Chapter 405 - 228: Running Away Is Shameful...

It was an explosion, not a blaze.

An exceptionally brilliant counter. He compressed the Dragon Flame before releasing it, using the resulting blast wave to disrupt the incoming Scale Arrows. Though many still shot toward Baron, he could dodge most of them with his footwork.

Even the High Priest marveled internally at the cleverness of this countermeasure. Back when he was a Contract Knight in the Griffin Knight Order, the Knight Commander had told him that using air currents to interfere with a Griffin’s feathers was an effective tactic.

Immediately after, the flash of steel and the Sharp Claws collided violently, creating an impact like a falling meteor.

At that very moment, a sound like rushing wind came from the High Priest’s throat. It was a mocking laugh.

At the critical moment, he spun, his attack shifting. His Sharp Claws grabbed the blade of the Spear Sword as he twisted his feet, pulling the weapon aside to reveal his follow-up attack: the "Tail Needle."

His dragon tail, as sharp as a blade.

Baron’s only remaining option was to swing his Dragon Spear. But even if he dodged the dragon tail, the sky was still filled with a swarm of Scale Arrows. At this range, creating distance was impossible.

No wonder the High Priest was so confident. This was a multiple-choice question where every answer was death; the only choice left was how he wanted to die.

This was a checkmate!

And clearly, Baron had realized it was a checkmate, too. Facing the dragon tail and the sky full of Scale Arrows, he instead let go of the Spear Sword, raising the Dragon Spear to block the tail... but he didn’t block it!

The instant before the dragon tail made contact with the Dragon Spear, it bizarrely changed its attack, twisting like a snake to strike the Dragon Knight from behind!

It was a trap!!!

A mocking smile spread across the High Priest’s demonic, bulging face. As a former Contract Knight of the Griffin Knight Order, he was well-versed in all forms of combat. How could a Bloodless like Constantine, who had never received any professional battle training, possibly compare?

’Just a simple feint, and the Dragon Knight fell for it. Good. Now, take your sins with you to Hell!’

The moment this thought flashed through the High Priest’s mind, his smile froze.

Because his flanking dragon tail hadn’t caught up to the Dragon Knight. The reason it couldn’t catch up... was because the Dragon Knight had abandoned all defense and charged straight at the High Priest!!!

In that instant, the man had chosen to ignore the dragon tail at his back and the falling Scale Arrows, opting instead to attack!

This madman!!!

’Is he trying to trade his life for mine!!!’

But it was too late to dodge. The Dragon Spear was already at the High Priest’s chest. He could only watch as the weapon, which seemed forged from Gold and was covered in strange patterns, pierced his torso.

Pain and terror radiated from the wound, flooding every nerve in his body like a tide.

Then, Baron actually lifted the High Priest into the air with the Dragon Spear! Ignoring the man’s Sharp Claws as they cut deep gashes into his back like knives through flesh, he copied the High Priest’s earlier tactic, using him as a Shield to block the Scale Arrows!!!

The High Priest fell. The Dragon Spear had run him through completely, and the Dragon Flame had instantly incinerated his internal organs. The Scale Armor that had originated from him now returned to his body—though the method was somewhat unexpected and less than ideal.

He twitched for a moment, then collapsed.

Even so, his dragon tail had also... come just shy of piercing Baron’s chest.

The surrounding Cultists froze, their attacks ceasing. They stared dumbly at this man who was bathed in both blood and fire, like an Angel, looking at each other in stunned silence.

"..."

A crackle of static suddenly sounded in his ear. It was Jack, trying to call him on the radio. The interference from the Alchemy Array prevented any words from getting through, but the two had agreed on a contingency: if the radio made a sound, it meant Jack was safe.

Baron let out a sigh of relief. ’Good. At least I won’t have any other burdens to worry about now.’

The reason he hadn’t left wasn’t just because of Jack; Baron had also wanted to take this opportunity to test his own combat capabilities.

This way, he could gauge his limits and know when to bail in future battles.

