don’t need to give that thing another inch."
Kyle looked down into her deep red eyes, his expression softening as he pulled her slightly closer. "Yeah. We’ll find a beast."
Behind them, Marcus and the forty-seven refugees moved in a disciplined, quiet line. The terror that had gripped them in the Spire’s iron cage had faded, replaced by a quiet, collective determination. They were unawakened humans, far from their home sectors, but seeing Kyle and Yua fight off the Council’s elite vanguard had given them something they hadn’t possessed in weeks: trust.
"Marcus," Kyle called back, slowing his pace so the older man could catch up. "How are the people holding up?"
Marcus adjusted the heavy leather strap of a scavenged guard pack on his shoulder, giving Kyle a weary but genuine smile. "Better than we have any right to be, son. A few twisted ankles and a lot of empty stomachs, but nobody’s complaining. We saw what you did back there in the cavern. You broke an Arch-Mage’s spell with your bare hands. If you say there’s a gate at the bottom of this ridge that can get us off this rock, we’ll walk until our boots rot off."
"We’ll get you back," Kyle said firmly. "Planet Kraken might be chaotic, but it’s vast enough that the Clover Council can’t stretch their fingers over every sector. Once we get through the portal, you’ll be free."
Marcus nodded, his eyes shining with quiet gratitude before he dropped back to keep the line orderly.
By the time the midnight moon reached its highest point, the dense pine forest began to give way to massive, towering obsidian cliff faces. The sound of rushing water filled the air, a roaring thunder that vibrated straight through the soles of their boots.
They emerged onto a wide, rocky plateau overlooking the Obsidian Falls. A massive column of dark, shimmering water cascaded down a three-hundred-foot cliff into a vast, misty basin below. Tucked directly behind the roaring curtain of water was a massive, arching structure made of ancient, brass-bound stone—the off-world transit gate.
"There it is," Elara said, stepping to the edge of the plateau and looking down at the ancient ruins embedded in the cliff face. "The Smugglers’ Conduit."
However, as they drew closer to the edge, Yua suddenly stopped, her grip on Kyle’s arm tightening so hard her fingernails nearly bit through his jacket. Her crimson eyes narrowed, her pupils shrinking to narrow slits.
"Kyle," she whispered, her voice dropping into a dangerous, low hiss. "We’re not alone."
[Alert!] Snow’s voice chimed sharply inside Kyle’s mind, a yellow warning window flashing across his field of vision. [Multiple biological signatures detected in the basin below the falls! Energy readings indicate a high-density territorial monster group!]
Kyle stepped to the cliff edge, using his **[Kirlin Eyes]** to pierce the thick mist rising from the roaring basin below.
Lying around the base of the ancient brass gate were five massive creatures. They looked like oversized panthers made of carved obsidian stone, their tails ending in heavy, crystal-tipped spikes that pulsed with a deep, violet light.
**[Target Identified: Obsidian Spine-Stalkers (A-Rank Territorial Beasts)]**
**Quantity:** 5
**Status:** Resting / Guarding Ley-Line Conduit
**Core Quality:** High-Density Spatial Mana
"Obsidian Spine-Stalkers," Elara muttered, her face turning pale as she leaned over the ledge. "They nest near dormant gates to feed on the leaking ambient spatial energy. Their cores are exactly what we need to power the conduit..."
"...but taking down five A-rank beasts while keeping forty-seven people safe isn’t going to be clean," Kyle finished her sentence, his eyes calculating as he looked down at the beasts.
He looked at Yua, whose crimson blades were already faintly materializing around her fingers, her pureblood vampire instincts responding to the presence of high-tier prey. Then he looked at Elara, whose hands were already warming with orange fire.
"We don’t need to kill all five at once," Kyle said, his voice cold and focused as he brought up his system combat interface. "We lure the dominant alpha away from the gate, harvest its core, and use the spatial blast from the gate’s activation to scare off the rest."
Yua turned to him, a dangerous, beautiful smile touching her lips as she leaned in, her soft cheek brushing against his. "And who gets to be the bait?"
Kyle looked down at his right leg, the dark shadow-essence of the [Abyssal Talon Manifest] swirling softly around his boot.
"I’ll pull the alpha," Kyle said, turning to kiss Yua softly on the lips before stepping toward the edge of the drop. "You two cover the refugees and get the gate’s manual alignment levers ready. Once that core is in the socket, we’re leaving this realm behind."
Yua watched him with shining eyes, touching her lips where he had just kissed her, her blood core humming with anticipation. "Don’t keep us waiting, Kyle. Planet Kraken is a long trip."
Kyle didn’t answer with words. He gave them a sharp nod, let out a slow breath, and threw himself over the edge of the three-hundred-foot cliff, falling like a dark meteor toward the roaring basin below.
