Yang Hui let out a cold laugh and continued his tirade. "I generally treat people with courtesy.
"Unfortunately, I’ve recently come to understand a certain truth. Give a dog too much respect, and it starts thinking it’s a lion. I suggest you get a GPS for yourself so you can always be clear on your position. Don’t act like the general manager when you’re just an assistant!"
Holy shit!
The room fell so quiet you could hear a pin drop. ’This new Manager Yang is a real troublemaker, daring to lay into Cai Miao like that.’
Everyone here had suffered under Cai Miao for a long time. Seeing her red-faced and trembling with rage from Yang Hui’s tirade, they enjoyed the spectacle but couldn’t help feeling a bit sorry for Yang Hui.
’What a shame. A manager this handsome, one who can bring so much joy to the peanut gallery, probably won’t last long here.’
’He just offended the two people you absolutely can’t afford to cross in this company, and he did it at the same time during a major meeting. There’s no coming back from this.’
Furious, Cai Miao pointed at Yang Hui and demanded, "What kind of attitude is that?"
"I’m a manager, you’re an assistant. You’re speaking to me like this, and you’re asking about my attitude?"
The people below exchanged glances. ’Damn, he kind of has a point. An assistant’s rank isn’t high; her power comes from being President Li’s assistant.’
’It’s like the old saying: even a doorman at the prime minister’s mansion is an official in his own right. That was the real reason everyone feared her. It wasn’t Cai Miao herself, but her power to slander them in front of President Li.’
Cai Miao was left completely speechless. She couldn’t even argue that Yang Hui was wrong. ’To be humiliated in front of so many people! I’ve completely lost face!’
Just then, footsteps sounded from outside. Dan Biao said, "The boss might be here!"
The mention of "the boss" had an immediate effect on Cai Miao. She was like a eunuch in ancient times who would swagger around imperiously, but the moment he saw his master, he would call himself a slave and be ready to grovel and kiss his ass.
Cai Miao hurriedly stepped down from the platform. After being put in her place by Yang Hui in front of so many people, she felt everyone was laughing at her. ’I’ll get him back for this if it’s the last thing I do!’
Zhang Li also shot Yang Hui a cold smile, one that seemed to mock his audacity while simultaneously warning him, ’I’ll remember this. Let’s just wait and see.’
This was the first time Yang Hui had seen Li Yang at the company.
He wore a polo shirt and jeans and had a brisk walk.
He entered the conference room, scanned its occupants, and his eyes passed over Yang Hui without lingering for even a moment. He said to Dan Biao, "Let’s begin."
A young woman from the finance department brought over a stack of reports containing the operational data for May.
Dan Biao took them but didn’t look closely, as he had already seen the data up to May 30th. The last day wouldn’t change things much.
He began to drone on, reading off a series of corporate platitudes. It was the usual stuff: the economy was in a downturn, the market was difficult, but under President Li’s guidance, Futong Commerce had still managed to maintain its market position and operational scale. It was all thanks to President Li’s brilliant leadership—a whole lot of ass-kissing.
Yang Hui thought, ’If Li Yang hadn’t shown up, I bet he would’ve skipped this whole part.’
"Let’s first look at the profit figures for May. The other teams in our company are doing fine, contributing anywhere from hundreds of thousands to over a million in profit each month. However, the Airex team has always been under a lot of pressure. Of course, this isn’t Manager Yang’s fault; it’s a long-standing issue with the team."
Yang Hui’s reputation as a troublemaker was now firmly cemented in everyone’s minds. Dan Biao, perhaps afraid of being contradicted on the spot, tried to soften the blow when he mentioned the Airex team.
"The team with the worst profit performance this month is still Ai... Ai, huh?"
He was about to announce the profit data and glanced down at the report, intending to say "Airex," but the figures on the page made the word catch in his throat like a fishbone.
"Xiaodan, can’t you even speak properly?"
Li Yang remarked, a hint of displeasure in his voice.
Dan Biao’s face flushed, and he had no choice but to read from the report finance had provided. "The worst is the Erke team. Their profit for May was 20,000, barely breaking even."
An uproar erupted below. Zhang Li exclaimed in disbelief, "President Shan, you must have made a mistake! A team that lost money isn’t the worst, but my team, which turned a profit of 20,000, is?"
Li Yang quickly picked up the report in front of him, then gave Yang Hui a meaningful glance.
Dan Biao understood Zhang Li’s confusion. "According to the data provided by the finance department, all teams were profitable in May. I’d like to give special recognition to the Airex team, with a profit of 120,000. While the amount isn’t huge, the significance is. After losing money for several months in a row, they are finally in the black!"
Cai Miao interjected from the side, "Did the finance department make a mistake? Airex’s year-over-year growth and achievement rate both dropped this month. How could they possibly have made a profit?"
Dan Biao was at a loss for an explanation. In truth, he was thinking the same thing as Cai Miao—that finance had made a calculation error.
Only Li Yang didn’t question it, because he had the complete report in his hands.
"Continue."
Since Li Yang had spoken, Dan Biao continued. "Next, year-over-year growth. The lowest in May was Erke, with a same-store year-over-year growth of -5%!"
After that last exchange, he’d learned his lesson. He stuck to reading the data finance had given him, surprised to find that the worst performer was, once again, Erke.
Zhang Li objected again. "How is that possible? Yesterday, I saw Airex’s same-store year-over-year growth was at -12%! How did I become dead last in a single day? The finance data has to be wrong!"
Dan Biao checked the financial report again. "Airex’s same-store year-over-year growth for May was 5%. They achieved positive growth!"
The Airex team was suddenly the center of attention. ’How did they manage that? A complete turnaround in a single day?’
’If the finance department’s numbers weren’t wrong, then the Airex team must have resorted to some unconventional methods.’
"Impossible! How could that be possible?"
Zhang Li shot to his feet, loudly insisting the financial data had to be wrong. He was dead last in two consecutive key metrics. Before the meeting, he had been openly mocking Yang Hui; now, he was finding himself at the bottom of every list. How could he possibly stand it?
"What are you getting so worked up for? Sit down! This is a conference room, not your living room. Where are your manners?"
Li Yang’s sharp rebuke silenced Zhang Li, who immediately sat down, not daring to make another peep.
"Xiaocai, get me the daily performance reports for all Airex stores for the month of May."
Cai Miao was starting to question reality. She had to find out what was really going on. Otherwise, the taunts she’d directed at Yang Hui would end up being insults to Zhang Li, and she would have suffered Yang Hui’s verbal abuse for nothing.
’So in the end, it’s like I was mocking Zhang Li, and Yang Hui got to yell at me. How did I get such a raw deal?’
"Finally, let’s talk about target achievement rate. This one affects the bonuses for all supervisors and their stores. The worst performer this month is, again, the Erke team, with an achievement rate of 85%. Out of their seven supervisors, two failed to reach 80%."
"And deserving of praise is the Airex team. All of their supervisors reached the 80% threshold this month, with Supervisor Zhu Jing achieving 101% of her target."
As Dan Biao spoke, he kept glancing at Yang Hui. ’How did he do it? It’s unbelievable!’
Retail was a business of slow, steady progress. ’How on earth did he manage a complete turnaround in a single day?’
