Why Are the Psychos Obsessed with a Mere NPC?
Chapter 166 - 165: The Considerate First WifeJian Yu was flustered, even more embarrassed than when Xi Yu had kissed her.
She closed her eyes for a moment. It still felt strange, so she quickly turned her back.
A hand wrapped around her waist. Jian Yu glanced down at it.
When she turned her head again, she saw a row of men standing beside them.
Ling Yanzhi smiled and put his arm around her waist. "Let’s step outside first."
Jian Yu nodded. In her peripheral vision, she noticed Xi Yu hadn’t moved an inch.
From the look in his eyes, he seemed to want to rush forward, yet he was held back by a sense of not belonging, or perhaps some internal conflict.
Si Xu and Pei Yin went out.
This made the three people left behind seem a bit conspicuous, as if they couldn’t read the room.
Jian Yu looked up at Ling Yanzhi, using her eyes to gesture for him to look at Xi Yu’s hand.
Xi Yu hadn’t let go of her hand since they came in.
Ling Yanzhi glanced over lazily, then raised his eyes.
He had been to the Xi Family’s home many times and knew how possessive Xi Mu was of Chu Qianqian.
Xi Yu only ever interacted with Chu Qianqian right under his father’s nose, or he would watch her secretly from the side.
Xi Mu often told his son, "When you find your own darling, you’ll understand why I have to keep mine all to myself."
Back then, Xi Yu had even told Ling Yanzhi that his father was seriously ill, forbidding him from seeing his mother and treating everyone else like a homewrecker.
Sometimes, a situation is so absurd it’s actually funny. The corners of Ling Yanzhi’s mouth lifted as he reached out to pull Xi Yu away.
"Uncle, we’ll wait for you outside."
The door closed automatically.
Chu Qianqian’s fingers tentatively explored her own legs, her expression shifting constantly.
It was unbelievable, but the proof was right in front of her.
She patted Xi Mu’s left shoulder, tears welling in her eyes. "Let’s go out. Don’t let the kids laugh at us."
The muscles in her calves had atrophied, so she still couldn’t get up and walk.
"Okay." Xi Mu suppressed his joy, sliding one arm directly under the crook of her knees and lifting her into a princess carry.
Chu Qianqian smiled and kissed his trembling lips. "The wheelchair."
"Hehehe, right, right, right."
...
Jian Yu sat outside, glancing at the door with a bit of curiosity.
’I wonder how effective the Healing was.’
When she saw them coming out, she quickly stood up.
Xi Mu wheeled her over. "No need to be nervous. We’re all family."
Jian Yu pressed her lips together, hesitating over how to start.
’I’m sure I drew out and removed all the black qi.’
’But I’m still a little worried. What if more problems suddenly appear now that Chu Qianqian has undergone my Healing?’
She looked at Pei Yin and Si Xu. "Do you two want to take another look? Or should I try Healing her again?"
Chu Qianqian sensed her anxiety. "I feel much better."
No one knew her own body better than she did.
A soft white light glowed at Si Xu’s fingertips.
He looked back at Jian Yu, his fingers curling slightly. "No toxins, no contamination."
Pei Yin scoffed. "What are you checking for, a Soul Ghost Body? ’No contamination’?"
He took out a portable instrument and bent down to examine her.
"The toxins are gone, but the muscle atrophy is severe. She’ll need physical therapy later on, but that will take time."
Pei Yin glanced at the wheelchair and handed over some medicine. "These Recovery Potions might be useful."
He didn’t have many attachments and usually just holed himself up in his research institute.
Before this, he hadn’t researched many medicines that ordinary people could take.
The Alliance’s funding was only granted to projects targeting Awakeners, and it was also relatively easier to make money off Awakeners than ordinary people.
Pei Yin subtly glanced at Jian Yu’s legs. He had originally prepared this medicine for her.
He hadn’t examined Jian Yu for a week. If things went as expected, she had probably already Awakened successfully.
Pei Yin looked away and added a reminder, "Don’t take it orally. Her body probably can’t handle it yet. I suggest trying to soak in a bath with it for half an hour first."
He had run countless simulations and even organized volunteers at Ling Yanzhi’s hospital for three phases of free clinical trials.
