Chapter 51: Another Powerful System Is in Close ProximityClara sat in the car with her cheeks puffed out, looking through the window. Although the car was beautiful, Clara was still the moon on this street, her beauty enough to eclipse everything around her.
As the day was sunny and gorgeous, they were driving with the windows down, letting the warm breeze into the car. Clara, with her 380 Charisma, looked almost like a goddess on Earth, her hair shifting gently in the breeze.
"It’s like this. I earned this skill. I can’t give it to you."
"But... you gave me this beauty... I’m getting prettier by the minute. I almost turned Megan into a lesbian."
"You did?"
Liam was shocked to hear such a thing. Clara, this girl, had no filter on her mouth at all. Seeing her nod happily, looking almost proud of herself, Liam couldn’t help laughing out loud.
"I didn’t give you that. It’s just that you leveled up too quickly and earned it yourself, so don’t give me the credit."
"I leveled up? Like in a game?"
"Yep."
Clara went silent upon hearing this. She wasn’t sure how to take it. Last night, Liam had somehow managed to increase her strength and beauty, and this morning, she had felt unusually active and healthy. She glanced down at herself, slowly opening and closing one hand as she thought about it.
"I feel like I’m becoming Superman. I mean, Supergirl or whatever. I’m so strong now, you can’t even imagine."
Clara said this with a smile on her face, then raised her arm and flexed her biceps for him. Although her arms still looked soft, full, and girly, the muscle firmed beneath her skin as she flexed, giving a small hint of the serious strength hidden inside them.
"I think I can guess."
Liam smiled and looked ahead, although he didn’t need to. He summoned his [Cosmic Darkness of the Destroyed Universe] cape, keeping it from visibly materializing in front of Clara.
His body slowly lifted an inch off the seat, the leather cushion rising beneath him as his weight left it. With his hands still resting on the steering wheel, Liam casually floated in place while the car continued down the street.
"You can fly too? I’m jealous!"
"I’m jealous of your ability to level up this fast. You don’t even know how powerful you are right now."
Liam sat back down. He was currently six feet eight inches tall, and the car already felt a little cramped without him floating closer to the roof. Clara’s eyes sparkled as she looked at him, leaning slightly toward him in her seat.
"Can... you make me even prettier and stronger?"
"I can use the points you have to increase your stats... like last night. So what happened was, I increased your Charisma and Strength last night... but not enough to explain everything you’re feeling now. Most of that is because you leveled up seven times overnight, so you gained bonuses to your attributes with each level... What?"
Seeing Clara looking at him strangely, Liam finally stopped his explanation and turned toward her, raising an eyebrow at the expression on her face.
"You talk like we’re in a game... Wow, okay, I understand... So, is this common? Leveling up and all?"
"Leveling up is common... It’s probably tied to what you do every day, like your job. I’m purely guessing here because Megan is Level 2... But not everyone can use Divine Points like I can..."
"Oh? Like attribute points in a game that no one else can see, but you can?"
Clara raised both hands, spreading her fingers beside her face as she leaned toward him. Her eyes widened dramatically, and she lowered her voice toward the end, as if she had just uncovered some huge conspiracy. But Liam simply nodded, looking completely serious. Her hands slowly dropped into her lap, and she shut her mouth, settling back into her seat quietly.
"Sigh!"
Seeing Clara sigh in resignation, Liam smiled. If he hadn’t seen the system himself, he might have reacted just like her. The car continued down the street, sunlight passing over her face, but nothing outside seemed interesting enough to make Clara look up anymore. She sat quietly with her hands in her lap, still trying to make sense of everything he had told her.
Liam parked the car in an open curbside space near the Chase branch on Nassau Street, smoothly fitting the big Bentley between two parked cars. The bank’s blue Chase sign caught his eye as he switched off the engine, its entrance facing the busy sidewalk.
People walked past with coffee cups and shopping bags, a few turning to glance at the white SUV while Clara unfastened her seat belt. Liam had already rolled up the tinted windows, so they couldn’t see her inside. Otherwise, they would have been staring at her instead of the car.
Liam got out first and opened the door for her. Clara looked him in the eyes and gave him a small smile, as if she were doing it just to make him happy, then took his hand and held it tightly as she stepped out.
Liam smiled back and led her toward the bank’s entrance. Once inside, he walked past the reception desk and went directly to the elevator. Clara didn’t ask any questions; she just stayed beside him, holding his hand and following his lead.
"Sir, where are you headed?"
As he stepped onto the fifth floor, where only executive-level officers had their offices, a security guard stopped them in their tracks. Liam looked around and noticed several security personnel dressed in black stationed along the corridor. None of them had been there during his last visit, and his eyes narrowed slightly as he turned back to the guard.
"Tell Vice President Daniel that Liam Carter is here."
"The vice president? He’s in a meeting right now. You’ll have to wait downstairs."
"Liam, let’s go back..."
Clara nudged Liam’s arm and tightened her grip on his hand. The whole floor reeked of money and power, from the polished floor beneath her shoes to the quiet offices behind the glass walls. Just standing there made her uncomfortable.
The Chinese security guard barely acknowledged her, his eyes moving straight past her face before slowly examining Liam’s plain T-shirt, jeans, and shoes. He paused at the shoes, then looked up with an expression that made Clara wish Liam had worn his suit.
The guard was handsome, with neatly styled black hair, a sharp jaw, and broad shoulders beneath his fitted black suit. But when his gaze returned to Clara, it lingered this time, traveling down her white dress, stopping on her chest for a few seconds before slowly coming back to her face.
His mouth curved into a faint smile, completely different from the look he had given Liam. Clara edged closer to Liam, but the guard’s eyes followed her movement, lingering until she turned her shoulder toward him.
The guard pressed the elevator’s down button without waiting for an answer, then held his hand toward the doors, expecting them to leave. A man seated nearby glanced up from his phone, watched them for a moment, and went back to scrolling.
Clara’s cheeks warmed. She had dressed carefully that morning, but now she found herself smoothing the side of her dress for no reason, feeling like they had wandered into a place where they needed permission just to stand.
