Liam’s car drove towards Fifth Avenue, where Apple’s most iconic store stood, a massive glass cube rising right out of the plaza. Liam had gone there to pick up phones countless times in his previous life. After marrying into the Silverschild family, he had become the head of their security, so whenever new phones came out, he often had to get them for the staff working under him.
I’ll get one for Clara and Megan too. I must overperform in every mission to get the most out of them.
There was already a mission from the system to get Megan a brand-new MacBook, so giving her a phone along with it might trigger some extra rewards. Speaking of rewards, Liam suddenly narrowed his eyes. He had already completed one of the side missions, yet the system still hadn’t responded with the reward.
[Updated]
[Side Mission Complete: You need a car.]
[Reward: $4 Gift Card]
[Explanation: System is greatly disappointed at your car purchase choice.]
-_-
What the hell?
Before Liam could complain any further, the familiar green panel flickered in front of his eyes, its letters rapidly changing into the familiar big red letters.
[AMPLIFYING THE REWARDS BY 10,000X...]
[NEW REWARD: $40,000 Apple Store Credit. (Item)]
[Explanation: Disappointment also multiplies. This voucher expires today.]
Damn it. Oh well, I guess many of my old acquaintances are getting phones.
Liam parked the car a little far away from the Apple Store since every parking spot nearby was already taken. Alexandra, who had waited for him to open the door for her the first few times, jumped down on her own this time and immediately held his hand tightly as they walked towards the store.
"Your hands are very soft." [Charisma: 30]
"So are yours." [Charisma: 123]
Alexandra smiled and slowly rubbed his large but surprisingly soft hand beneath her palm, almost playing with his fingers as they walked. Liam’s body had gone through a complete reset, so his skin was spotless and smooth, his palms almost like a newborn’s without any rough patches, scars, or marks left behind.
They entered through the glass cube and followed the spiral glass staircase down into the actual Apple Store hidden beneath Fifth Avenue. The place opened up into a wide underground floor, bright enough that it barely felt like they were below the street.
Rows of clean maple tables stretched across the gray stone floor, each covered with iPhones, iPads, and Macs for customers to freely try, while polished stainless-steel walls reflected the white lights running across the ceiling.
The store was packed despite its size, Apple employees in blue shirts moving between customers while people crowded around the newest devices. Everything looked simple, almost overly clean, with barely anything distracting from the products sitting perfectly spaced across the wooden tables.
Liam directly walked towards the sales counter, the place customers went after checking the display products on the tables and finally deciding which phone they wanted. Behind the long counter, employees moved between drawers and storage shelves, bringing out sealed boxes while customers pointed at colors, storage sizes, and different models.
"You won’t look at the display products? This is such a grand store."
Alexandra asked as she looked around the entire store, her eyes moving from the glass staircase to the long rows of wooden tables and glowing devices spread across them.
The whole place had mesmerized her the moment she stepped inside, while Liam only smiled. He was from the future, so he had already seen much grander Apple stores, newer devices, and even this company’s eventual decline from where it once stood.
"I won’t. I will buy everything there is and then check later."
Liam had to spend fucking forty grand in this store. Forty thousand. His eyes slowly moved across the whole store, and for the first time, the massive Apple Store somehow looked painfully small.
This wasn’t even 2026, when phones were pushing $2,000, or 2030, when some models cost nearly $4,000 each. Right now, even the most expensive phone was barely near a thousand dollars, while a completely maxed-out MacBook only cost a few thousand.
How the fuck am I supposed to spend forty grand here today?
"Sir, what can I help you with?"
An employee greeted Liam with a professional smile from behind the counter, already reaching for the device used to place orders.
"Yeah, I will need you to pack twenty iPhone 6s Plus for me. Highest storage, different colors are fine."
"I’m sorry, sir. Because the 6s Plus was only released recently and stock is still limited, we can only sell two units per customer today. If you need twenty, we can arrange a larger order, but you won’t be able to take all of them today. There’s no such restriction on MacBooks, iPads, or most of our other products."
Liam knew it. The phone had only been released about a month ago, and demand was still ridiculous, so walking into one Apple Store and emptying twenty of their newest 6s Plus models was never going to happen with just the two of them.
His eyes slowly shifted from the employee towards the rows of MacBooks around the store. He still had nearly forty thousand dollars of store credit that expired today, which suddenly made those computers look a lot more interesting.
"Alright, pack four iPhone 6s Plus, 128GB, highest model you have. And fifteen of your highest-spec MacBook Pros, the fifteen-inch Retina, 2.8 GHz i7, 16GB memory, 1TB storage, Radeon graphics. Max everything out."
Liam picked up the brochure lying on the counter and quickly scanned through the listed models, his eyes moving straight past the cheaper options until they stopped at the most expensive configuration on the page. He tapped the line with his finger and read through the specifications once.
"Liam, what the fuck are you going to do with fifteen MacBooks?"
Alexandra grabbed his hand the moment he finished placing the order. Today, she was genuinely beginning to feel like Liam was spending money intentionally just to give her the shock of her life. Even the employee behind the counter froze for a second after hearing fifteen fully loaded MacBooks being ordered as casually as someone ordering coffee.
System, give me the voucher.
"Well, I have this... so..."
Liam pretended to pull something out of his wallet, and a golden-colored voucher suddenly materialized between his fingers without anyone noticing where it had actually come from. The smooth golden paper caught the bright store lights as he casually placed it into Alexandra’s hand.
"This is a VIP voucher given to the... Liam James Carter... worth $40,000 and expires on 07/11/2015... that’s today?"
Alexandra read everything written across the golden page almost in one breath before staring at Liam dumbfounded. Even the employee leaned forward slightly after seeing the unusual voucher. It looked nothing like the normal Apple gift cards or certificates he dealt with every day.
"Yeah, so I have to use it today. Give it to him; he’ll run it through his machine and see if it works or not."
Alexandra instantly handed it to the employee, almost afraid she might somehow damage something this precious. The employee carefully took the golden voucher and passed the scanner over it.
A thin red light moved across the surface, but instead of simply reflecting back, the golden paper gave off a faint glow of its own as tiny patterns briefly appeared across it before disappearing just as fast.
*CLICK*
The register froze for half a second before the screen suddenly flashed green, [APPROVED: $40,000 STORE CREDIT] flashing across it. The employee’s eyes widened as he looked from the screen back towards the strange voucher still sitting perfectly clean in his hand.
"It... It worked?"
