’Did he just...?’

Varek narrowed his eyes.

For the first time since the battle started, he stopped thinking about Lucian’s strange abilities and his gaze moved to the girl standing beside him.

A Human.

A Human with no power at all.

Why was she even here...?

The blood spear was not even aimed at her. At best, it would have only scratched her a little, then...

Why did Lucian, who had finally pushed Varek into a corner, immediately stop his pursuit and create multiple barriers around her?

Not to mention the absurdly pure Demonic Blood in his body. A Blood-Altered Human did not have blood that pure, not to mention it was clearly blood belonging to a High-Level Demon. A Human wouldn’t be able to absorb it even if they diluted it.

So the more logical explanation was that a High-Ranking Demon had taken over the Human’s body.

Maybe the Demon had been targeting the Human’s body for a long while?

Maybe it was something else entirely.

Varek did not care.

What mattered was that all this while, he thought Lucian was a Demon.

Why would a Demon care about some ordinary Human girl?

Varek did not have an answer to that.

Demons were extremely selfish, especially Demons of Desire. Because they could charm almost any being, they did not believe in personal relationships.

And they definitely would not have a relationship with an ordinary Human girl. Even if they charmed her, used her body, and were physically attracted to her, they wouldn’t think for a second before abandoning her if they had to.

Varek did not care. He formed another blood needle, this time, he curved it around Lucian, as if to distract him.

Then, another needle moved through the debris, hiding between broken stones as it targeted Naomi again.

Again.

Barriers formed.

Lucian protected himself and Naomi.

’Again.’

Varek noted in his head.

Lucian’s frown deepened. He could feel something was wrong, something was going terribly wrong.

Varek attacked again, this time, multiple blood weapons formed all over the corridor. Each moved, this time, they targeted Lucian.

Lucian began dodging them all. Those he could not avoid were stopped by barriers or debris. However, this time, there was a problem.

Lucian wasn’t completely focused on himself.

He was more focused on Naomi.

Because some of the attacks were being aimed at her.

Of course, Lucian protected her every single time, just that, because he was protecting her, many of Varek’s attacks moved past his defences and struck him.

His healing kicked in and none of the attacks were actually serious since he avoided the lethal ones at the last moment—

But it still happened.

The attacks that he could have avoided, the attacks he had avoided before, now hit him.

And Varek saw it.

He saw the wounds on Lucian’s body, wounds that were being healed very quickly and Varek—

He couldn’t believe it.

’He’s prioritising her over himself.’

He was choosing her over himself again and again and again. This entire rampage of blood weapons, not a single one managed to hit the girl, but seven hit Lucian.

Seven attacks he could have avoided if he wasn’t so adamant about protecting the girl.

"Oh..."

Varek smiled.

And the instant he saw that smile, Lucian’s expression darkened.

He could tell where this was going.

He saw Varek looking at him, then at Naomi, then back at him.

"You care about her."

The Vampire grinned.

Lucian did not say anything.

The Vampire’s smile widened.

"How curious."

More and more blood weapons formed in the air.

"Let’s try it again."

He announced.

Lucian’s violet eyes glowed strongly.

However, this time, Varek did not attack. He stopped and looked at Lucian instead.

"You really do care about her."

He could tell because at this point, Lucian could have overwhelmed him with his attacks instead. He had more energy, so that was obviously possible.

But the thing was...

If Lucian went on the complete offensive—

His defence would weaken.

And while that wouldn’t be a problem for him, the girl...

The girl wouldn’t survive.

Varek’s crimson eyes glowed as they stared at the almost endless amount of Demonic Energy around Lucian, his Human body, the anger in his eyes now that he had started targeting the girl.

"You are a Human."

He finally understood.

As shocking as it was—

"You really are a Human.

A Human with a Demon’s blood!"

Varek couldn’t believe the oddity in front of him. Any other time, he would have been shocked to see what he was seeing, but right now, when this was actually working in his favour—

He laughed out loud.

"All that Demonic Energy...

And underneath it all, you are still just a Human.

How very weak!"

He laughed again.

Lucian did not say anything.

Varek did not care.

He simply waved his hand and the barrage of weapons he had created instantly rushed forward, half towards Lucian, half towards the girl he was protecting.

And Lucian moved in response, defending himself and Naomi again.
