An hour passed, then another. At this point, Selene was starting to get impatient. Although she was indeed a Level 50 evolver now, the forest was too dangerous. She couldn’t risk staying here for too long.

Also, she wanted to go back to the battlefield to collect their spoils. She couldn’t just leave them behind.

’Unfortunately, this guy will not wake up anytime soon.’

Her lips kept twitching as she glanced at Leon. This was the first time she felt agitated because of a man. After all, Reymond wasn’t the type to worry her.

Taking a deep breath, she cooled her thoughts and decided on what to do.

’I have to retrieve the rewards. The others at the camp might also be affected by it. We can’t delay here.’

She had never given much thought to how people carried unconscious individuals. Now, with Leon’s arms hanging around her neck and his head resting against her shoulder, she suddenly realized how awkward it was.

She felt strangely uncomfortable with his body pressed against hers. However, she quickly suppressed the feeling.

She couldn’t leave him behind to go get the rewards. What if a mutated beast found him? In this weakened state, he’d just be uncooked meat.

So, she gave him a piggyback ride back to their battlefield. The place was completely open, with no trees in sight. The explosion had cleared everything.

Selene was stunned when she saw the corpse of the wyvern. Half of it was gone from the explosion, leaving the other half intact.

She carefully walked over, then scanned for the remains of the mutated gorilla. There was barely any remains. She only saw its large club on the ground and several large fragment of bone.

Soon, her gaze fell on the two treasure cubes lying among the broken bones, and she hurried to pick them up.

Still, she restrained herself and didn’t break them. Even though she had contributed to its death, she had only played a minor role. Leon was the one who had earned these cubes.

’Besides, he isn’t the stingy type anyway. Let him wake up first.’

Still carrying him, she walked over to the corpse of the wyvern and searched around it.

Soon, her eyes lit up as she saw a single ability scroll lying on the ground. She picked it up, then checked the information.

[Trait: Cellular Memory - The user’s cells instinctively record and analyze external stimuli, injuries, and harmful influences that affect the body]

’Cellular Memory...’

The name sounded unimpressive, but the description was strange. She couldn’t understand how simply recording injuries could be useful.

’Leon will probably know what to do with it.’

After keeping the three rewards, she went for the soul crystals next. One Tier One crystal, one Tier Two crystal.

Now, the only things left were the corpse remains and the strange metallic club on the ground.

Selene couldn’t take any of them with her, so she turned around and left. Later, they could come back. For now, she needed some serious rest.

To say she was tired was an understatement.

Still piggybacking Leon, she began to make her way back to the camp.

......

Meanwhile, the camp was finally breathing a sigh of relief as most of the mutated beasts had fled. Those that stubbornly stayed were being ganged up on and killed mercilessly.

In less than thirty minutes, all the remaining beasts had been slaughtered, and the ground was littered with corpses.

In this battle, the humans suffered heavy losses too, with ninety-eight evolvers dead. The mood among the militia was grim, but none of them broke down.

They weren’t novices, and the apocalypse had sharpened them.

Nicolas’s gaze swept over the battlefield, then he sighed.

"Everyone should retreat and get some rest." He turned to one of the men beside him. "Find some survivors willing to work for extra food. We’re harvesting these corpses."

They immediately got into motion, with many survivors coming out to help. Many of them had been terrified by the sounds of the battle, and when it finally ended, they were relieved.

When Nicolas’s words reached them, they immediately volunteered. Who wouldn’t want extra food? Besides, they might be able to get some of that nutritious meat too.

Even though it was in the middle of the night, none of them were intimidated. They immediately got to work, loading the trucks with beast corpses and sending them into the camp.

When Selene arrived, they were still working.

Seeing the aftermath, she immediately understood what had happened, and her expression sharpened.

It didn’t take long before she found Nicolas, and the man immediately gave a full report.

As Selene listened, her expression darkened. Ammunition had dropped below half, almost a hundred evolvers dead.

The losses were staggering, but still worth it. At least the camp hadn’t been flattened.

"Where is Marie?" She asked, not seeing the auburn-haired woman around.

"She fainted just before the battle ended. I’ve already sent her back to the villa," He explained. "You can head there too, Miss Selene. We’ll handle the clean-up here."

He could see Leon being carried, and realized that they had probably just escaped a great battle too. Besides, the cause of that explosion was still a mystery to him.

Leon and Selene must have fought their way out of the forest too—or so he thought.

Selene nodded and immediately left the clean-up to him. Even if she knew his thoughts, she wouldn’t bother correcting him.

In a matter of minutes, she arrived at the villa and immediately met with the maids.

"Take him to his room."

Although she wanted to watch over him by herself, she couldn’t do that right away. The maids took Leon to his room while she went to check on Marie.

Just as she expected, the woman was also evolving, as her aura was skyrocketing sharply. Pleased, Selene left the room and returned to her own room.

First, she changed out of her battle attire and took a hot shower. Unsurprisingly, she spent almost an hour there, relaxing. In the end, she managed to shake off the laziness and got dressed.

When she returned to Leon’s room, she found the two actresses—now maids—standing beside his bed and staring at him like he was a prized treasure.

They had managed to take off his armor and replace it with comfortable nightwear, and from the looks of it, they had even showered him.

’That much VIP treatment?’

Selene regarded the two women with narrowed eyes, then dismissed them. If Leon was merely unconscious, she’d have left them with him. Not this time.

He had protected her when she was unconscious. Now that he was the one vulnerable, it was only right that she returned the favor.

Although reluctant, the two maids left while casting envious gazes at her. Selene remained confused, oblivious to why they seemed reluctant.

In the end, she ignored them and took a seat beside the bed.

Hours ticked by as she struggled not to fall asleep. It was torturous, but she persisted till the sun brightened up the skies.

Then, Selene felt the change in the air. At that exact moment, Leon’s eyes snapped open.
