Wilderness: I Tame Beasts to Survive
Chapter 418 - 284: Stockpiling Grain (Part 2)Chapter 418: Chapter 284: Stockpiling Grain (Part 2)
"The first batch of Soul Beasts is carrying a total of about 10,000 Spirit Fruit Trees, with the Wood Type Soul Beasts carrying the largest share."
"That’s basically all the Spirit Fruit Trees. The second batch of Soul Beasts is mostly transporting fresh meat, Crystal Stones, and various daily supplies. The only thing I’m worried about now is whether we can plant so many Spirit Fruit Trees on the back of the Gray Demon Whale."
"We can’t plant that many, of course... Our plan is to... reduce the number by about two-thirds, leaving a third of them to plant," Han Ning said after some thought.
"One-third?" Qing Fan looked down, pondering for a few seconds before sighing. "I suppose that’s our only option. The larger Soul Beasts will be placed under a Sealing Technique. That will drastically reduce their food consumption. We just have to survive the voyage."
"Yeah, let’s go take a look," Han Ning suggested.
"Follow me. Let me tell you... getting the Soul Beasts to hand over their precious Spirit Fruit Trees in the first place took a tremendous amount of effort..." Qing Fan gave a wry smile, unable to resist venting to Han Ning.
After all, many Soul Beasts were extremely reluctant to hand over their very source of food to another species.
The resistance was immense, but thankfully, they managed it in the end.
The two of them directed their Soul Beast to descend, hovering several dozen meters above the marching column.
The Jade Aurora Dragon’s astonishing body stood like a guardian deity at the open fissure in the Wall of Nether Fire. Its entire body was wreathed in an aurora, which condensed into bright halos. These halos drifted down onto the Soul Beasts entering Night Nether City, forming a protective shield to prevent the radiation from harming the weaker creatures below.
RUSTLE... SQUEAK SQUEAK...
Below, small Soul Beasts of all shapes and sizes, directed by the Dragon Blood Beastmasters, formed loose columns in twos and threes. They carried one or several lush Spirit Fruit Trees, quickening their pace as they marched forward.
"Unload them all outside the residential district! I’ve already arranged for the Beast Masters from Night Nether City to come and take over!" Han Ning called out.
Just then, Teacher Fang, who was in charge of the handover, noticed the commotion and hurried over.
He was accompanied by several other people of varying ages and genders.
Han Ning recognized them; before they had transmigrated, they had all worked in agronomy. Compared to Teacher Fang, a biology professor, they were far more skilled in researching various agricultural crops.
Originally... Teacher Fang and this group were all part of the support staff living in the Jade Forest. But Dean Wu, with great foresight, had considered that transplanting the Spirit Fruit Trees would present many problems, like difficulties with acclimation. So, three months ago, he had dispatched Teacher Fang and the others to Night Nether City in advance to begin working on crop survival and adaptation.
They had all spent time in the Jade Forest and had met one another many times. Teacher Fang and his companions nodded to Qing Fan as a greeting, then got straight to the point.
"What’s the damage rate on the Spirit Fruit Trees? How many were lost?"
"Due to the influence of the intense Darkness in the Grudge Abyss, the damage rate is quite high, around 20%, but it’s still within an acceptable range." Qing Fan beckoned, and a Dragon Blood-man who specialized in production ran forward from behind him to answer Teacher Fang’s question.
"And you? Have you run into any obstacles in your research on transplanting the Spirit Fruit Trees?" The Dragon Blood Beastmaster, who evidently knew Teacher Fang, asked with a smile.
At this, Teacher Fang gave a wry smile.
"The modifications to the Gray Demon Whale will likely take over a month more. During this period, the Spirit Fruit Trees and Spirit Fruits will have to remain in a high-radiation environment. Three months was too short... I can only try to keep as many of them alive as possible."
"To be honest, we’re already prepared to lose more than two-thirds... These Spirit Fruit Trees have never left the Jade Forest, never left the embrace of Lord Akatos. Putting them in such a harsh environment now... I’m not holding out much hope," the Dragon Blood Beastmaster said, shaking his head.
