Regardless of the reason, this was a good thing for Dan Biao, as it boosted his personal performance rate and, in turn, his bonus.

Just then, Cai Miao hurried in from outside. "Boss," he said as he walked, "I think there must be a problem with the data. A lot of Airex stores reported sales of over 20,000 yesterday. Two of them, which normally only do a hundred-some thousand a month, did 130,000 in a single day!"

Li Yang took the report and glanced at it. He wasn’t Cai Miao, however. ’How many fools actually make it to the top?’ The finance department might get one number wrong, but how could a dozen or so stores all make the same mistake?

He looked up at Yang Hui and asked with a smile, "A Hui, what’s the story with these numbers?"

’A Hui?’ The others found the nickname surprising. The boss usually just called President Shan "Xiaodan."

"Our team landed a group purchase order. We entered it all into the system yesterday."

The mystery was solved. Everyone suddenly understood. ’So that’s how they turned things around in a single day.’

Zhang Li sneered. "So that’s how you made a comeback. You just got shit-lucky!"

Li Yang slammed the report down on the table. "Can you cut the crap? What do you mean, ’lucky’? Luck is a part of skill. If you’ve got what it takes, then you go negotiate a group purchase. You can’t do it yourself, yet you’re making snide remarks about others. Do it again, and you can get the hell out. You won’t be working for me anymore."

’He’s doing this to put me in his debt,’ Yang Hui thought, ’probably for Zhang Chun’s sake. And by scolding his own nephew in the meeting, he gets to look impartial, like he treats everyone equally. But he’s the only one who knows what’s really going on.’

Zhang Li was genuinely afraid of Li Yang and didn’t dare say another word. But he chalked this one up against Yang Hui.

Next came the announcement of the June targets for each team, which the managers and supervisors duly noted. The rest of the meeting proceeded without incident.

After the meeting, Dan Biao called Yang Hui to his office.

"A Hui, you really gave me a pleasant surprise."

He was copying Li Yang by calling him A Hui. The name rolled off the tongue nicely. Dan Biao was quite satisfied with a subordinate who could deliver results like this.

"Just luck."

"Haha, no need to be so modest. I could use a lot more of this kind of luck.

I called you in because, as I mentioned the day before yesterday, I plan to bring you with me when I visit the leadership at the various shopping centers. I want to introduce you to some of my contacts and resources. I also want to have you help handle some of the issues Airex is currently facing, like store closures.

This afternoon, I have a meeting with the regional operations manager for Xinyue Square. You’ll come with me."

’The regional operations manager for Xinyue Square?’

’He knew her well. Cheng Jun. A very ripe woman, indeed.’

Back when he was at Ruijing Commerce, they had done business together. They had even had private dinners and gone for walks. If the opportunity had presented itself, they might have had a... more intimate exchange.

’Might as well see her. She’s an old acquaintance. Besides, I need to bring up Airex’s plan to do online sales through Xinyue Square. We’ll need her to coordinate with the various locations.’

Of course, Yang Hui wouldn’t rely on her alone. She was the regional operations manager, but her rank was lower than the general managers of the individual shopping centers. She didn’t have their executive power, so she couldn’t command the stores’ resources.

To get the stores to cooperate, he’d still need a word from President Tian.

And since President Tian was practically at his beck and call, handling this matter would be a breeze.

Dan Biao’s meeting with Cheng Jun was scheduled for 3:00 PM. That worked out perfectly, as Yang Hui was planning to use his lunch break to check out the office space and warehouse Yang Na had picked out.

"A Hui, you’re still a bit too headstrong. We work at this company to build a good career and make more money. There are some people you just shouldn’t offend if you can help it!"

Yang Hui knew he was talking about Cai Miao and Zhang Li. He just smiled without saying anything. ’My only worry is that I didn’t offend them enough,’ he thought. ’If I could, I’d even go after Li Yang. Cai Miao and Zhang Li are nobodies.’

Seeing his dismissive attitude, Dan Biao sighed. "You’re still young, not tactful enough. I hope you can settle down, focus on your work here, and make good money. You’ll have plenty of things to spend it on in the future.

You need to set some goals for yourself. When are you going to buy a house? When are you going to buy a car?

Take buying a house, for example. What kind of house? A 100-square-meter place in Qingzhou costs at least two million, wouldn’t you say? Even if your family can help with the down payment, you still have to be able to make the monthly mortgage payments, right?

Or take buying a car. What kind? A car is a reflection of a man’s status. Driving a 100,000-yuan car is completely different from driving one that costs several hundred thousand.

My point is, we’re out here to make money, not to make enemies. Don’t do anything that gets in the way of earning a paycheck!

Look at me. I’ve worked my tail off at this company for years. Now, I’ve bought a 120-square-meter house in Qingzhou and a Cadillac, and I’ve reached the position I’m in today. I believe if you’re willing to work hard, you can have all this too in less than ten years!"

Yang Hui fought back a laugh. ’Is President Shan trying to show off his house and his Cadillac?’

Perhaps he had a point. For a man approaching forty to have achieved a 120-square-meter house and a Cadillac in Qingzhou all on his own... he was already doing better than most people.

"Thank you, President Shan!"

’We just can’t see eye to eye.’ Dan Biao was thinking about how to secure his position, while Yang Hui was thinking about how to get the company to fire him sooner.

’You make money from your job. I make money by losing mine!’

’Our paths have already diverged. We’re not destined to walk the same road!’

After leaving Dan Biao’s office, Yang Hui returned to his desk, took care of a few things, and then headed out.

He had arranged to meet Yang Na at the office location she had picked out.

[Han Ya: Zhu Jing, your performance is so high. Did the boss give you some special treatment again?]

The moment he left, Han Ya turned to ask Zhu Jing.

Everyone had gotten a piece of the group purchase performance yesterday, so they all knew exactly why Zhu Jing’s numbers had suddenly shot up.

Zhu Jing couldn’t very well deny it, so she could only nod.

[Han Ya: My, my. Being pretty certainly pleases the boss. He just loves to get behind you and offer his support!]

Zhu Jing reached out and swatted at her. "You’re terrible! What kind of crazy things are you saying?"

Han Ya giggled as she dodged. "Am I wrong? I mean, how many times has the boss ’supported’ you in the last two days? You can’t even call it support. He’s behind you, *forcefully* supporting you!"

Zhu Jing’s face instantly flushed red. She herself had been wondering if Yang Hui was interested in her, because he really had been paying special attention to her.

Her heart pounded. She stared at her computer screen, but her mind was a complete blank. Han Ya’s words kept replaying in her head, the images they conjured becoming more and more vivid.

’Does he really want to... support me like that?’