He was very confident in his medicine. "It’s almost ready to go to market. The side effects are minimal. It might cause some temporary dizziness, but that will go away after a good night’s sleep."
"I’ll have someone allocate you more funding later—a large sum," Xi Mu said without ceremony.
He had already invested a considerable amount in Pei Yin’s research on projects for ordinary people.
But it was too difficult to remove the potent effects from the medicine, so progress had been slow.
Ordinary people couldn’t withstand it, and few were willing to participate in the research.
Xi Mu remarked with a sigh, "I remember you joined the Alliance’s research department at just ten years old. To have achieved so much in only eight years... You have a bright future. I can tell you’re a gifted child."
"You’re too kind." Pei Yin pressed his lips into a smile, a rare hint of shyness appearing on his gorgeous face.
Jian Yu lowered her eyes and began to calculate silently in her head. ’Eight years... ten years old.’
She had already passed her nineteenth birthday.
And Pei Yin’s birthday was next spring.
That meant she was a few months older than Pei Yin.
"And my dear... Yu." Xi Mu started to say, but quickly corrected himself.
"From now on, regardless of whether you and my son stay together, you can tell me if there’s anything you want. Don’t hesitate to ask."
"I don’t have anything, really. Besides Qianqian, all I have is a bit too much money and a clan that’s a little bigger than others."
"The kids in the clan are all quite filial, too. They give me lots of nice things every month. I’ll pick some out and have my son deliver them to you from now on."
Xi Mu glanced at his son, who stood there like a statue pining for his wife.
He cleared his throat. "It’s not good to call her ’Baby’ in front of outsiders. Tone it down a bit in the future. You can call her that in private."
Xi Yu looked up, his eyes darting around, but he didn’t say a word.
Chu Qianqian looked a little sleepy and smiled gently.
Si Xu maintained his prim posture, though a flicker of jealousy occasionally escaped his eyes.
Only Pei Yin and Ling Yanzhi would chime in to agree with Xi Mu, adding a few words here and there.
Jian Yu’s face was stiff from smiling. The topics changed so quickly that she hadn’t even had a chance to respond to the last one before they were on to the next.
And she had no idea how to answer any of them.
Having come in a hurry, Jian Yu searched her Space Ring all over but couldn’t think of a gift to give in return.
It was her first time visiting, and she had come solely for the purpose of treating Chu Qianqian’s legs, completely unprepared.
Putting herself in the shoes of a girlfriend visiting her boyfriend’s family, she felt inexplicably vexed for showing up empty-handed.
’Xi Yu is my boyfriend. I won’t deny that.’
’Before the system comes to get me, I’m going to enjoy this world to the fullest, and that includes Xi Yu and the others.’
’Even if this is all just a dream.’
Jian Yu’s thoughts were a mess.
Suddenly, she heard Ling Yanzhi say a word to her: "Sachet."
’That’s right, the sachets.’
’The Xi Family wants for nothing, so any gift is about the sentiment.’
’But if I give them something they actually like and need, then I won’t feel so awkward about it, and it’ll be better for them, too.’
Jian Yu looked up, her wide eyes blinking in surprise.
Ling Yanzhi ruffled her hair and raised an eyebrow. "Just a guess."
After her Space Ring was shattered by Ling Chengfeng, Ling Yanzhi had somehow gotten another one for Jian Yu.
Right now, that Space Ring was on Jian Yu’s ring finger.
The pink mist could soothe an Awakener’s Threshold Devouring Period, but it also provoked carnal desire.
That’s why Jian Yu had infused the sachets with the blue smoke instead.
She took out the ten remaining sachets from her space, her expression reserved and her eyes anxious.
What Ling Yanzhi liked was the way Jian Yu’s eyes would widen slightly when her social anxiety kicked in, giving her entire being an air of endearing obedience.
He hadn’t really noticed Jian Yu’s face at first, because cuteness is a quality of one’s aura and personality, not just limited to physical appearance.
But he didn’t know that other people usually just called this being "as dull as a block of wood" and "tongue-tied," finding her depressing just to look at.
Ling Yanzhi’s eyelids lifted and he gestured with his hand. "Uncle, Yu has something she’d like to give you."
