Dan Biao and Zhang Li exchanged a look, but neither said a word. Li Yang was on the verge of erupting; any single word could set off a violent explosion. It’d be one thing if his cursing just went through the roof, but who knew what kind of torturous methods he’d come up with to make them wish they were dead.
But this gave Dan Biao a headache. He knew Xia Jie—she was one of the team’s most outstanding supervisors. She’d been transferred to manage NLB for just one day before being taken down. It was obvious Li Yang wouldn’t lower his standards for NLB because of this; in fact, he would only keep piling on the pressure. Who was going to shoulder this burden now? Who could possibly step up and handle it for him?
"Xiaodan, Xia Jie isn’t cutting it. I don’t know how you people select your staff. How can someone with no courage lead a team? We need a replacement now. Do you have any good candidates? This time, I want the absolute best supervisor from our operations department."
Dan Biao and Zhang Li exchanged a glance. The most outstanding supervisor, with both a great image and presence... wasn’t that Zhu Jing?
But transferring Zhu Jing wouldn’t be so simple. Yang Hui wasn’t as easy to deal with as the Shi Meng manager. Dan Biao could transfer people from other teams with a single word, but Zhu Jing was on Yang Hui’s team, and he wasn’t at all confident he could make it happen.
Besides, rumors were flying around the company that Yang Hui took Zhu Jing with him every day on his store inspections, conveniently mixing business with pleasure. Transferring her would mean breaking them up, and Dan Biao didn’t dare face Yang Hui’s wrath.
Zhang Li’s eyes darted around, as if he were hatching some wicked plan.
’Isn’t this the perfect chance to screw over Yang Hui? I’ll poach his best supervisor and create problems for his team. Plus, I hear he and Zhu Jing have a thing going on, right? All the more reason to transfer her. I’d love to see him lose his mind.’
The moment Dan Biao saw Zhang Li’s expression, he knew what that punk was thinking.
’Hmph, so you want to provoke Yang Hui? I’d love to see some drama myself. But I can’t be the one to suggest this, or I’ll be the one who gets burned. You’re Li Yang’s nephew—you bring it up. I’ll just sit back and watch the show.’
Sure enough, Zhang Li couldn’t hold it in. "Our company’s best supervisor is Zhu Jing. Her image and presence are a perfect fit. It’s just that—"
"Just what? Who taught you this bad habit of trailing off? Spit it out!"
Li Yang was an impatient man and hated it when people left their sentences hanging.
Zhang Li glanced at Dan Biao, as if to ask, ’Should I really say it?’
Dan Biao sneered inwardly. ’You’ve already whetted the boss’s appetite. Isn’t this all just to get him to approve Zhu Jing so you can screw over Yang Hui?’
So he jumped in and said, "Boss, Zhu Jing is on Yang Hui’s team. Airex has just stabilized; poaching his people right now probably isn’t a good idea."
Hearing this, Li Yang fell into thought. He had to admit, he was always cautious when it came to Yang Hui. The man was a thorn in his side who both infuriated him and made him a lot of money. People like that were the most frustrating to deal with.
Dan Biao’s explanation was his way of getting into Yang Hui’s good graces. If Li Yang ended up insisting on the transfer, at least Dan Biao had spoken up for him. That way, Yang Hui wouldn’t hold it against him.
"But right now, there’s probably no one else suitable besides Zhu Jing," Zhang Li chimed in. "And NLB is critical to the company, with such heavy targets for the second half of the year. When it comes to Yang Hui, I’m afraid you’ll have to be the one to apply the pressure, Boss."
After Zhang Li finished speaking, both Li Yang and Dan Biao turned to look at him.
Dan Biao laughed to himself. ’This fucking idiot Zhang Li thinks he’s digging a trap for Yang Hui, but he doesn’t realize he’s also putting Li Yang in a tough spot. This is going to end with either Li Yang exploding or Yang Hui seeing red. Didn’t he stop to think about which of those two he can actually afford to offend?’
Li Yang was indeed hesitant. He wasn’t confident he could get Yang Hui to comply; it wouldn’t be the first or second time the man had defied a direct order. But Zhang Li had a point. NLB was vital. The sales figures from Yanghe Commerce proved NLB had strong product appeal, and if managed well, it could generate massive profits. On the other hand, if it was managed poorly, not only would he lose the 3% rebate and promotional subsidies Serene had promised, but he would very likely lose the entire NLB market in Qingjiang Province. The profits Yang Hui generated were substantial, but they paled in comparison to what was at stake here.
Finally, he seemed to make his decision. He picked up the internal line. "Xiaocai, have Yang Hui come see me."
At that moment, Yang Hui was reviewing the store placement plans for NLB and Zen at Xinyue Square, which President Tian had sent over. According to the blueprints, the locations were all excellent. But being cautious, he still wanted to go inspect them in person. He had mentioned arranging a business trip with Shen Meng a couple of days ago. On the one hand, he was craving his girlfriend’s touch; on the other, he genuinely needed to check out the locations and store layouts on-site.
Just then, Zhu Jing quietly approached and suddenly appeared before him. Yang Hui’s head snapped up. "What are you doing, sneaking around like we’re having an affair?"
Startled, Zhu Jing quickly glanced around. Thankfully, no one else from the team was there. She was overthinking things; Yang Hui would never make a joke like that with other people around.
"Boss, the gossip is that President Li just blew up in his office," she said. "Xia Jie ran out in tears."
Having been at the company for a long time, Zhu Jing naturally had a network of people who liked to share gossip with her. Yang Hui, on the other hand, was the type to ignore all the office drama and focus on his own interests. No one ever approached him for idle chat.
Hmm? He couldn’t care less that Li Yang was angry. But why had Xia Jie run out crying? ’Was she reamed out over NLB’s performance? That can’t be right. She only took over yesterday. Even an Immortal descending from the heavens couldn’t reverse this decline so quickly. The whole situation with NLB is just a culmination of long-standing problems. This is an illness that has to be treated slowly and carefully—governing a large state is like cooking a small fish.’
’The only other option is to replace the entire staff, hire all new people, and train them from the ground up. But that’s not a quick fix either. The stores can’t just close in the meantime. And if you just bring in one new person, they’ll be assimilated by the old guard in a matter of days. As for having the company recruit an entirely new team to replace the current one all at once? Li Yang would never go for that.’