The two sides were chatting animatedly. Not wanting to disturb them, Han Ning said:
"Well then... Teacher Fang, we’ll leave the handover to you. Qing Fan and I are going to head out and ensure the safety of the next column moving into Night Nether City."
"Alright, go on."
...
By the time the two of them returned to the fissure, Dean Wu and a group of support staff were just passing through to the other side.
It was clear that the Dragon Blood People were providing top-tier protection for Dean Wu and his group. They had specially dispatched several Soul Beasts to ensure their safety, each exuding a formidable aura and possessing strength at least equivalent to a Middle Lord.
Da Yan, now twenty meters tall, carried a pile of supplies on its back that resembled a small hill. The most interesting part was a contraption that looked like a small lounge, secured to the front of the supply mound.
Through the lounge’s window, Teacher Lü could be clearly seen sitting on a cot inside, observing the world outside with a curious expression.
In addition, a middle-aged man with black hair was seated atop Da Yan’s creased head.
"Dean Wu, Teacher Lü, Teacher Liang... Da Yan, Shadow Mantis! Long time no see!"
"Han Ning?!" Upon seeing Han Ning flying toward them, Dean Wu and his nearby companions broke into delighted smiles.
Han Ning was just as happy to see his teachers, classmates, and companions. He waved to everyone in greeting, then leaped gracefully from Egg Pancake’s back onto Da Yan’s head. Stroking Da Yan’s wrinkled pate, he greeted Dean Wu with a smile.
"Dean, it must have been half a year. You look even younger! And... Teacher Lü, you’re finally awake!"
"Groooan..."
The words had barely left his mouth when an aggrieved grumble sounded from beneath him.
"Oh, oh, and Da Yan. You’ve worked hard," Han Ning said with a laugh, taking out a high-quality Earth Element Crystal Stone and tossing it into Da Yan’s mouth.
"Rumble~" Da Yan chewed on the delicious Crystal Stone, its eyes happily narrowing into slits.
"It has been a while. I heard you’ve been making quite a stir in Night Nether City. I’ve been wanting to come and see for myself," Dean Wu replied with a smile of his own.
As they spoke, the door to the lounge behind them slowly swung open.
Lü Xiuning, bundled up in a thick padded coat, stepped out unsteadily.
With his quick reflexes, Han Ning hurried over to support him.
"Teacher Lü, you’re awake."
"Thanks to you, I woke up two months ago. I’ve been recuperating this whole time. The environment in the Jade Forest is wonderful; I’m recovering very quickly."
Lü Xiuning’s cheeks were still a bit pale, and his neat, short hair was now streaked with gray. Though he was a good ten years younger than Dean Wu, he looked even older.
An injury like a shattered Spiritual World is incredibly difficult to heal. Even after more than half a year, Teacher Lü still hadn’t returned to his former condition; he couldn’t even form a contract with a Soul Beast for the time being.
’To see the once-spirited Teacher Lü, who had commanded the academy’s students in battle, now so frail he looked as though a gust of wind could blow him over...’ Han Ning felt a deep sense of sorrow.
"Don’t you look at me like that, kid. I’m already incredibly lucky to have made it out alive..." Having faced death once, Lü Xiuning had become quite philosophical about it, and his face held a constant, faint smile.
Just as they were speaking, Han Ning suddenly felt a strange fluctuation from within his Spiritual World.
He focused his mind and was startled to discover that the fluctuation was coming from the Subordinate Insect of his Puppet, Aketu.
In order to easily contact Qing Dou, he had specifically left Aketu by his side so that he could be notified immediately if anything unexpected occurred.
Now, Aketu was sending a message... He hurriedly responded.
’What is it?’
’Master, Lord Qing Dou has something he needs me to relay to you... Just a moment ago, on the surface of the Insect Continent, another section, about one-fifth of the landmass, vanished into thin air. The location this time is very close to the Grudge Abyss, roughly northwest of the Red Centipede Tribe’s territory. And... the Insect Masters of the Five Ancestor Families have all returned to their ancestral lands. It seems they’re gathered together to discuss something of great importance.’