Now that the radio was working again, it meant that fellow Jack had successfully escaped the Monastery. All that was left for him to do was leave, too.

Baron poured his Spiritual Power into the [Illusory Cocoon], but nothing happened—he didn’t have enough Spiritual Power left to activate it.

’Honestly, that’s a bit of a surprise.’

To ensure he had enough Spiritual Power left to pour into the [Illusory Cocoon] for his escape, Baron had deliberately refrained from using the Little Flame Demon to create an Instant Burst among the Dragon Devourer Cultists. He hadn’t expected to use so much Dragon Flame that he’d lose track of his power consumption and be unable to activate his Escape Divine Artifact. ’I was careless.’

And now, even with the High Priest dead, countless enemies still surrounded him outside the ring of fire, staring him down. It seemed they were too intimidated by Baron’s earlier show of force to advance, but Baron knew perfectly well that the moment they realized his Spiritual Power was spent, they would swarm him.

An idea flashed through his mind. He retracted the Dragon Spear, flicked his Spear Sword, and cut off the High Priest’s head. Holding it in his hand, he began to walk forward slowly.

A strange scene unfolded. For every step he took forward, the Cultists encircling him took a step back. Even when Baron stepped through the wall of fire, the dynamic remained: he advanced, the enemy retreated.

It seemed the earlier battle between Baron and the High Priest had left too deep an impression, creating the current standoff.

Before long, he was out of the alley and had reached a spot that he and Jack had previously identified as a good place for an escape.

Just as he was about to leave, another group of people cut through the crowd from the other side like a sharp sword.

The newcomers were all in uniform, wearing either Silver Faction or Beast Faction emblems on their chests. The only difference was the color of the emblems—black or teal—which represented the Demon Hunters’ respective Tiers.

It was the Bertelili Demon Hunter Association.

They controlled the situation the moment they arrived. Their method of "control," that is, was to surround Baron.

...

「The Hestia Family, British Museum.」

Elder Pence gazed at Roy, who was floating in the Blood Pool beside the enormous corpse of a Third Generation Electric Dragon from the Thunder Dragon Faction. He spoke coolly.

"You’re saying Baron Constantin appeared at the Dragon Eater Association gathering in Berthelili?"

The Attendant lowered his head and relayed all the information he had received to the Elder.

After listening, Elder Pence said coldly, "Before Lancelot’s Family learns of this, we must capture Freya as soon as possible... The ritual needs her. I can barely suppress Anthony’s soul anymore, but whether it’s Fla or Freya, as long as we have the spirit of one of them for the sacrifice, Anthony’s soul will surely stop resisting."

"As for Baron Constantin, send word to the London Tower Wizards and the Lion Eye Knight Order stationed at Traitor’s Cliff."

"Promise the London Tower Gold. Lancelot’s Family doesn’t have the authority to command the Lion Eye Knight Order at Traitor’s Cliff, but if they hear that Freya was killed by Constantine, they will surely send people... Is this overkill? I saw his performance at the Beowulf Family’s estate. Without a Silver Tier Demon Hunter, or one close to it, the Berthelili association won’t be able to do a thing to that man."

After the Attendant received his orders and left, Elder Pence turned to look at Roy, who was merging with the dragon corpse in the Blood Pool, and whispered:

"Everything is ready... As long as we can achieve immortality, all the years of effort by the Hestia Family will have been worth it."

...

"Lawbreaker Baron Constantin!"

The captain of the Bertelili Demon Hunter Association team roared, his voice like rolling thunder, "You attacked the Monastery, kidnapped Miss Lancelot, and murdered countless people! Your crimes are punishable by death! Today, I shall execute you in the name of Law and Order!"

’And here I was thinking you were going to punish me in the name of the moon.’

Baron smirked, casually tossed an Alchemy Bomb, and as chaos erupted behind him, he turned and ran!!!

’I didn’t expect this to turn into advanced escape training on top of combat practice. But hey, what can you do? Running away may be shameful, but it’s damn useful.’
